  • Fatigue Life of Materials Strengthened by Laser Shock Processing

    摘要: The influence of the thickness of 03Х22Н6М2 stainless steel samples strengthened by laser shock processing on their fatigue life is investigated by finite-element modeling. This technology is found to increase the fatigue life of thin (2 mm) samples more than threefold.

  • Laser-Profiled Continuum Robot with Integrated Tension Sensing for Simultaneous Shape and Tip Force Estimation

    摘要: The development of miniaturized continuum robots has a wide range of applications in minimally invasive endoluminal interventions. To navigate inside tortuous lumens without impinging on the vessel wall and causing tissue damage or the risk of perforation, it is necessary to have simultaneous shape sensing of the continuum robot and its tip contact force sensing with the surrounding environment. Miniaturization and size constraint of the device have precluded the use of conventional sensing hardware and embodiment schemes. In this study, we propose the use of optical fibers for both actuation and tension/shape/force sensing. It uses a model-based method with structural compensation, allowing direct measurement of the cable tension near the base of the manipulator without increasing the dimensions. It further structurally filters out disturbances from the flexible shaft. In addition, a model is built by considering segment differences, cable interactions/cross talks, and external forces. The proposed model-based method can simultaneously estimate the shape of the manipulator and external force applied onto the robot tip. Detailed modeling and validation results demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of the proposed method for the miniaturized continuum robot for endoluminal intervention.

    摘要: Future and current high-performance computing applications will have to change and adapt as node architectures evolve. The application of advanced architecture simulators will play a crucial role for the design and optimization of future data intensive applications. In this paper, we present our simulation-based framework for analyzing the scalability and performance of a number of critical optimizations of a massively parallel genomic search application, mpiBLAST, using an advanced macroscale simulator (SST/macro). We report the use of our framework for the evaluation of three potential improvements of mpiBLAST: 1) enabling high-performance parallel output; 2) an approach for caching database fragments in memory; and 3) a methodology for pre-distributing database segments. In our experimental setup, we performed query sequence matching on the genome of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

  • Knowledge and Data-Driven Mapping of Environmental Status Indicators from Remote Sensing and VGI

    摘要: The paper proposes a transparent approach for mapping the status of environmental phenomena from multisource information based on both soft computing and machine learning. It is transparent, intended as human understandable as far as the employed criteria, and both knowledge and data-driven. It exploits remote sensing experts’ interpretations to de?ne the contributing factors from which partial evidence of the environmental status are computed by processing multispectral images. Furthermore, it computes an environmental status indicator (ESI) map by aggregating the partial evidence degrees through a learning mechanism, exploiting volunteered geographic information (VGI). The approach is capable of capturing the speci?cities of local context, as well as to cope with the subjectivity of experts’ interpretations. The proposal is applied to map the status of standing water areas (i.e., water bodies and rivers and human-driven or natural hazard ?ooding) using multispectral optical images by ESA Sentinel-2 sources. VGI comprises georeferenced observations created both in situ by agronomists using a mobile application and by photointerpreters interacting with a geographic information system (GIS) using several information layers. Results of the validation experiments were performed in three areas of Northern Italy characterized by distinct ecosystems. The proposal showed better performances than traditional methods based on single spectral indexes.

    摘要: We describe a new radio holography method of the RATAN-600 radio telescope antenna diagnosis and adjustment, using the radial movement of the reference panel. We present the results of geometric optical ray tracing of the “South + Flat” antenna system in the autocollimation mode and radio optical modeling of the hologram recording and field reconstruction procedure, taking noise into account. Estimates for necessary isolation and acceptable spatial separation between transmitting and receiving feeds, geometrical tolerances, and requirements to the reference panel motion control are discussed. The experimental results of the method application to the diagnosis of radial errors in the positioning of panels of the RATAN-600 main mirror are reported.

    摘要: On 1 September 2009, as part of a new node-based market implementation, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas transitioned from its then-prevalent data modeling processes to a new network model management system (NMMS) for model data management. This change represented the culmination of nearly four and a half years of planning and development. The NMMS provided several improvements over the then-current data maintenance processes. This paper describes some of the existing issues facing the power industry in the area of power system model data management and explains how solutions to these issues were addressed conceptually in the development of and incorporated into the final design of the NMMS. Further, this paper explains how these concepts of design and usability are now gaining wider recognition and acceptance from the industry.

  • Multiscale Simulation of Photoluminescence Quenching in Phosphorescent OLED Materials

    摘要: A multiscale simulation protocol to treat triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) in phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs), in which microscopic parameters are computed with ab initio electronic structure methods, is presented. Virtual photoluminescence experiments are performed on a prototypical PhOLED emission material consisting of 4,4?,4?-tris(N-carbazolyl)triphenylamine and fac-tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium. The obtained TTA quenching rate is comparable to experimental results in the low-intensity limit.

    摘要: Bacterial plasmids employ copy number control systems to ensure that they do not overburden their hosts. Plasmid incompatibility is caused by shared components of copy number control systems, resulting in mutual inhibition of replication. Incompatible plasmids cannot be stably maintained within a host cell. Unilateral incompatibility, in which the plasmid replicons are compatible but one plasmid encodes for the replication inhibitor of the other, leads to rapid displacement of the inhibited plasmid. Thus, we propose that the unilateral incompatibility can be used to eradicate an undesirable plasmid from a population. To investigate this process, we developed deterministic and stochastic models of plasmid dynamics. An analysis of these models provides predictions about the efficacy of plasmid displacement.

  • Hot cracking in autogenous welding of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy by rectangular pulsed Nd:YAG laser beam

    摘要: Due to high hot crack susceptibility of Al-Mg-Si alloys, autogenous welding by rectangular pulsed laser beam has not been generally successful in the removal of cracks. In this research, the effect of pulsed Nd:YAG laser parameters and preheating on the creation of hot cracks in the 6061-T6 aluminum alloy was investigated. The sample that was fabricated by the laser parameters including 1 Hz, 0.12 mm/s, 10 ms, and without preheating exhibited the highest cooling rate and the smallest dendrite arm spacing but no hot crack was observed. The tensile test specimens of this sample fractured at a point far from the weld metal and a decrease in the precipitation of silicon and magnesium in the inter-dendritic space and the reduction of thermal stresses resulted in the elimination of hot cracks. However, according to macro-scale models for the creation of hot cracks, preheating decreased the tensile stresses in the BTR (brittle temperature range), but increasing the preheating temperature led to increasing rather than decreasing the hot crack length. In this case, the formation of hydrogen porosity, the segregation of silicon and magnesium, and the creation of low melting point compounds were the important parameters affecting the hot crack initiation and growth.

    摘要: In Japan, a number of residences have introduced PV system after the Feed-in-tariff program started in 2009. After the program is over, households that consume PV power by themselves instead of selling it will increase. With this backdrop, in this paper, we perform the confidence interval estimation of the next-day apparent residential load, i.e., the difference amount between the actual residential load and PV output, with Just-In-Time modeling. Some numerical examples, which demonstrate the validity of the proposed method, are presented.
