  • Simulation of Circular Cylindrical Metasurfaces using GSTC-MoM

    摘要: Modeling of circular cylindrical metasurfaces using Method of Moments (MoM) based on Generalized Sheet Transition Conditions (GSTCs) is presented. GSTCs are used to link the integral equations for fields on the inner and outer contour of the circular cylindrical metasurface. The GSTC-MoM is validated by two examples: (1) anisotropic, gyrotropic metasurface capable of two field transformations, (2) non-gyrotropic metasurface capable of transforming field generated by an infinite electric line source at origin to field generated by a displaced electric line source. The formulations presented here can be used as a platform for deriving GSTC-MoM for 3D spherical and conformal metasurfaces.

  • Design of 1-Bit Coding Engineered Reflectorsfor EM-Wave Shaping and RCS Modifications

    摘要: In this article, engineered reflectors are designed and characterized for cross polarization rotation, RCS modification, and EM-wave shaping at W-band. Multiple plasmon resonances, cross-polarization rotation, reflection phase cancellation, and coding sequence principles are combined together to design the presented reflectors. First, an anisotropic unit cell consists of two E-shaped metallic resonators on the top side of a PEC backed dielectric substrate is precisely designed and optimized. The unit cell operates in a linear cross-polarization scheme from about 86GHz to 94GHz and has multiple plasmon resonances at 86.5GHz, 89.2GHz, 92.2GHz, and 93.2GHz with 100% cross-polarization conversion efficiency at these frequencies. Then this unit cell and its mirrored unit cell are used to compose a number of 1-bit coding reflective engineered reflectors to generate the “1” and “0” elements of the coding sequence required for EM-wave shaping. Four engineered reflectors of various coding sequences are designed to shape the backscattered energy to achieve one lobe, two lobes, three lobes, and four lobes. Furthermore, low-scattering diffuse reflection pattern is also achieved under both normal and oblique incidence by using a random distribution (random coding sequence) of the unit cells across the engineered reflector aperture. Both 3D full wave simulations and measurement results verify the capability of the presented surfaces in shaping the backscattered EM-wave.

    摘要: This paper presents a metasurface reflector, characterized with a 0° reflection phase, which can be tuned to operate at any frequency within the band [1.1 – 1.7] GHz and in two orthogonal polarizations independently. The proposed metasurface, based on a double layer of periodic metallic patches and varactors, behaves like an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC). By varying the capacitance values of the varactors, the positions of the resonant frequencies of the AMC can be tuned in real time. The proposed solution offers the possibility to overcome the narrow band characteristics of AMC structures and to control the two orthogonal polarizations independently.

    摘要: In this work we focus on studying the temporal dynamics of a V-type quantum emitter with two excited states, which allows to observe an interplay between different spontaneous emission channels. We show that the presence of an anisotropic metasurface enables an interaction between the two active transitions and makes it possible to achieve a strong coupling regime. We also show that if the rotation plane of the transition dipole moments is arbitrarily oriented with respect to the metasurface interface, it is possible to observe a non-reciprocal behavior.

    摘要: Magnetic resonance image quality directly depends on the signal-to-noise ratio provided by the receive coil. It was recently shown that wire metasurface can enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of the commercial scanner due to the spatial redistribution of the radiofrequency electromagnetic field through the resonant excitation of a wire metasurface eigenmode. In this work, we experimentally investigate the impact of this eigenmode on receive sensitivity enhancement of the 1.5 T birdcage coil. We proof that due to the certain spatial profile of the metasurface eigenmode, signal-to-noise ratio enhancement directly depends on the position and dimensions of the studied object on the metasurface.

  • Design and characterisation of a screen-printed millimetre-wave flexible metasurface using copper ink for communication applications

    摘要: In this paper, a design, fabrication and characterisation of metasurfaces with the anisotropic response for millimetre waves (MMW) have been presented for the seamless, secure and low-loss high-frequency communication. Two frequency bands, 29 GHz and 60 GHz have been selected for the development of an efficient, cost-effective and broadband metasurfaces constituting an octa-armed star-shaped and symmetric dual orthogonally I-shaped structures respectively. Low-cost and high-performance nanoscale printing inks and pastes have been deployed in the screen printing technique in order to perform the fabrication of designed metasurfaces on the flexible films. Electromagnetic (EM) characteristics of the proposed metasurfaces are evaluated by using the state-of-the-art testing facilities to demonstrate their potential performance attributes in wave-propagation at MMW for high data rate communication links.

  • Design of broadband polarization converter for terahertz waves

    摘要: A broadband reflective polarization converter is proposed. The unit cell of polarization converter is composed of a single-split resonant ring, a double-split resonant ring, a dielectric substrate and a metallic ground. The simulated results show that the polarization converter can convert x-polarized waves into y-polarized waves and obtain a broadband polarization conversion from 0.501 0 THz to 1.390 0 THz with the polarization conversion ratio (PCR) beyond 80% at normal incidence. Moreover, the surface current distributions are investigated to explain the polarization conversion mechanism. Finally, a good agreement is achieved between simulated and measured results. The polarization converter can be applied in terahertz imaging, communication and stealthy technology.

    摘要: This paper proposes a dual-band dual-polarization transparent metasurface centered respectively at 2.12 GHz and 4.85 GHz. The unit cell of the proposed metasurface is composed of three metallic layers where two intermediate dielectric layers are sandwiched inbetween. When an incident wave impinges the surface, orthogonal polarizations can be obtained for transmitted waves in the two operation bands. Design details and numerical analysis are presented and discussed.

    摘要: In this paper, metasurfaces with optical transparency is proposed to control either the propagation or the scattering of microwave. Specifically, we have designed a band-pass frequency selective surface (FSS) with a transmission window around 1.6 GHz and a coding metasurface for suppressing the backward scattering with broad working band from 7.8 to 15 GHz. The proposals provide new opportunities to tailor the microwave propagation and scattering with simultaneously high transmittance in visible frequencies, which could offer many benefits in practical uses, such as window and solar panel applications.

  • METASURFACE SYNTHESIS FOR TIME-HARMONIC WAVES: EXACT SPECTRAL AND SPATIAL METHODS (Invited Paper)

    摘要: Two exact approaches to synthesize metasurfaces for time-harmonic waves are discussed. The first approach is a spectral approach based on wave momentum conservation. Here, the spectral approach is applied to scalar and paraxial wave transformations. This approach effectively allows the arbitrary translation of the transformation plane parallel to the metasurface. The second approach is a direct-space approach based on the extraction of the susceptibility tensors of the metasurface elements. This approach is applied to vectorial field transformation and can be used for single or multiple transformations. An example of wave transformation by a metasurface is illustrated for each of the two approaches.
