  • Modification of TiO <sub/>2</sub> (1?1?0)/organic hole transport layer interface energy levels by a dipolar perylene derivative

    摘要: Our photoemission study reveals that the work function of TiO2(1 1 0) decreases by up to 1.5 eV upon deposition of 9-(bis-(p-(tert-octyl)phenyl)amino)-perylene-3,4-dicarboxylic anhydride (BOPA-PDCA). This effect is attributed to a chemical reaction of TiO2(1 1 0) and the molecular anhydride group, as well as the molecular dipole. Analysis of the film thickness dependent photoemission and metastable atom electron spectroscopy data reveals that for low coverage the perylene backbone of BOPA-PDCA is almost parallel to the substrate surface and higher coverage leads to an orientational transition to essentially upright standing molecules. Comparing the energy-level alignment between TiO2(1 1 0) and the hole transport materials N,N′-bis(1-naphthyl)-N,N′-diphenyl-1,1′-biphenyl-4,4′-diamine (NPB) without and with the BOPA-PDCA interlayer, we find that the perylene derivative has a positive impact on the level alignment for dye-sensitized solar cells with high open-circuit voltages.

  • Molecular-beam resonance method with Zeeman-decelerated samples: Application to metastable helium molecules

    摘要: We use a multistage Zeeman decelerator to generate slow beams (v ≈ 100 m/s) of translationally cold, spin-polarized metastable a 3Σ+u He2 molecules and perform a precision measurement of their spin-rotation fine structure. The spin polarization results from the elimination of the high-field-seeking J = N spin-rotational component of each rotational level (rotational quantum number N) by the Zeeman deceleration process. By repopulating the J = N component from the J = N ± 1 low-field-seeking components using radio-frequency radiation, we measured the spin-rotation fine structure of 13 rovibrational levels with v = 0, 1 and N = 1–21. The low beam velocity and the resulting long interaction times with the radio-frequency radiation were exploited to determine the transition frequencies with a precision of 300 Hz.

  • Strain-Induced Metastable Phase Stabilization in Ga2O3 Thin Films

    摘要: It is well known that metastable and transient structures in bulk can be stabilized in thin films via epitaxial strain (heteroepitaxy) and appropriate growth conditions that are often far from equilibrium. However, the mechanism of heteroepitaxy, particularly how the nominally unstable or metastable phase gets stabilized, remains largely unclear. This is especially intriguing for thin film Ga2O3, where multiple crystal phases may exist under varied growth conditions with spatial and dimensional constraints. Herein, the development and distribution of epitaxial strain at the Ga2O3/Al2O3 film-substrate interfaces is revealed down to the atomic resolution along different orientations, with an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). Just a few layers of metastable α-Ga2O3 structure were found to accommodate the misfit strain in direct contact with the substrate. Following an epitaxial α-Ga2O3 structure of about couple unit cells, several layers (4~5) of transient phase appear as the intermediate structure to release the misfit strain. Subsequent to this transient crystal phase, the nominally unstable κ-Ga2O3 phase is stabilized as the major thin film phase form. We show that the epitaxial strain is gracefully accommodated by rearrangement of the oxygen polyhedra. When the structure is under large compressive strain, Ga3+ ions occupy only the oxygen octahedral sites to form a dense structure. With gradual release of the compressive strain, more and more Ga3+ ions occupy the oxygen tetrahedral sites, leading to volumetric expansion and the phase transformation. The structure of the transition phase is identified by high resolution electron microscopy (HREM) observation, complemented by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This study provides insights from the atomic scale and their implications for the design of functional thin film materials using epitaxial engineering.

  • Intrinsic Au-decoration on anodic TiO2 nanotubes grown from metastable Ti–Au sputtered alloys—High density co-catalyst decoration enhances the photocatalytic H2 evolution

    摘要: Recent work demonstrated that intrinsic Au nanoparticle decoration of TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTs) can be achieved by electrochemical anodization of Ti–Au alloy substrates. However, for a Ti–Au cast alloy produced by melt-alloying, the Au concentration cannot exceed the solubility limit of Au in Ti of 0.2 at.% – this sets constraints on the intrinsic Au nanoparticle loading on anodic TiO2 NTs. Here we explore “metastable” Ti–Au metal substrates that are produced by Ti and Au cosputtering and we establish Au concentrations that far exceed the solubility limit in cast Ti–Au alloys. We show the use of these “metastable” Ti–Au sputtered layers for the anodic formation of TiO2 NTs with a much higher density of Au nanoparticle loading than using classic alloys. Under optimized conditions (Au nanoparticle density) photocatalytic H2 production from such Au@TiO2 platforms provides a 15 times higher photocatalytic H2 evolution rate than the best rates achieved with conventional alloys.

  • Phase-Selective Synthesis of CIGS Nanoparticles with Metastable Phases Through Tuning Solvent Composition

    摘要: I-III-VI2 compounds have shown great interests in the application of functional semiconductors. Among them, Cu(In,Ga)S2 has been a promising candidate due to its excellent optoelectronic properties. Although the polymorphs of Cu(In,Ga)S2 have been attracted extensive attentions, the efforts to developing the methodologies for phase-controlled synthesis of them are rare. In this paper, we reported a phase-selective synthesis of CIGS nanoparticles with metastable phases via simply changing the composition of solvents. For the wet chemistry synthesis, the microstructure of the initial nuclei is decisive to the crystal structure of final products. In the formation of Cu(In,Ga)S2, the solvent environment is the key factor, which could affect the coordination of monomers and influence the thermodynamic conditions of Cu-S nucleation. Moreover, wurtzite and zincblende Cu(In,Ga)S2 nanoparticles are selectively prepared by choosing pure en or its mixture with deionized water as reaction solvent. The as-synthesized wurtzite Cu(In,Ga)S2 possess a band gap of 1.6 eV and a carrier mobility of 4.85 cm2/Vs, which indicates its potential to construct a heterojunction with hexagonal-structured CdS for solar cells.

  • Metastable Behavior on Cesium Fluoridea??Treated Cu(In <sub/> 1a?? <i>x</i> </sub> ,Ga <sub/><i>x</i> </sub> )Se <sub/>2</sub> Solar Cells

    摘要: Metastable behavior of cesium fluoride (CsF)-treated Cu(In1–x,Gax)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells is investigated under heat-light soaking (HLS) and heat-soaking (HS) treatments. HLS increases open-circuit voltage, fill factor, efficiency, and net carrier concentration and decreases short-circuit current density, whereas heat-soaking treatment acts oppositely. The performance of a CsF postdeposition treatment to CIGS thin film in selenium vapor, and closer to stoichiometry copper content, did not mitigate the open-circuit voltage improvement after HLS. These results argue the traditional concept of the VSe–VCu divacancy complex for the total beneficial effect of HLS in alkali-treated CIGS solar cells. The metastable behavior observed in the CsF-treated devices due to the HLS and HS treatments is explained by the specific behavior of alkali-containing new compounds at the surface and/or the migration of alkali metals at the surface and bulk regions.

  • H-D analysis employing energy transfer from He metastable excited state in double pulse LIBS at low pressure He gas

    摘要: The laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) experiment with a unique double pulse setup and operational procedure in low pressure (3 kPa) He ambient gas is performed for the study on the detection of light elements such as hydrogen (H) and deuterium (D) as well as elements of high excitation energies such as fluorine (F) and chlorine (Cl) which are usually difficult to be detected using ordinary LIBS technique. A nanosecond (ns) Nd:YAG laser operated in its fundamental wavelength with energy of 54 mJ is focused onto the Al target to generate the He plasma. Another picosecond (ps) Nd:YAG laser operated in its fundamental wavelength with energy of 2 mJ is focused onto the sample surface and activated 2 μs before the operation of ns laser. The application to polyvinylchloride (PVC) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) samples produces sharp and high intensity Cl and F emission lines. Meanwhile the sharp and well resolved H-D emission lines with merely 0.18 nm wavelength separation are also clearly detected from zircaloy sample. Further measurement of a set of zircaloy samples containing different concentrations of D yields a linear calibration curve with zero intercept. The detection limit of D is found to be about 10 ppm.

  • Polymorphism of nanocrystalline TiO <sub/>2</sub> prepared in a stagnation flame: formation of the TiO <sub/>2</sub> -II phase

    摘要: A metastable “high-pressure” phase known as a-PbO2-type TiO2 or TiO2-II is prepared via a single-step synthesis using a laminar premixed stagnation flame. Three other TiO2 polymorphs, namely anatase, rutile and TiO2-B phases, can also be obtained by tuning the oxygen/fuel ratio. TiO2-II is observed as a mixture with rutile under oxygen-lean flame conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that this phase has been identified in flame-synthesised TiO2. The formation of TiO2-II in an atmospheric pressure flame cannot be explained thermodynamically and is hypothesised to be kinetically driven through the oxidation and solid-state transformation of a sub-oxide TiO2(cid:1)x intermediate. In this scenario, rutile is nucleated from the metastable TiO2-II phase instead of directly from a molten/amorphous state. Mixtures containing three-phase heterojunctions of anatase, rutile, and TiO2-II nanoparticles as prepared here in slightly oxygen-lean flames might be important in photocatalysis due to enhanced electron–hole separation.

  • Photoacids in biochemical applications

    摘要: BACKGROUND: After excitation with light photoacids can change the pH in a solution by release of a proton. They have been used mostly for excited state proton transfer studies. In this review the general functionality and mechanisms and the subdivision of photoacids is explained. STATE OF THE ART: Different uses of photoacids are described, covering a wide range of various biochemical topics, focusing on biochemical applications. Examples for the introduced subdivisions are covered. CONCLUSIONS AND OUTLOOK: The areas in which photoacids can be employed are diverse. Photoacids have a promising future in biotechnology and biochemistry and should be considered for upcoming applications, especially in non-invasive control of biochemical reactions.

  • Effect of Ar(3p <sup>5</sup> 4p; 2p)+M → Ar(3p <sup>5</sup> 4s; 1s)+M branching ratio on optically pumped rare gas laser performance

    摘要: Optically pumped rare gas laser performance is analyzed as a function of the Ar(3p54p; 2p) + M → Ar(3p54s; 1s) + M branching ratios. Due to the uncertainty in the branching ratios, a sensitivity study is performed to determine the effect on output and absorbed pump laser intensities. The analysis is performed using a radio frequency dielectric barrier discharge as the source of metastable production for a variety of Argon in Helium mixtures over pressures ranging from 200 to 500 Torr. Peak output laser intensities show a factor of 7 increase as the branching ratio is increased from 0.25 to 1.00. The collection of Ar* in Ar(1s4) is inversely proportional to the branching ratio and decreases output laser intensity by reducing the density of species directly involved with lasing.
