  • An Overview of the Ultrawide Bandgap Ga2O3 Semiconductor-Based Schottky Barrier Diode for Power Electronics Application

    摘要: Gallium oxide (Ga2O3) is a new semiconductor material which has the advantage of ultrawide bandgap, high breakdown electric field, and large Baliga’s figure of merit (BFOM), so it is a promising candidate for the next-generation high-power devices including Schottky barrier diode (SBD). In this paper, the basic physical properties of Ga2O3 semiconductor have been analyzed. And the recent investigations on the Ga2O3-based SBD have been reviewed. Meanwhile, various methods for improving the performances including breakdown voltage and on-resistance have been summarized and compared. Finally, the prospect of Ga2O3-based SBD for power electronics application has been analyzed.

  • Biosensor for point-of-care analysis of immunoglobulins in urine by metal enhanced fluorescence from gold nanoparticles

    摘要: Biosensors are easy-to-use and cost-effective devices that are emerging as an attracting tool not only in settling diagnosis or in disease monitoring, but also in mass screening tests, a timely topic that impacts on daily life of the whole society. Nanotechnologies lend themselves to the development of highly sensitive device whose realization has become a very interdisciplinary topic. Relying on the enhancement of the fluorescence signal detected at the surface of patterned gold nanoparticles, we report the behavior of an analytical device in detecting immunoglobulins in real urine samples that shows a limit of detection of approximately 8 μg/L and a linear range of 10-100 μg/L well below the detection limit of nephelometric method, which is the reference method for this analysis. These performances have been reached thanks to an effective surface functionalization technique and can be improved even more if superhydrophobic features of the substrate we produce will be exploited. Since the analyte recognition is realized by antibodies the specificity is very high and, in fact, no interference has been detected by other compounds also present in the real urine samples. The device has been assessed on serum samples by comparing IgG concentrations values obtained by the biosensor with those provided by a nephelometer. In this step we found that our approach allows the analysis of the whole blood without any pretreatment; moreover, it is inherently extendable to the analysis of most biochemical markers in biological fluids.

  • Recent Trends in Compressive Raman Spectroscopy Using DMD-Based Binary Detection

    摘要: The collection of high-dimensional hyperspectral data is often the slowest step in the process of hyperspectral Raman imaging. With the conventional array-based Raman spectroscopy acquiring of chemical images could take hours to even days. To increase the Raman collection speeds, a number of compressive detection (CD) strategies, which simultaneously sense and compress the spectral signal, have recently been demonstrated. As opposed to conventional hyperspectral imaging, where full spectra are measured prior to post-processing and imaging CD increases the speed of data collection by making measurements in a low-dimensional space containing only the information of interest, thus enabling real-time imaging. The use of single channel detectors gives the key advantage to CD strategy using optical filter functions to obtain component intensities. In other words, the filter functions are simply the optimized patterns of wavelength combinations characteristic of component in the sample, and the intensity transmitted through each filter represents a direct measure of the associated score values. Essentially, compressive hyperspectral images consist of 'score' pixels (instead of 'spectral' pixels). This paper presents an overview of recent advances in compressive Raman detection designs and performance validations using a DMD based binary detection strategy.

  • Reducing radiation exposure in an electrophysiology lab with introduction of newer fluoroscopic technology

    摘要: The use of fluoroscopic devices exposes patients and operators to harmful effects of ionizing radiation in an electrophysiology (EP) lab. We sought to know if the newer fluoroscopic technology (Allura Clarity) installed in a hybrid EP helps to reduce prescribed radiation dose. We performed radiation dose analysis of 90 patients who underwent various procedures in the EP lab at a community teaching hospital after the introduction of newer fluoroscopic technology in June of 2016. Watchman device insertion, radiofrequency ablation procedures, pacemaker permanent (PPM)/implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) placement and battery changes were included in the study to compare radiation exposure during different procedures performed commonly in an EP lab. In all cases of watchman device placement, radiofrequency ablation procedures, PPM/ICD placement and battery changes, there was a statistically significant difference (<0.05) in radiation dose exposure. Significant reduction in radiation exposure during various procedures performed in an EP lab was achieved with aid of newer fluoroscopic technology and better image detection technology.

  • Highly Stretchable Carbon Nanotube Fibers with Tunable and Stable Light Emission

    摘要: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess intriguing photoluminescence properties, and CNT fibers emit strong incandescent light thus act as macroscopic light sources. So far, straight-shaped CNT fibers are a focus of study and their emission properties are elucidated. Here, the authors show that helical-shaped single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) fibers produce uniform and stable incandescent light along the entire fiber under moderate voltages, and the emission intensity is tailored over a wide range by the applied voltage and the elongation of the fiber (up to 70% strain), and in a reversible way during mechanical deformation. Their highly stretchable SWNT fibers with tunable light emission have promising applications in emerging research areas such as wearable electronics and high-performance optoelectronic fiber systems.

  • Polarization-based plug-and-play measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution

    摘要: Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) has received much attention, with the goal of overcoming all of the security loopholes caused by an imperfect detection system. We here propose a plug-and-play MDI-QKD (P&P MDI-QKD) scheme whereby an untrusted relay node, Charlie, owns a laser and sends photons to Alice and Bob. Alice (Bob) modulates the polarization of the incident photons and returns them to Charlie. Charlie uses a modified Bell state analyzer (BSA) to perform Bell state measurements (BSM). In comparison with the original version of MDI-QKD, our scheme exploits a single untrusted laser as the photon source. This makes the signal photons identical and enhances the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect. Second, because of the P&P structure, the setup can automatically eliminate the birefringence influence of the fibers, which makes the setup highly stable. Finally, our modified BSA can identify |Φ?+ and |Φ?? of four Bell states with polarization encoding but not |Ψ?+ and |Ψ??. Based on practical experimental parameters, a simulation showed that the maximum theoretical secure transmission distance could reach more 280 km.

  • A Light-activated Polymer Composite Enables On-demand Photocontrol of Biomimetic Swimming Towards Transportation at Liquid/Air Interface

    摘要: Swimmers at liquid/air interface have drawn enormous attention for their potential applications while conventional devices face problems such as dependence on fuel, difficulty in motion control and accompanying high temperature. Herein, we show one novel light-driven swimmer based on bimorph composite structure of photoresponsive liquid-crystalline polymer network and commercially available polyimide (Kapton) whose motion is highly controllable with photoirradiation. The bilayer-structured film shows quickly photoinduced bending towards the Kapton side on exposure to UV light and recovers immediately after removal of light. When placed on liquid surface, the swimmer propels itself continually though rhythmic beating the liquid like a dolphin moving forward with its tail fin. Besides, light-powered rotation of the swimmer is successfully achieved by simply changing the length-width ratio and the irradiation site, mimicking the function of a dolphin’s pectoral fin. Combining the together, on-demand forward movement and rotation motion directional control of the photo-driven swimmer can be readily obtained at room temperature, showing promising for miniaturized transportation.

  • A comparative study of superimposition techniques for enhancing the projector resolution: Simulations and experiments

    摘要: Among the techniques developed to enhance the resolution of a projector beyond its native resolution, a number of techniques use sequential superimposition of low resolution images with sub-pixel shift to produce a resulting high-resolution image on the wall. This work investigates different low-resolution subframe image generation techniques used for this purpose. Along with that, two new subframe generation techniques have been developed with the aim to prioritize darker and/or bright pixels in an image. We have also extended a Single-subframe iterative technique to Two-subframe iterative technique to evaluate its full potential. Detailed simulations, visual image quality analysis, image quality metric assessment and measurement results of the existing and the newly developed methods have been carried out. A comparative study of the techniques suggests that iterative sub-frame generation techniques give the best overall image quality, but their high computational cost could make them less practical.

  • Non-doped phosphorescent organic light-emitting devices with an exciplex forming planar structure for efficiency enhancement

    摘要: Organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) consisting of a non-doped phosphorescent dye that inserted in an exciplex forming planar structure have been fabricated, and the thickness of ultrathin phosphor layer is optimized to achieve high efficiency. The results showed that OLEDs based on the exciplex interface and a 0.5 nm thick phosphorescent dye have a power efficiency, a current efficiency, and an external quantum efficiency of 37.4 lm/W, 40.5 cd/A, and 14.3%, respectively, which are almost two-folds higher than those with non-exciplex interface devices. Meanwhile, the efficiency roll-off is significantly suppressed. These improved device performances are attributed to the elimination of triplet energy leakage from exciplexes to constituting molecules, efficient energy up conversion of triplet exciplexes and complete host-guest F?rster energy transfer. These results will provide an easily-fabricated and time-saving approach for high-performance OLEDs.

  • Enhanced piezoelectric response in nanoclay induced electrospun PVDF nanofibers for energy harvesting

    摘要: Templated nanofibers of poly(vinylidene fluoride) have been designed on top of two dimensional nanoclay platelets for energy harvesting application. Dimension of nanofiber has been varied using different nanoclay content prepared through optimized electrospinning. The alteration in structure (electroactive phase) and morphology has been worked out as a function of nanoclay concentration. Nearly 90% piezoelectric active phase has been stabilized in presence of minimum quantity of nanoclay. Hybrid nanofiber is found to be tougher (300%) and stiffer by design, which in turn suitable for device application. Unimorph using hybrid nanofiber exhibits power generation up to 100 ms against less than 50 ms tenure using pristine fiber. Device has been fabricated using various nanofibers and demonstrates very high output voltage (70 V) and power density (68m W.cm-2) from the device made of hybrid nanofiber. Various modes of body movements e.g. bending, twisting, walking, foot and finger tapping can generate considerable power using the hybrid device and are able to transform waste mechanical energy to useful electric power. Underlying mechanism of charge separation in template system has been revealed which explain the high conversion of energy using the hybrid device.
