  • Experimental exploration of mode-locking evolution mechanism in dual-ring fiber laser

摘要: We explored experimentally the mode-locking (ML) evolution mechanism of a dual-ring fiber laser. Increase of the total pump power up to 860 mW allowed the observation of the state changes from single-ring ML, dual-ring ML, to dual-ring self-starting ML. Moreover, a group of wave plates and a fixed polarization beam splitter were applied in each subring as precise attenuators. Rotation of each wave plate for an entire turn allowed the investigation of the ML evolution of the two subrings based on the intracavity power variation in each subring. The variation periodicity of the output power was analyzed for each subring and was found to be consistent with the theoretical results. Furthermore, the ML detachment threshold in each subring was estimated to explain the ML evolution. Our study provides a deeper understanding of the ML evolution in dual-ring fiber lasers and can aid their future optimal design for dual comb applications.

  • Nonlinear Fiber Optics || Stimulated Raman scattering

摘要: Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) is an important nonlinear process that can turn optical fibers into broadband Raman amplifiers and tunable Raman lasers. It can also severely limit the performance of multichannel lightwave systems by transferring energy from one channel to the neighboring channels. This chapter is devoted to a thorough study of SRS phenomenon in optical fibers. Section 8.1 presents the basic theory behind SRS with emphasis on the pump power required to reach the Raman threshold. SRS under continuous-wave (CW) and quasi-CW conditions is considered in Section 8.2, where we also discuss the performance of fiber-based Raman lasers and amplifiers. Ultrafast SRS occurring for pulses of 100-ps width or less is considered in Sections 8.3 and 8.4 for normal and anomalous group-velocity dispersion (GVD), respectively. In both cases, attention is paid to the walk-off effects together with those resulting from self-phase modulation (SPM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM). Section 8.5 focuses on the polarization effects.

  • Nonlinear process-induced spectral changes in hydrogenated amorphous silicon core optical fibre

摘要: In this paper, the spectral properties of temporal double pulses centred at the same central wavelength and two different central wavelengths are numerically presented based on hydrogenated amorphous silicon core optical fibre. In order to characterise the output spectra of double pulses, the group velocity dispersion and various nonlinear processes including self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation, two-photon absorption, free carrier absorption and free carrier dispersion are considered in the theoretical model. Numerical results show that, under fixed fibre length condition, the widths of the outcome spectra are strongly dependent on the delay times, peak powers and initial chirps of input double pulses, i.e. widths of the output spectra are proportional to the launched peak powers, and the delay times control the separation between two pulses, resulting in the spectral change within a proper delay time, and the spectral widths are compressed or extended by judiciously adjusting the initial chirps imposed on the input pulses.
