  • Thomas Young e a teoria ondulatória da luz no início do século XIX: aspectos conceituais e epistemológicos

    摘要: In science teaching, reports concerning contributions from important characters in the History of Physics are, most of time, simplistic, focusing only on crucial experiments or specific findings, without considering the aspects of the context in which the researcher was immersed. This is the case of the figure of Thomas Young, who – regarding the wave theory of light – is often associated with the double-slit experiment. In this paper, we present, in a detailed way, the contribution given by Thomas Young for the development of the wave theory of light. Considering the general context of the time, we emphasize the conceptual and epistemological aspects, aiming to contribute for the discussion on Nature of Science (NoS) aspects in science teaching.

  • Reflection Without Regress

    摘要: Regress arguments show that to do something for a reason, one does not have to have reflectively endorsed that reason. This might seem to establish that reflection does not play a fundamental role in agency. This paper argues that this conclusion rests on too narrow a conception of agency. If agents are not just creatures who act for reasons but also creatures who can take ownership of the reasons for which they act, then there is a central role for reflection to play in agency even if it’s not the role that philosophers of action have typically envisioned for it.

  • Utilizing History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) to Teach Physics: The Case of Electromagnetic Theory

    摘要: Here the paper provides a historical and philosophical analysis of the development of electromagnetic theory in physics teaching for the benefit of scientific literacy. The analysis is described by the paradigms offered by Kuhn. A number of scientists‘ work in electromagnetic theory which is embedded in the tension between engaging in revolutionary science and normal science provides an insight into how scientific work is thought to proceed. The work of revolutionary scientists: Faraday and Maxwell, who were pivotal in developing the understanding of electromagnetic radiation. A group of scientists now known as the Maxwellians were integral to refining and clarifying Maxwell‘s theory. By realizing these things, the students will become inspired and reinforced in resolve to understand the richness of scientific discovery.

Furthermore, it examines the concept of time, the phenomenology of life and death, and the role of medicine and science in understanding human existence. The paper concludes with a reflection on the importance of integrating philosophy and medicine to better comprehend the human condition.
