  • Perceptually Validated Cross-Renderer Analytical BRDF Parameter Remapping

    摘要: Material appearance of rendered objects depends on the underlying BRDF implementation used by rendering software packages. A lack of standards to exchange material parameters and data (between tools) means that artists in digital 3D prototyping and design, manually match the appearance of materials to a reference image. Since their effect on rendered output is often non-uniform and counter intuitive, selecting appropriate parameterisations for BRDF models is far from straightforward. We present a novel BRDF remapping technique, that automatically computes a mapping (BRDF Difference Probe) to match the appearance of a source material model to a target one. Through quantitative analysis, four user studies and psychometric scaling experiments, we validate our remapping framework and demonstrate that it yields a visually faithful remapping among analytical BRDFs. Most notably, our results show that even when the characteristics of the models are substantially different, such as in the case of a phenomenological model and a physically-based one, our remapped renderings are indistinguishable from the original source model.

  • Linking luminance and lightness by global contrast normalization

    摘要: In the present experiment we addressed the question of how the visual system determines surface lightness from luminances in the retinal image. We measured the perceived lightness of target surfaces that were embedded in custom-made checkerboards. The checkerboards consisted of 10 by 10 checks of 10 different reflectance values that were arranged randomly across the board. They were rendered under six viewing conditions including plain view, with a shadow-casting cylinder, or with one of four different transparent media covering part of the board. For each reflectance we measured its corresponding luminance in the different viewing conditions. We then assessed the lightness matches of four observers for each of the reflectances in the different viewing conditions. We derived predictions of perceived lightness based on local luminance, Michelson contrast, edge integration, anchoring theory, and a normalized Michelson contrast measure. The normalized contrast measure was the best predictor of surface lightness and was almost as good as the actual reflectance values. The normalized contrast measure combines a local computation of Michelson contrast with a region-based normalization of contrast ranges with respect to the contrast range in plain view. How the segregation of image regions is accomplished remains to be elucidated.

  • The natural statistics of blur

    摘要: Blur from defocus can be both useful and detrimental for visual perception: It can be useful as a source of depth information and detrimental because it degrades image quality. We examined these aspects of blur by measuring the natural statistics of defocus blur across the visual field. Participants wore an eye-and-scene tracker that measured gaze direction, pupil diameter, and scene distances as they performed everyday tasks. We found that blur magnitude increases with increasing eccentricity. There is a vertical gradient in the distances that generate defocus blur: Blur below the fovea is generally due to scene points nearer than fixation; blur above the fovea is mostly due to points farther than fixation. There is no systematic horizontal gradient. Large blurs are generally caused by points farther rather than nearer than fixation. Consistent with the statistics, participants in a perceptual experiment perceived vertical blur gradients as slanted top-back whereas horizontal gradients were perceived equally as left-back and right-back. The tendency for people to see sharp as near and blurred as far is also consistent with the observed statistics. We calculated how many observations will be perceived as unsharp and found that perceptible blur is rare. Finally, we found that eye shape in ground-dwelling animals conforms to that required to put likely distances in best focus.

  • Perception of light source distance from shading patterns

    摘要: Varying the distance of a light source from an object alters both the intensity and spatial distribution of surface shading patterns. We tested whether observers can use such cues to infer light source distance. Participants viewed stereoscopic renderings of rough objects with diffuse and glossy surfaces, which were illuminated by a point source at a range of distances. In one task, they adjusted the position of a small probe dot in three dimensions to report the apparent location of the light in the scene. In a second task, they adjusted the shading on one object (by moving an invisible light source) until it appeared to be illuminated from the same distance as another object. Participants’ responses increased linearly with the true light source distance, suggesting that they have clear intuitions about how light source distance affects shading patterns for a variety of different surfaces. However, there were also systematic errors: Subjects overestimated light source distance in the probe adjustment task, and in both experiments, roughness and glossiness affected responses. We find the pattern of results is predicted surprisingly well by a simplistic model based only on the area of the image that exceeds a certain intensity threshold. Thus, although subjects can report light source distance, they may rely on simple—sometimes erroneous—heuristics to do so.

  • MatMix 1.0: Using optical mixing to probe visual material perception

    摘要: MatMix 1.0 is a novel material probe we developed for quantitatively measuring visual perception of materials. We implemented optical mixing of four canonical scattering modes, represented by photographs, as the basis of the probe. In order to account for a wide range of materials, velvety and glittery (asperity and meso-facet scattering) were included besides the common matte and glossy modes (diffuse and forward scattering). To test the probe, we conducted matching experiments in which inexperienced observers were instructed to adjust the modes of the probe to match its material to that of a test stimulus. Observers were well able to handle the probe and match the perceived materials. Results were robust across individuals, across combinations of materials, and across lighting conditions. We conclude that the approach via canonical scattering modes and optical mixing works well, although the image basis of our probe still needs to be optimized. We argue that the approach is intuitive, since it combines key image characteristics in a "painterly" approach. We discuss these characteristics and how we will optimize their representations.

  • Stereoscopic advantages for vection induced by radial, circular, and spiral optic flows

    摘要: Although observer motions project different patterns of optic flow to our left and right eyes, there has been surprisingly little research into potential stereoscopic contributions to self-motion perception. This study investigated whether visually induced illusory self-motion (i.e., vection) is influenced by the addition of consistent stereoscopic information to radial, circular, and spiral (i.e., combined radial t circular) patterns of optic flow. Stereoscopic vection advantages were found for radial and spiral (but not circular) flows when monocular motion signals were strong. Under these conditions, stereoscopic benefits were greater for spiral flow than for radial flow. These effects can be explained by differences in the motion aftereffects generated by these displays, which suggest that the circular motion component in spiral flow selectively reduced adaptation to stereoscopic motion-in-depth. Stereoscopic vection advantages were not observed for circular flow when monocular motion signals were strong, but emerged when monocular motion signals were weakened. These findings show that stereoscopic information can contribute to visual self-motion perception in multiple ways.

  • Mesopic luminance assessed with minimally distinct border perception

    摘要: In photopic vision, the border between two fields is minimally distinct when the two fields are isoluminant; that is, when the achromatic luminance of the two fields is equal. The distinctness of a border between extrafoveal reference and comparison fields was used here as an isoluminance criterion under a variety of adaptation conditions ranging from photopic to scotopic. The adjustment was done by trading off the amount of blue against the amount of red in the comparison field. Results show that isoluminant border settings are linear under all constant adaptation conditions, though varying with state of adaptation. The relative contribution of rods and cones to luminance was modeled such that the linear sum of the suitably weighted scotopic and photopic luminance is constant for the mesopic isoluminant conditions. The relative weights change with adapting intensity in a sigmoid fashion and also depend strongly on the position of the border in the visual field.

    摘要: A key role in the advancement of 3 Dimensional TV services is played by the development of 3D video quality metrics used for the assessment of the perceived quality. Moreover, this key role can only be supported when the features associated with the 3D video nature is reliably and efficiently characterized in these metrics. In this study, z-direction motion incorporated with significant depth levels in depth map sequences are considered as the main characterizations of the 3D nature. The 3D video quality metrics can be classified into three categories based on the need for the reference video during the assessment process at the user end: Full Reference (FR), Reduced Reference (RR) and No Reference (NR). In this study we propose a NR quality metric, PNRM, suitable for on-the-fly 3D video services. In order to evaluate the reliability and effectiveness of the proposed metric, subjective experiments are conducted in this paper. Observing the high correlation with the subjective experimental results, it can be clearly stated that the proposed metric is able to mimic the Human Visual System (HVS).
