  • Automatic Monitor-Based Tuning of an RF Silicon Photonic 1X4 Asymmetric Binary Tree True-Time-Delay Beamforming Network

    摘要: Photonic beamforming networks are promising candidates to achieve power-efficient transmission in future cellular communication systems. However, sensitivity to process and temperature variations necessitates an automatic calibration solution to enable robust operation. This paper demonstrates fully automatic monitor-based tuning of an integrated optical ring resonator-based 1X4 asymmetric binary tree optical beamforming network (OBFN). The proposed monitor-based tuning algorithm compensates fabrication variations and thermal crosstalk by controlling micro-heaters individually using information from electrical monitors. This algorithm is demonstrated on an OBFN that operates at 30 GHz with 2 GHz bandwidth and is fabricated in a standard silicon photonics foundry process. Successful calibration of the OBFN from a severely degraded initial response to the well-defined group delay responses required for a targeted radiating angle over 60? (?30? to 30?) in a linear beamforming antenna array is achieved. This fully automatic tuning approach opens the possibility of employing silicon OBFNs in real wideband mm-wave wireless communication systems.

  • Microwave Photonic Image-Reject Mixer Based on a Tunable Microwave Photonic Filter With High Rejection

    摘要: In a heterodyne receiver, the image can interfere with the desired signal and must be eliminated at the mixing stage. This paper presents a ?exible microwave photonic image-reject mixer based on a widely tunable microwave photonic ?lter (MPF), which is used to select the desired signal and suppress the image. The MPF is realized by using stimulated Brillouin scattering, which offers signi?cant advantages of wideband tunability, high selectivity, and large image rejection. In this work, a theoretical model is established to describe the operation principle of the proposed mixer at ?rst. Then, in the experiment, a 7.8-GHz radio frequency (RF) signal is successfully down-converted to an intermediate frequency signal between 0.2 and 1.5 GHz, with an image rejection of larger than 40 dB. Additionally, when the RF frequency is tuned from 1.8 to 19.8 GHz, the image rejection remains above 40 dB.

  • Comparison of Optical Single Sideband Techniques for THz-over-fiber Systems

    摘要: The use of single sideband (SSB) signals and envelope detection is a promising approach to enable the use of economic free-running lasers in photonic THz communications. To combat the signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) associated with envelope detection, broad guard bands (GBs) may be used given the large unregulated spectrum available at THz frequencies (100 GHz – 10 THz). In this scenario, the conventional way of generating SSB signals through a digital SSB filter (here referred to as the CSSB scheme) would require quite high analog digital-to-analog converter (DAC) bandwidths. Digital virtual SSB (DVSSB) and analog virtual SSB (AVSSB) have been proposed in direct-detection optical systems for relaxing the DAC bandwidth requirements. In this paper, we compare the three techniques through simulations and implement them, for the first time, in a THz-over-fiber (ToF) system operating at 250 GHz. For the transmission experiments we employ 5 GBd 16-QAM signals with three different GBs (5.5 GHz, 4.75 GHz and 3.5 GHz). The simulations show that the best performance is obtained with the AVSSB technique, while the worst is obtained with the DVSSB scheme, where the quality of the generated sideband degrades with carrier-to-sideband power ratio. In the experimental transmissions, where receiver noise was the main source of noise, similar behavior was found between the three techniques. At the 3.5 GHz GB, however, the DVSSB exhibited a penalty of 1 dB with respect to the other two. This is likely to be due to nonlinear distortions caused by the increase in the virtual tone power.
