Dimensioning a full color LED microdisplay for augmented reality headset in a very bright environment
摘要: This paper focuses on the dimensioning of a very bright full color 10 μm-pitch light-emitting device (LED) microdisplay for avionics application. Starting from the specifications of head-mounted display to be used in an augmented reality optical system, a theoretical approach is proposed that enables predicting the specifications of the main technology building blocks entering into the microdisplay manufacturing process flow. By taking into account various material and technological parameters, kept as realistic as possible, it is possible to assess the feasibility of a very bright LED microdisplay (1 Mcd/m2 full white) and to point out the main limitations. The theoretical specifications are then compared with the technical results obtained so far in the framework of the H2020 Clean Sky “HILICO” project. It shows that 350 000 cd/m2 of white emission may be accessible with the present gallium nitride (GaN)-micro-LED technology provided a color conversion solution with stable external quantum efficiency of 30% is available. Beyond such level of luminance, the inherent limitations of driving circuit (4 V, 15 μA per pixel) commands working with materials enabling higher external quantum efficiency (EQE). In particular, 10-μm-pitch micro-LEDs with electroluminescence EQE of 15% and color conversion EQE approaching 60% are needed, opening the way to future challenging material and technology research developments.

32.3: <i>Invited Paper:</i> Design of a High Performance Head Mounted 3D Display Using Micro‐OLEDs
摘要: This paper documents the development of a high performance head mounted 3D displays using Micro-OLEDs. The optical system couples commercial full resolution 1920*1080 pixel 0.71inch OLED microdisplay, having a diagonal field of view (FOV) of 53 degree and exit pupil diameter over 7mm and eye relief larger than 14 mm And the image distortion is less than 1.5%. An MTF of over 0.6 was achieved at 30lp/mm, ensuring a high image viewing quality of the display. The optical engine implements the diopter adjustment function, supporting diopter correction from +3D to -8D without degrading image quality. A driving solution based on FPGA is developed to support various high definition 3D formats.

White organic light-emitting diode (OLED) microdisplay with a tandem structure
摘要: Microdisplay is a key technology for realizing augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) devices, which have attracted much attention of late. Even though the operating voltage in the tandem structure is higher than that in the single structure, 2-stack tandem OLED exhibited 20,000 cd/m2 at 9 V, which is compatible with CMOS circuit driving. Due to its top-emitting geometry with a tandem structure, the OLED device with a well-controlled thickness exhibited a white spectrum with (0.26, 0.26) color coordinates. The pixel density of the fabricated microdisplay panel with a white tandem OLED was about 2350 pixels per inch, and the active area of the panel was 0.7 inch diagonally. The resolution of the panel was 1280 × 1024, corresponding to SXGA, and the maximal luminance was 3,000 cd/m2.

摘要: OLED Micro-displays with single crystal silicon (CMOS) backplane for VR and AR applications will be discussed. An overview of the OLED micro-display market size and requirements followed by the fabrication process, as it exists today, will be first discussed. The requirement of high brightness micro-displays for both VR and AR applications will be discussed. Recent development of a high brightness (greater than 7,000 cd/m2) full color 1920x1200 and 2Kx2K resolution OLED micro-displays at eMagin Corporation will be discussed. The performance details of this high resolution high brightness OLED micro-display will be presented.

摘要: This paper proposes an accurate current scaling circuit which is suitable for OLED or LED microdisplay driving circuit. By adding extra compensated transistor and bias circuit, current mirror transistors’ drain-source voltage (VDS) are almost equal when the new current scaling circuit copy the current to pixel circuit. Simulation results show the deviation error of current scaling ratio in proposed circuit ranges from -0.067% to 0.008% while the deviation error ranges from -9.11% to -1.11% in conventional current-mirror circuit. More accurate current scaling ratio will be benefits for improving the uniformity of the microdisplay’s luminance.
