  • Monitoring FO-PMD and SO-PMD over Time with Respect to Environmental Conditions

    摘要: Environmental conditions affect the birefringence of an optical fibre which in turn leads to fluctuations in its Polarization mode dispersion (PMD). Fluctuations in PMD make compensation for it in optical fibres very complicated. In this paper, fluctuations of first-order polarization mode dispersion (FO-PMD), FO-PMD coefficients and second-order polarization mode dispersion (SO-PMD) are monitored over time and also with respect to the environmental conditions. Long term measurements of FO-PMD have been done before by Mudau (2008) using the Generalized Interferometry Technique (GINTY) only. However, in this current study the FO-PMD coefficients and SO-PMD fluctuations were also monitored in addition to making a comparison between the measurements obtained using the Single-ended Dispersion Analyzer (FTB-5700) and the GINTY. These measurements were made on a 14.8 km long deployed aerial optical fibre that links St. Albans to Rockland transmission stations in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The weather information was obtained from the Kestrel 4500 pocket weather tracker that was set up at St. Albans transmission station. So, for good PMD compensation, PMD should be monitored for a very long period of time or use an instrument that can accurately measure it even when the optical fibre is exposed to harsh environmental conditions.

  • Controllable synthesis of transparent dispersions of monodisperse anatase-TiO2 nanoparticles and nanorods

    摘要: Controllable synthesis of monodisperse nanocrystals is still a great challenge. In this study, the control strategy of alcohol medium was developed to conveniently synthesize monodisperse anatase-TiO2 nanocrystals with controllable size and shape by sol-gel method combined with solvothermal treatment. The effects of the amount of stearic acid and water, and molecular structure of alcohol on the size, the shape and the dispersity of TiO2 nanocrystals were explored. The optimum synthesis conditions were achieved. Monodisperse TiO2 nanoparticles and nanorods were obtained by using linear and branched alcohols, respectively. The size of nanoparticles decreased from 12 to 5 nm with increasing carbon number of linear alcohol. The aspect ratio of nanorods was adjusted from 1 to 5 by selecting alcohols with different locations of branched methyl group. The as-prepared monodisperse TiO2 nanocrystals could be readily dispersed in some commonly-used solvents to form transparent nanodispersions. Furthermore, a possible formation mechanism was also investigated.

  • Estimation of refractive index for biological tissue using micro-optical coherence tomography

    摘要: The refractive index of biological tissue is required for investigating the tissue’s optical properties. Efforts have been made to characterize refractive indices of biological tissues at a single wavelength, but it is more convenient to know the Cauchy’s coefficients, which provide refractive index over a wide range of wavelengths. We demonstrate a method to noninvasively provide the Cauchy’s dispersion coefficients of biological tissues using micro-optical coherence tomography. Using short-frequency Fourier transforms, the relative optical thickness of the sample in the wavelength range of the broadband source was obtained from interferograms. The coefficients of Cauchy’s equation were estimated based on the wavelength-dependent sample thickness. We validated the proposed method using distilled water and fresh rat cornea ex vivo, and the experimental results were consistent with the reference data.

  • Input-to-Output Instantaneous Polarization Characterization

    摘要: This paper proposes a method to represent and predict received signal instantaneous polarization states as a function of arbitrary transmit polarization states for time-dispersive channels. The model incorporates frequency-dependent characterizations to represent the polarization dispersion behavior of a received signal across its bandwidth in a multipath channel. The representation takes advantage of signal dispersion features typical of depolarized signals, and employs subbanded characterizations to achieve polarization representations exhibiting high degrees of polarization in each subband. Experiments are conducted that demonstrate the utility of the modeling approach to predict polarization dispersion responses for arbitrary transmit polarizations based on measurements from two orthogonal transmit polarizations.

  • Lack of correlation between C-V hysteresis and capacitance frequency dispersion in accumulation of metal gate/high- <i>k</i> /n-InGaAs metal-oxide-semiconductor stacks

    摘要: The correlation between capacitance-voltage hysteresis and accumulation capacitance frequency dispersion of metal gate/high-k/n-InGaAs metal-oxide-semiconductor stacks is experimentally assessed. Samples fabricated employing forming gas annealing (FGA) or substrate air exposure to obtain different densities of defects were thoroughly characterized and the results were compared with previous literature on the topic. Results indicate a lack of correlation between capacitance-voltage hysteresis and accumulation capacitance dispersion with frequency, suggesting that defects with remarkably different kinetics are involved in each phenomenon. This is assessed through the dependence of the capacitance-voltage hysteresis with DC bias and stress time, observing that permanent interface defect depassivation under bias has no effect on the hysteresis width after stress. Overall, capacitance-voltage hysteresis probes slow trapping mechanisms throughout the oxide and the bandgap, which are consistent with the negative charge trapping characteristic of the current-time curves for FGA samples at constant voltage stress. Instead, accumulation capacitance frequency dispersion probes defects with short trapping/detrapping characteristic times that can be linked to the stress induced leakage current of air exposed samples under constant DC stress. Experimental results indicate that each effect must be assessed separately due to the large difference in the kinetics of the probed defects.
