    摘要: The province of Banten on western end of Java is one of the provinces with most visible disparity in the area development, in the southern part, the terrain is mountainous with dry valleys, this condition led to being the poverty area. The Cahaya Kebudiluhuran or “Noble Light” Project aims to implement the ideals of intelligent and noble humanity through the use of technology for the benefit on the greater community. The main target community is the Menes village in Pandeglang Regency, among the poorest region in otherwise flourishing Java’s other regions. The first phase of Noble Light Project implementation consists of distributing and installation of forty battery-operated portable home lighting equipment for 40 houses, and one battery charging station located at the Village Office Hall. The Portable House Lighting Unit consists of a 12 V, 45 Ah battery, 1.5 W LED lights and regulator/ control panel capable of 67.5 hour life cycle. Laboratory test for the unit performance shows that for normal 11-hours night-time use from 6 PM to 5 AM the house unit can provide lighting for 5 to 6 days.

    摘要: This paper presents a network security laboratory project for teaching network traffic anomaly detection methods to electrical engineering students. The project design follows a research-oriented teaching principle, enabling students to make their own discoveries in real network traffic, using data captured from a large IP darkspace monitor operated at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Although darkspace traffic does not include bidirectional conversations (only attempts to initiate them), it contains traffic related to or actually perpetrating a variety of network attacks originating from millions of Internet addresses around the world. This breadth of coverage makes this darkspace data an excellent choice for a hands-on study of Internet attack detection techniques. In addition, darkspace data is less privacy-critical than other network traces, because it contains only unwanted network traffic and no legitimate communication. In the lab exercises presented, students learn about network security challenges, search for suspicious anomalies in network traffic, and gain experience in presenting and interpreting their own findings. They acquire not only security-specific technical skills but also general knowledge in statistical data analysis and data mining techniques. They are also encouraged to discover new phenomena in the data, which helps to ignite their general interest in science and engineering research. The Vienna University of Technology, Austria, first implemented this laboratory during the summer semester 2014, with a class of 41 students. With the help of the Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) at UCSD, all exercises and IP darkspace data are publicly available.

  • High-Temperature Thermoelectric Energy Conversion Devices Using Si-Ge Thick Films Prepared by Laser Sintering of Nano/Micro Particles

    摘要: Learning to program is a complex task, and the impact of different pedagogical approaches to teach this skill has been hard to measure. This study examined the performance data of seven cohorts of students (N = 1168) learning programming under three different pedagogical approaches. These pedagogical approaches varied either in the length of the introductory programming block of courses (two or three semesters) or in the programming tool used in the first semester (C language or the programming support tool Raptor). In addition, gender and initial course selection differences were investigated. Raw pass rates under the three pedagogical approaches were compared; they were also compared, controlling for initial ability levels, using a logistic regression. Results showed that a more extensive duration of the introductory block produced a higher pass rate in students, but changing the programming tool used did not. Raw gender differences were not statistically significant; admission phase differences were initially statistically different, but not once initial ability and pedagogical approach received had been accounted for. Findings are discussed in relation to existing literature.

  • Evaluation of a simulation tool in ophthalmology: application in teaching funduscopy

    摘要: Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the Eye Retinopathy Trainer? as a teaching tool for direct ophthalmoscopy examination by comparing it with the traditional method using volunteers. Methods: Fourth year medical students received training in direct ophthalmoscopy using a simulation tool and human volunteers. Ninety students were randomized into a Simulation Group or a Control Group by the inclusion or absence of the simulation model in classroom practice. Differences between the groups were analyzed using unpaired Student’s t-test. Results: The Simulation Group was superior to the Control Group, with 51.06% successful in performing fundus examination in both the anatomical model simulation and the human model in comparison with 21.15% in the Control Group. Conclusions: The Eye Retinopathy Trainer? appears to be an effective teaching tool for practice and improvement of ophthalmologic examination among fourth year medical students.

  • Video recording in ophthalmic surgery

    摘要: Video recording in ophthalmic surgery has immense potential to drive quality improvement in patient care, ophthalmology training, and research. Not only do surgical videos permit introspective and critical analyses of surgical technique, they also allow for objective assessment, more informative audits, and are an invaluable medium for surgical education. Unfortunately, medical-grade video recording equipment is often costly. Various novel methods of video recording that utilise commercially available products offer adequate alternatives. Certain ethical and legal issues also need to be considered prior to the commencement of video recording in the operating room to protect both patient and surgeon. We review the current applications and methods of video recording in ophthalmic surgery described in the literature, as well as the potential ethical and legal issues surrounding video recording.

  • Identification of Proteins Using Four Methods of Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry

    摘要: An upper-division undergraduate- or graduate-level laboratory experiment, challenging students to identify bovine serum albumin, equine myoglobin, bovine calmodulin, and bovine cytochrome c, uses four methods of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS): linear positive, in-source decay, peptide mass fingerprint, and postsource decay. Individual hands-on experience with each method is provided in a three week experiment. The importance of sequencing proteins/peptides when identifying proteomic targets using MALDI-TOF MS is emphasized.

  • Insertion of Photovoltaic Solar Systems in Technological Education Institutions in Brazil: Teacher Perceptions Concerning Contributions towards Sustainable Development

    摘要: Teaching spaces are seen as institutions presenting relevant power to promote sustainability. Thus, in addition to knowledge (re)producers, they must also assume ethical obligations to incorporate daily sustainability-oriented actions. In this context, this study evaluates faculty perceptions regarding contributions to the teaching–learning process and the di?usion of a pedagogical practice adhering to sustainability assumptions, arising from the insertion of photovoltaic solar systems in educational institutions. A study was conducted at the Rio Grande do Norte Federal Institute of Education Science and Technology, with 2.2 photovoltaic MWp distributed throughout its 21 campuses. This study investigated teacher knowledge and attitudes towards renewable energy sources in their school practice, as a way of understanding these issues and presenting propositions that will strengthen their role in daily school life. Teachers are aware of the importance of these sources, but their knowledge does not form links with their practice. Thus, the necessary connections to promote sustainability from the existence of institutional photovoltaic systems were proven insu?cient. They did not support the concept, nor the adoption of pedagogical practices linked to this technology. In addition, teacher inability to bring knowledge related to renewable energies to the classroom and link them to daily student lives was also noted. The adoption of renewable energy to promote a sustainability culture demands the formation of teacher knowledge and attitudes, and this training must follow a continuous path.

  • Finely Controlled Circularly Polarized Luminescence of a Mechano‐Responsive Supramolecular Polymer

    摘要: By drawing on data from two studies, we describe how a strategic partnership between student affairs professionals and faculty researchers supported the expansion of a K-12 engagement-focused teaching and learning model to one that could support undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learners. The model was successfully implemented at the undergraduate level in both formal and informal STEM learning settings. We conclude by offering a Student Engagement Index as a tool that can support higher education professionals to engage HBCU students in both formal and informal STEM learning spaces.
