  • Thiol-ene reaction based polymer dispersed liquid crystal composite films with low driving voltage and high contrast ratio

    摘要: In this study, polymer dispersed liquid crystal composite films are obtained via a one-step fabrication technique based on photo-initiated polymerization-induced phase separation in a thiol-vinyl ether reaction. The effects of the compositions of two vinyl monomers, curing light intensity, curing light time, liquid crystal content and thiol content on the electro-optic properties of the polymer dispersed liquid crystal films were systematically investigated. It was demonstrated that a composite film with a low driving voltage (33.7 V), high contrast ratio (228.1) and short response time (<5.0 ms) was achieved. This is of great significance for the potential applications of polymer dispersed liquid crystal composite films.

  • Polymer dispersed nematic liquid crystal films with conical boundary conditions for electrically controllable polarizers

    摘要: Polymer dispersed nematic liquid crystal (PDNLC) ?lms with conical boundary conditions at the LC-polymer interface are considered. The conical surface anchoring with tilt angle 40° initiates forming the axial-bipolar director con?guration inside nematic droplets. This droplet structure exhibits the strong scattering of light polarized parallel to the bipolar axis. In the initial state, the bipolar axes in all droplets are oriented randomly, and therefore PDNLC ?lm scatters a light of any polarization. Electric ?eld applied along the ?lm plane orients the bipolar axes unidirectionally in the whole droplet ensemble, that results in its high polarization-dependent transmittance. Such PDNLC ?lms can be used in the electrically controllable linear polarizers characterized by 89% value of the transmittance for the perpendicular polarized light and high extinction ratio 590:1 at the electric ?eld 0.34 V/μm.

  • Determination of Phase Transition and Electro-optical Behaviors of Quantum Dot Doped Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal

    摘要: This paper describes our research into phase transition, electro-optical and dielectric behaviors of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) and cadmium selenide sulphide/zinc sulphide quantum dot (QD) doped PDLC (PDLC/QD). The PDLC was prepared with nematic liquid crystal (E63) and UV-curable photopolymer (NOA65) by using a polymerization induced phase separation technique. Dielectric properties of composites were investigated with a dielectric/impedance analyzer at 1 kHz–10 MHz frequency range. Electro-optical measurements of investigated samples were carried out using an electro-optical switching method. Phase transition temperature of PDLC and PDLC/QD composites was also determined, using a differential scanning calorimeter. The results showed that the introduction of QD signi?cantly changes the physical properties of PDLC, and these changes could become a focus of interest for future applications.

  • Influence of structural parameters on organic semiconducting polymer lasers with an external holographic grating as feedback layer

    摘要: We report on the fabrication and characterization of an organic distributed feedback laser excited from a semiconducting polymer gain layer, poly(2-methoxy-5-(20-ethyl-hexyloxy)-p-phenyl-envinylene) (MEH-PPV). A holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal grating is fabricated on top of the homogeneous MEH-PPV layer as an external cavity. We established a model to calculate the con?nement factor Γ. With the change of laser structural parameters (the refractive index of the grating layer, the ?lm thickness of the MEH-PPV layer, etc.), the con?nement factor Γ changes accordingly. It was found that a single longitudinal lasing mode could be observed only when the con?nement factor Γ was in a speci?c range. Choosing a reasonable thickness of gain ?lm and prepolymer with higher refractive index can obtain a lower threshold emission laser.

  • Evaluation of Energy and Daylight Performance of Old Office Buildings in South Korea with Curtain Walls Remodeled Using Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) Films

    摘要: Globally, energy standards for new buildings are being reinforced to improve energy efficiency, and remodeling policies are being promoted for old buildings. The South Korean Government is promoting green remodeling projects, and focusing on research and product development to improve the performance of old windows and curtain walls. In line with this, the present study proposes two remodeling methods using polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films, which can adjust solar radiation for old office buildings. In addition, energy efficiency improvement and daylight performance according to remodeling were analyzed. Attaching PDLC films to the glass of old curtain walls was analyzed; this can reduce heating and cooling energy, reduce the annual discomfort glare occurrence rate, and increase the annual indoor appropriate illuminance ratio. Furthermore, producing a window by laminating a PDLC film between two sheets of glass and putting it over the existing curtain wall was also analyzed; this can reduce annual building energy consumption and the annual discomfort glare occurrence rate, and improve the annual indoor appropriate illuminance ratio. Therefore, PDLC film is expected to be applicable as a next-generation green remodeling material because using it in remodeling can improve energy efficiency of old office buildings and indoor daylight performance.

  • Mitigation of Image Blurring for Performance Enhancement in Transparent Displays Based on Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal

    摘要: In this paper, we propose an effective real-time image enhancing technology for transparent displays based on polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC). The image enhancing technology consists of both global and local enhancement functions. It not only removes the affected haze but also sharpens the edge regions for transparent PDLC displays. This technology can improve the image quality such as contrast, brightness, color saturation, and gamma correction for transparent PDLC displays. The experimental results indicated that our proposed method can effectively enhance the visibility and remove the affected haze in the transparent PDLC display.

  • Spray Deposition of Ag Nanowire–Graphene Oxide Hybrid Electrodes for Flexible Polymer–Dispersed Liquid Crystal Displays

    摘要: We investigated the effect of different spray-coating parameters on the electro-optical properties of Ag nanowires (NWs). Highly transparent and conductive Ag NW–graphene oxide (GO) hybrid electrodes were fabricated by using the spray-coating technique. The Ag NW percolation network was modi?ed with GO and this led to a reduced sheet resistance of the Ag NW–GO electrode as the result of a decrease in the inter-nanowire contact resistance. Although electrical conductivity and optical transmittance of the Ag NW electrodes have a trade-off relationship, Ag NW–GO hybrid electrodes exhibited signi?cantly improved sheet resistance and slightly decreased transmittance compared to Ag NW electrodes. Ag NW–GO hybrid electrodes were integrated into smart windows based on polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) for the ?rst time. Experimental results showed that the electro-optical properties of the PDLCs based on Ag NW–GO electrodes were superior when compared to those of PDLCs based on only Ag NW electrodes. This study revealed that the hybrid Ag NW–GO electrode is a promising material for manufacturing the large-area ?exible indium tin oxide (ITO)-free PDLCs.

  • Electrically Tunable Binary-Phase Fresnel Lens Based on Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal

    摘要: This is a proposal for a Fresnel lens with an electrically tunable binary-phase made of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC), which has relatively fast response time and low applied voltage. Simple fabrication is the major advantage of the proposed method. In this study, NOA65 and E7 were utilized with weight ratios of 60 wt.%: 40 wt.%. There was also the utilization of a relatively low intensity UV-light, 0.53 mW/cm2. The duration time of exposure was about 30 hours. The performance improvement of the Fresnel lens resulted from the infiltration of large LC droplet into the PDLC film. The phenomenon of black cross strip patterns could be explained with the use of the electro-hydrodynamics theory. The diffraction efficiency of the proposed lens was from 31.1 % to 41 % with the changes of externally applied voltage. This work presents an effective approach to get relatively complete phase separation in PDLC. The proposed method also provides great potential in developing high performance Fresnel lens.
