A New Hands-on Course in Characterization of Wide Bandgap Devices
摘要: As wide bandgap (WBG) devices and applications move from niche to mainstream, a new generation of engineers trained in this area is critical to continue the development of the field. This paper introduces a new hands-on course in characterization of WBG devices, which is an emerging and fundamental topic in WBG-based techniques. First, the lecture-simulation-experiment format based course structure and design considerations, such as safety, are presented. Then the necessary facilities to support this hands-on course are summarized, including classroom preparation, software tools, and laboratory equipment. Afterward, the detailed course implementation flow is presented to illustrate the approach of close interaction among lecture, simulation, and experiment to maximize students’ learning outcomes. Finally, grading for students and course evaluation by students are discussed with the findings and potential improvements highlighted. Detailed course materials are provided via potenntial.eecs.utk.edu/WBGLab for educational use.

[IEEE 2019 11th Electrical Engineering Faculty Conference (BulEF) - Varna, Bulgaria (2019.9.11-2019.9.14)] 2019 11th Electrical Engineering Faculty Conference (BulEF) - Faults in photovoltaic modules and possibilities for their detection by thermographic studies
摘要: This paper presents a network security laboratory project for teaching network traffic anomaly detection methods to electrical engineering students. The project design follows a research-oriented teaching principle, enabling students to make their own discoveries in real network traffic, using data captured from a large IP darkspace monitor operated at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Although darkspace traffic does not include bidirectional conversations (only attempts to initiate them), it contains traffic related to or actually perpetrating a variety of network attacks originating from millions of Internet addresses around the world. This breadth of coverage makes this darkspace data an excellent choice for a hands-on study of Internet attack detection techniques. In addition, darkspace data is less privacy-critical than other network traces, because it contains only unwanted network traffic and no legitimate communication. In the lab exercises presented, students learn about network security challenges, search for suspicious anomalies in network traffic, and gain experience in presenting and interpreting their own findings. They acquire not only security-specific technical skills but also general knowledge in statistical data analysis and data mining techniques. They are also encouraged to discover new phenomena in the data, which helps to ignite their general interest in science and engineering research. The Vienna University of Technology, Austria, first implemented this laboratory during the summer semester 2014, with a class of 41 students. With the help of the Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) at UCSD, all exercises and IP darkspace data are publicly available.

[ASEE Conferences 2015 ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition - Seattle, Washington (2015.06.14-2015.06.17)] 2015 ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition Proceedings - A Capstone Project on Design and Development of a Digital Light Processing 3D Printer
摘要: This paper documents an undergraduate 3D printer design and development capstone project spanning multiple semesters. Recently, a team of five undergraduate mechanical and manufacturing engineering students were given the task of rebuilding a non-functional Digital Light Processing (DLP) printer which was originally designed and built at this institution. DLP process is based on curing heat sensitive resin in printing 3D objects in layers, patented by EnvisionTec. This project had been worked on two previous semesters before this team took charge and had multiple problems needed to be addressed. The project team also inherited an overheated projector as the heat source, inefficient resin box, and old resin supply. The team’s task was to fix the necessary problems with the 3D printer, make alterations to its design and equipment to increase its functionality, and get the printer to a working condition by printing a 3D part before the semester ended.

[IEEE 2018 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces (VR) - Tuebingen/Reutlingen, Germany (2018.3.18-2018.3.22)] 2018 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces (VR) - Evaluating the Effectiveness of Head-Mounted Display Virtual Reality (HMD VR) Environment on Students' Learning for a Virtual Collaborative Engineering Assembly Task
摘要: The emerging VR social networks (e.g., Facebook Spaces, Rec Room) provide opportunities for engineering faculties to design collaborative virtual engineering their classroom instruction with HMD VR system. However, we do not how this capacity will affect students’ learning and their professional skills (e.g., communication and collaboration). The proposed study is expected to fill this research gap and will use a mixed-methods design to explore students’ performance and learning outcomes in a virtual collaborative automotive assembly task. The quantitative data will be collected from the pre-and-post task survey and the task itself. This data will be used to analyze the differences among experiment and control groups. Students’ responses to the open questions in the post-task survey will serve as triangulation and provide deep insight for the quantitative results. The study is expected to not only contribute to the research field but also benefit different stakeholders in the engineering education systems.
