  • 11.4: The Fabrication of Flexible Electrofluidic Display Arrays Based on PEN Substrate

    摘要: Flexible electrofluidic display (FLEFD), as one of the most promising reflective display technology, has drawn an increasing attention in recent years. In this study, we report the fabrication process for the FLEFD based on the flexible PEN film with ITO layer on the surface. The hyflon material was selected as the hydrophobic insulator layer to control the fabrication temperature below 170°C, and the photoresist was used to manufacture the pixel grids. After oil filing and the electrical properties and optical packaging process, properties of FLEFD were both taken into consideration. The results showed that FLEFD presented good display characteristics. The driving voltage of flexible device was 14V when the bending radius of curvature was 10cm. Furthermore, response time for the device was 18ms, and the aperture opening ratio was 42.5%.

    摘要: Digital micro?uidic biochip has been developed as a promising alternative to the traditional approach of benchtop laboratory tests. Dependability is an important biochemical attribute for micro?uidic biochips that are used for safety-critical applications, such as point-of-care health assessment, air-quality monitoring, and food-safety testing. Therefore, the robust of?ine and online test techniques are required after manufacturing and during bioassay operations. In this work, we are presenting an image segmentation based testing methodology to detect the catastrophic faults and to locate the faulty cells. The design-for diagnosability scheme is proposed, and it is shown that faults can be located and tolerated by providing alternative paths in biochips. Moreover this testing method also facilitates the testing of a biochip with other bioassay operations running concurrently.

  • Controlling shedding characteristics of condensate drops using electrowetting

    摘要: We show here that ac electrowetting (ac-EW) with structured electrodes can be used to control the gravity-driven shedding of drops condensing onto ?at hydrophobic surfaces. Under ac-EW with straight interdigitated electrodes, the condensate drops shed with relatively small radii due to the ac-EW-induced reduction of contact angle hysteresis. The smaller shedding radius, coupled with the enhanced growth due to coalescence under EW, results in an increased shedding rate. We also show that the condensate droplet pattern under EW can be controlled, and the coalescence can be further enhanced, using interdigitated electrodes with zigzag edges. Such enhanced coalescence in conjunction with the electrically induced trapping effect due to the electrode geometry results in a larger shedding radius, but a lower shedding rate. However, the shedding characteristics can be further optimized by applying the electrical voltage intermittently. We ?nally provide an estimate of the condensate volume removed per unit time in order to highlight how it is enhanced using ac-EW-controlled dropwise condensation.
