[OSA CLEO: Applications and Technology - San Jose, California (2014..-..)] CLEO: 2014 - Compact Athermal Electro-optic Modulator Design Based on SOI Off-axis Microring Resonator
摘要: In this work, we propose efficient electro-optic modulation using compact SOI off-axis microring resonator. We show that adding an extra off-axis inner-ring in conventional microring structure provides control to compensate thermal effects on electro-optic modulator.

Silicon-Organic Hybrid Photonic Devices in a Photonic Integrated Circuit Technology
摘要: In this work, we present recent results on the hybrid integration of electro-optical organic materials in a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology. We review some of the identi?ed challenges regarding process compatibility and present experimental results on the integration of organic materials in a PIC technology using a 0.25 μm SiGe BiCMOS pilotline. Here, we are focusing on electro-optical applications toward high-speed modulators with ultra-low energy consumption.

摘要: In this article, we numerically and experimentally investigate a metamaterial geometry capable of exhibiting dual-band electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) effect in terahertz frequency regime. The meta-molecule unit consists of two asymmetric C resonators, placed alternately on both sides of a cut-wire (CW). The near field coupling between the CW and C resonators of the MM structure leads to the evolution of the dual-band EIT effect. We observe that the dual-band EIT effect can be modulated by changing the distance between the CW and the 2C resonators. Our study can play an important role in the development of multi-band slow light devices, modulators and also for sensing applications.

Design of a 90 GHz SOI Fin Electro-Optic Modulator for High-Speed Applications
摘要: Introducing high speed networks, such as the fifth generation of mobile technology and related applications including the internet of things, creates a pressing demand for hardware infrastructure that provides sufficient bandwidth. Here, silicon-based microwave-photonics presents a solution that features easy and inexpensive fabrication through a mature platform that has long served the electronics industry. In this work, the design of an electro-optic modulator is proposed where the ‘fin’ structure is adopted from the domain of electronics devices, with emphasis on the high speed of operation. The proposed modulator is customized to provide a bandwidth of 90 GHz with a small phase shifter length of 800 μm and an optical insertion loss of 4 dB. With such a speed, this proposed modulator fits high-speed applications such as modern tele-communications systems.

Comparative Study of Silicon Photonic Modulators based on Transparent Conducting Oxide and Graphene
摘要: Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) and graphene have been extensively investigated as promising materials for electro-optic modulation applications due to their dynamically configurable near-infrared properties. In this study, a detailed comparison between modulators comprising either a TCO film or a graphene-insulator-graphene structure is presented, considering a conventional silicon photonic waveguide as the underlying physical system. Both in-line and resonant configurations are investigated, integrating an electro-optic switching mechanism that changes the free-carrier concentration in the configurable material by means of electrical gating. The carrier-concentration change effect is rigorously modeled using solid-state physics principles, providing a physically consistent and straightforward comparison between the investigated material platforms. The performance of the designed modulators is thoroughly evaluated in terms of the extinction ratio, insertion loss, energy consumption, and bandwidth in both TE and TM operation. On the whole, both technologies support high-performance optical modulation, with TCO designs exhibiting an up to 40% smaller footprint, with their graphene counterparts standing out for their subpicojoule-per-bit performance on a physical system as simple as the employed silicon-wire waveguide. The low insertion losses as well as the impressive over-100-GHz switching speeds suggest both TCOs and graphene as very promising material candidates for future on-chip modulation applications.

摘要: Using numerical tools, coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmition line is optimized to be utilized in ultra-compact traveling wave electro-optic modulators (EOMs). Important factors such as minimization of the radio frequency (RF) loss, impedance mismatch, and velocity mismatch are investigated. Our results reveal that coplanar waveguide can provide conditions for ultra compact Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZM) to operate at frequencies up to terahertz range.

摘要: We demonstrate the performance and the reliable fabrication process of a 56 Gb/s wavelength-division multiplexing transmitter module with integrated feedback structures. The device is based on microring silicon depletion modulators, optimized for O-band comb-laser operation.

摘要: Barium titanate is a highly desired material for the development of advanced linear phase modulators due to its exceptional electro-optic coefficient, r51, that is over 20 times larger than the largest used in lithium niobate, r33. While the large r51 value in barium titanate has been reported, its utilization in modulators has been limited due to the difficulty in aligning the optical polarization with the crystal axes to maximize the electro-optic effect. Here we discuss the use of off-diagonal electro-optic tensor elements in thin film barium titanate modulators, present recent results, and go into further detail about the challenges and opportunities of using r51 in modulators.

摘要: Mid-infrared (2–20 μm) gas sensing allows the detection of strong molecular absorptions with rather small absorption lengths (≤1 m). Various techniques can perform spectroscopic measurements in the mid-infrared but dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) is one of the most powerful knowing its precision and real-time abilities [1]. However, setups used to perform DCS are in general complex since they require the phase locking of two independent femtosecond lasers at the known state of the art stability. This particular drawback can be bypassed if the combs are generated with electro-optic modulators (EOM) [2]. However, these equipments operate in the telecommunication wavelengths, generally near 1.55 μm where molecular absorptions are not very intense. Here, we experimentally demonstrate two different techniques of generating frequency combs with EOMs around 2 μm.
