  • Tailorable and Flexible Conducting Films via Interfacial Modification of Polymer Fibers

    摘要: Portable devices have become lightweight, flexible, and even stretchable such that skin-like electronics are widely applicable, including in biomedical devices, soft robotics, and human/machine interfaces. Rendering these devices soft and flexible is highly desirable, as this would enable them to interact seamlessly with human skin and improve their wearing comfort. We demonstrate a convenient but effective method to fabricate flexible conducting films. These films consist of electrospun polyurethane (PU) fibers as the flexible substrate onto which copper was deposited. These Cu-PU films have excellent conductivity, and their resistance only increases slightly after extensive folding, even when folded into a paper crane with a resistance of 1.8 Ω. Furthermore, Cu-PU films can sense tension strength and exhibit stable Joule electrothermal performance. The Cu-PU-based heating glove could be heated to 40 °C in 30 s by applying 2 V. The simple but effective procedure presented here is suitable to fabricate flexible conducting film and may also promote the development of portable and flexible electronic products.

  • Polymer Fiber Optic Sensors – A Mini Review of their Synthesis and Applications

    摘要: Fiber optic sensors (FOSs) are optical fiber based sensing devices that have been widely used to detect physical, chemical and biological parameters. Polymer optical fibers (POFs), an important type of optical fibers, have been stifled their talents in the field of optical sensing due to the overwhelming popularity of glass optical fibers (GOFs). The unique physical and chemical properties of POFs start attracting interests to be utilized in the fabrication of high performance sensors in recent years. This article reviews the recent progress of POFs based FOSs. In particular, the article will focus on novel techniques implemented on the POF sensor fabrication, including monolayer graphene, evanescent wave absorption, localized surface plasmon resonance and fiber Bragg grating.

  • High-Speed All-Optical Modulator Based on a Polymer Nanofiber Bragg Grating Printed by Femtosecond Laser

    摘要: On-chip optical modulator for high-speed information processing system has been widely investigated by majority of researchers but the connection with the fiber system is a difficulty. The fiber-based optical modulator is a good solution to this problem. Fiber Bragg Grating has good potential to be used as an optical modulator because of its linear temperature response, narrow bandwidth, and compact structure. In this paper, a new fiber-integrated all-optical modulator has been realized based on a polymer nanofiber Bragg grating printed by femtosecond laser. This device exhibits a fast temporal response of 176 ns and a good linear modulation of -45.43 pm/mW. Moreover, its stability has also been studied. This work firstly employs Bragg resonance to realize a fiber-integrated all-optical modulator and paves the way toward realization of multifunctional lab-in-fiber devices.
