  • Label-free protein quantitation by dielectric spectroscopy of dual-frequency liquid crystal

    摘要: A dual-frequency-liquid-crystal (DFLC)-based biosensor was developed and its frequency-dependent dielectric properties were exploited to detect and quantitate a protein standard, bovine serum albumin (BSA). By analyzing the dielectric spectra of DFLC in the presence of BSA at various concentrations, we found that the difference in dielectric permittivity between the high- and low-frequency regimes is correlated to BSA concentration, thereby permitting a DFLC-based protein quantitative method. The dielectric properties of DFLCs are fundamental in the design of liquid crystal displays and fast-switching devices. Results from this study demonstrate the extended potential of the frequency-revertible dielectric anisotropy of DFLC in biosensing and protein quantitation.

  • Microwave cavity perturbation of nitrogen doped nano-crystalline diamond films

    摘要: Non-contact and non-destructive electrical conductivity measurements of nitrogen doped nano-crystalline diamond films have been demonstrated using a microwave cavity perturbation system. The conductivity of the films was controlled by simply varying the CH4 gas concentration during microwave plasma assisted chemical vapour deposition, thereby promoting the formation of sp2 carbon at the grain boundaries. The presence of sp2 carbon is verified through Raman spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy, while scanning electron microscopy confirms an increasing surface area for sp2 to form. The microwave cavity perturbation results show that the measured cavity quality factor varies with CH4 concentration. The extraction of conductivity is achieved through a depolarisation model, which must be considered when the sample is smaller than the cavity and through both electric and magnetic field perturbations. The microwave measurements are comparable to contacting and damaging measurements when the film conductivity is greater than the substrate, thus demonstrating an invaluable method for determining conductivity without the need for depositing any electrodes on the film.

  • Dynamics of Molecules Physically Adsorbed onto Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: Similarities between Water and a Flexible Polymer

    摘要: Water at interfaces is considered present and important within almost all physical processes. Interfacial water shows nonbulk properties, however, its structure/organization and dynamics are on a still open debate. In parallel to that, the interfacial polymer in nanocomposites exhibits modi?ed structure and dynamics, the latter characteristic being widely considered responsible for the improved nanocomposite properties. One of the most suitable tools for studying dynamics of a variety of small molecules and macromolecules is broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS), mainly due to its high resolving power. BDS is employed here in combination with isothermal hydration and has proved quite illuminating in recording for the ?rst time striking similarities in the dynamics behavior between water molecules and ?exible polydimethylsiloxane macromolecules, when the latter molecules are individually adsorbed physically on the attractive surfaces of metal oxide nanoparticle. The qualitative similarities between water and polymer interfacial dynamics, for example, in their exhibiting time-scale and the elevation of the respective activation energy upon increasing of interfacial molecules fraction, lay most probably at the origins of the same main surface-adsorbed molecule interaction, i.e.. the hydrogen bonding. Whereas, the quantitative di?erences in molecular dynamics, e.g., slower, more energetically demanding, and cooperative interfacial dynamics for the polymer than for water, arise from the di?erent scale of the two molecular motions (<1 nm for water and ≥1 nm for the polymer) and/or from alternations in interfacial layer density.

  • Influence of uniaxial pressure on dielectric properties of (1- <i>x</i> )Na <sub/>0.5</sub> Bi <sub/>0.5</sub> TiO <sub/>3–</sub><i>x</i> SrTiO <sub/>3</sub> for <i>x</i> = 0.01, 0.04, and 0.1 ceramics

    摘要: The conventional solid-state sintering was applied to synthesized (1-x)Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3–xSrTiO3 (x = 0.01, 0.04, and 0.1) ceramics. Dielectric measurements of these ceramics were taken in the temperature range from 20 to 600 °C, in the frequency range from 1 kHz to 2 MHz and under uniaxial pressure ranging from 10 to 1100 bar. The study of the dielectric behaviour showed that the influence of uniaxial pressure on the investigated properties was considerable. The peaks ?m gradually decreased and shifted towards lower temperatures with an increase of uniaxial pressure for all samples. The first effect developed with an increase of the strontium ion concentration. Experimental results revealed most interesting properties of the material in the context of its potential applications.
