  • Real-time signal processing for sub-THz range grating-based distributed fiber sensing

    摘要: Distributed optical fiber sensors are an increasingly utilized method of gathering distributed strain and temperature data. However, the large amount of data they generate presents a challenge that limits their use in real-time, in situ applications. This article describes a parallel and pipelined computing architecture that accelerates the signal-processing speed of sub-terahertz fiber sensor arrays, maintaining high spatial resolution while allowing for expanded use of real-time sensing and control applications. The computing architecture described was successfully implemented in a field programmable gate array chip. The signal processing for the entire array takes only 12 system clock cycles. In addition, this design removes the necessity of storing any raw or intermediate data.

  • Low-Resolution Digital Pre-Compensation for High Speed Optical Links based on Dynamic Digital-to-Analog Conversion

    摘要: Digital pre-compensation (DPC) is considered a promising technique for high throughput optical communication systems. The digital signal processing (DSP) at the transmitter relies on the availability of high-speed and high-resolution digital-to-analog devices to generate complex analog waveforms. However, one major challenge in current DACs technology is the limited resolution, which introduces dominant quantization distortions when extensive DSP is implemented. In this paper a dynamic quantization (DQ) approach is suggested, termed as digital-resolution-enhancer (DRE), which mitigates the quantization distortion effects. This approach is based on the underlying assumption that quantization is a non-linear deterministic operation, implying that its impact on transmission can be anticipated and minimized. The proposed method is theoretically and experimentally investigated with special focus on linear pre-compensation for bandwidth limited systems. Simulation results demonstrate that the DRE improves the signal-to-quantization-noise-ratio (SQNR) by up to 8dB. Thus, the DPC can be applied with reduced number of DAC’s bits. Conversely, the DRE can enable the use of more complex DPC schemes using the same DACs hardware, and consequently achieve extended reaches and higher transmission rates. Numerical simulations are verified by a set of extensive lab experiments. For electrical back-to-back (BTB) transmission, with an analog bandwidth of 13 GHz, 45 Gbaud QAM-64 is demonstrated using only 4 bits DACs. For optical BTB setup with an overall optoelectronic bandwidth of less than 5 GHz, 32 Gbaud QAM-4 is demonstrated using only 2.6 bits DACs.

This work has the objective to better characterize the digital bridge at ac resistance comparisons, especially with standards of different nominal values. The results obtained indicate that the digital bridge is in agreement with the coaxial one within parts in 106.

    摘要: Broadband laser based terahertz systems become currently established for inline multilayer paint inspection in the automotive industry. This technology has also proven to be suitable for inspections of certain multilayer plastic structures with up to a few millimeters of thickness. We present a complementary technique for the measurement of dielectric multilayer structures with thicknesses of submillimeter to several centimeters, using frequency-modulated continuous-wave electronic transceivers. In order to resolve layers below the inherent resolution limit by the modulation bandwidth, we take advantage of model-based signal processing techniques.

    摘要: The Bio-Imaging and Signal Processing Technical Committee (BISP-TC) of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) promotes activities in the broad technical areas of computerized image and signal processing with a clear focus on applications in biology and medicine. Specific topics of interest include image reconstruction, compressed sensing, superresolution, image restoration, registration and segmentation, pattern recognition, object detection, localization, tracking, quantification and classification, machine learning, multimodal image and signal fusion, analytics, visualization, and statistical modeling. Application areas covered by the TC include biomedical imaging from nano to macroscale, encompassing all modalities of molecular imaging and microscopy, anatomical imaging, and functional imaging, as well as genomic signal processing, computational biology, and bioinformatics, with the ultimate overarching aim of enabling precision medicine.

  • An Enhanced Time-Reversal Imaging Algorithm-Driven Sparse Linear Array for Progressive and Quantitative Monitoring of Cracks

    摘要: A Lamb wave and linear piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) array-based monitoring method for the detection and quantification of crack damage is presented in this paper. Because existing PZT array arrangements are not suitable for quantitative monitoring of crack damage both in orientation and in length, a sparse linear PZT array is introduced and applied to collect crack reflections. Based on this new array, a method for estimating crack orientation is proposed. An amplitude spectrum as a function of angle is mapped using time delayed and summed signals. By finding the peaks in the spectra, the central actuator element and corresponding orientation angle are determined. Furthermore, the time of flight imaging method is modified to display and evaluate cracks quantitatively. Validating experiments are conducted on a T6061 aluminum plate, monitoring and evaluating single and connected cracks with various orientations in different locations. As suggested by the experiments, the orientation of most cracks can be well recognized and all cracks can be quantitatively displayed by the proposed methods.

  • Frequency pair model for selection of signal spectral components to determine position of zero optical-path difference in a pulse-train interferometer

    摘要: High-accuracy measurement using phase information of fringe patterns – that is not much affected by amplitude noises – than amplitude information, in a pulse-train interferometer is demonstrated in this study. However, the selection criteria for spectral components of the measured interferogram for regeneration of phase information are not obvious. In this work, a frequency pair model is proposed. The experimental work demonstrates the model’s ability to optimally select signal components. The application field of pulse-train or white-light interferometers may be extended by associating them with the proposed method.

  • Tutorial: Broadband fiber-wireless integration for 5G+ communication

    摘要: The increased bandwidth demand has motivated the exploration of fiber-wireless integration (FWI) for future broadband 5G+ cellular communication networks. FWI offers ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless delivery with low interference, which will be prospective for 5G/5G+ mobile communication wireless access, military application, disaster emergency communication, broadband communication at home, and so on. As an effective carrier, millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequencies between 30 GHz and 300 GHz are a new frontier for FWI that offers the promise of orders of magnitude greater bandwidths. In this paper, we summarize all kinds of enabling technologies for FWI, including the photonic vector mm-wave generation scheme, the integration of various multi-dimensional multiplexing techniques, radio-frequency-transparent (RF-transparent) photonic demodulation technology for fiber-wireless-fiber network, and low-complexity high-efficiency digital signal processing (DSP). Based on DSP for UWB high-spectrum-efficiency signal coherent detection, we have made great progress in the field of the mm-wave-band (from Q- to D-band) broadband signal generation and long-distance transmission. These experimental results show that FWI with large-capacity, long-distance, and high-spectrum-efficiency has important scientific and practical significance for the development of the future 5G+ wireless communication.

    摘要: Light?eld data captured by a lenslet-based image sensor is typically demosaicked, aligned and rearranged into a series of sub-aperture (viewpoint) images, before a disparity-compensated coding scheme is employed for compression. In this paper, we focus on the problem of soft decoding of block-based compressed sub-aperture images at the decoder: given quantization bin indices of DCT coef?cients of non-overlapping code blocks, we select appropriate coef?cient values that are low-pass ?ltered using graph spectral ?lters and view-consistent across sub-aperture images via projection on convex sets (POCS). Speci?cally, after an initial pixel estimate, we low-pass ?lter each pixel block using accelerated graph ?lters based on the Lanczos method. We then map ?ltered pixels to a neighborhood of sub-aperture images based on estimated disparity to enforce indexed quantization bin constraints of multiple images. Experimental results show that our algorithm achieves PSNR gain of 2.34dB over JPEG hard decoding.
