Vertically coupled InP/InGaAsP microring lasers using a single epitaxial growth and single-side lithography
摘要: The experimental demonstration of vertical microring lasers requiring only one single epitaxial growth and two single-side lithographic steps is presented, in what is the simplest fabrication scheme for such devices published to date. The fabricated lasers show series resistance of around 20 Ω at forward bias, threshold currents at room temperature between 35 and 58 mA, and single-mode emission with a side-lobe suppression ratio higher than 30 dB. The measured optic output power level is of tens of microwatts. The approach allows the improvement of the optical features maintaining the simplicity of the manufacturing procedure.

Comprehensive modeling and design of Raman lasers on SOI for mid-infrared application
摘要: In this paper, we present a comprehensive model for a CW Raman laser in a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. We validate this model by comparing its output with experimental results from the literature. We then design a 2.232 μm Raman laser with an on-chip ring resonator cavity. Numerical analysis of laser characteristics, such as threshold power and output power, are conducted. The optimized values for the cavity length and power coupling ratios are determined taking into account fabrication variations. Finally, by designing a tunable directional coupler (DC) for the laser cavity, a robust design of Raman laser is presented. We show that the reduction of propagation loss down to 0.6 dB/cm for the silicon waveguides and free carriers removal, by the use of a p-i-n junction, will enable a Raman laser with a threshold power of 16 mW and a slope efficiency of 62%.

摘要: Nanolayers of MoSe2, NiO, VO2, Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3, Sb2Te3 compounds were fabricated using MOCVD technology. They were grown directly or mechanically deposited as a mixture with the polymer on the surface of tapered section of fibers. Tapers were fabricated by chemical etching. The deposition process was carried out in a special tubular quartz reactor with in-situ monitoring of optical transmission in the range of wavelength 1–1.65 μm. According to AFM, the deposited films consist of islands and occupy an insignificant part of the fiber surface. Tapers coated by 2D nanoislands were embedded in the ring circuit of an erbium fiber laser and tested as passive Q-switch. A transition from the continuous CW mode to the Q-switch mode was achieved for several samples with a taper diameter of less than 11 μm. For tapers of larger diameter the transition to the Q-switch mode was observed only when nanoislands of 2D compound were coated by polymer.

摘要: A single-frequency ring laser using two standard commercial diode-pumped Nd:YAG modules is demonstrated. Employing a dynamically stable resonator design, multi-longitudinal mode operation at 1064 nm with 53 W of output power was obtained. When inserting a LBO crystal in the resonator, 1.8 W of single-sided, single-frequency output at 532 nm was achieved. The measured linewidth was 3.6 MHz, close to the resolution limit of the scanning etalon used to measure the longitudinal mode structure.

Electrically Pumped Microring Parity-Time- Symmetric Lasers
摘要: Microscale and nanoscale electrically pumped lasers are expected to play an indispensable role in future photonic integrated circuits. Small footprint, low threshold, high efficiency, and large side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) are among the most important characteristics that such on-chip emitters should exhibit—allowing for large-scale integrability, low energy consumption, and stable output power. Microring resonators are one of the main contenders for the realization of such compact light sources. However, the use of microring laser cavities has been so far hindered by their tendency to operate in multiple modes. Quite recently, several studies have shown that notions from parity-time (PT)-symmetry and non-Hermitian physics can be utilized to effectively enforce single-mode operation in semiconductor microring laser arrangements. However, as of now, most works in this area were mainly devoted to the proof of concept demonstrations, while the feasibility of practical implementation has remained largely unexplored. In this article, we demonstrate the first regrowth free, electrically pumped microscale PT-symmetric laser. Our results can pave the way toward the utilization of exceptional points in more diverse applications ranging from on-chip light sources and modulators to laser beam steering systems and active sensors.

Multi-stable Operation of a Semiconductor Ring Laser Due to Spatial Hole-Burning
摘要: We have theoretically analyzed multi-stability of a symmetric ring laser operating in one single longitudinal mode in the presence of coherent back scattering and inversion-grating-induced mutual coupling of the clockwise and counter-clockwise modes. Our model takes into account the inversion grating created by the standing-wave pattern of the interfering counter-propagating fields and avoids the frequently used ad-hoc introduction of cross and self-saturation coefficients. Our study confirms that linear coupling due to waveguide irregularities or weak interface reflections leads to an effective pump strength the clock and anti-clock wise modes are below which symmetrically coupled whereas above which the grating-induced coupling leads to multi-stability.
