摘要: Evaluating patient progress and making discharge decisions regarding inpatient medical rehabilitation rely upon the standard clinical assessments administered by trained clinicians. Wearable inertial sensors can offer more objective measures of patient movement and progress. We undertook a study to investigate the contribution of wearable sensor data to predict discharge functional independence measure (FIM) scores for 20 patients at an inpatient rehabilitation facility. The FIM utilizes a seven-point ordinal scale to measure patient independence while performing several activities of daily living, such as walking, grooming, and bathing. Wearable inertial sensor data were collected from ecological ambulatory tasks at two time points mid-stay during inpatient rehabilitation. Machine learning algorithms were trained with sensor-derived features and clinical information obtained from medical records at admission to the inpatient facility. While models trained only with clinical features predicted discharge scores well, we were able to achieve an even higher level of prediction accuracy when also including the wearable sensor-derived features. Correlations as high as 0.97 for leave-one-out cross validation predicting discharge FIM motor scores are reported.

摘要: Metasurfaces offer unique opportunities for optical signal processing and the design of neuromorphic optical networks for image-processing. Among different image-processing operations, edge detection is one of the essential algorithms with practical applications in microscopy or autonomous systems. The edge detection removes the plain parts of an image, to keep only the edges where the intensity changes abruptly. As such, the processed image contains just silhouettes of the object, Fig. 1a. In microscopy, edge detection helps to identify the structure of cells, while in autonomous systems, such as cars or drones, the optical edge detection can reduce the volume of data to compute on board of the vehicle, making it work faster and safer. To date, there have been several theoretical studies on metasurfaces for edge detection, however, an experimental demonstration is missing. Here we demonstrate experimentally edge detection by using the spatial dispersion of dielectric metasurfaces in the spectral vicinity of the Mie-type resonances (Fig. 1b). We show that a single ultra-thin (hundreds of nanometers) silicon metasurface can result in edge detection without any additional optical components and post computational processing.

摘要: We propose ?lter banks in the graph spectral domain, where each ?lter is de?ned by a sum of sinusoidal waves. The main advantages of these ?lter banks are that (a) they have low approximation errors even if a lower-order shifted Chebyshev polynomial approximation is used, (b) the upper bound of the error after the pth order Chebyshev polynomial approximation can be calculated rigorously without complex calculations, and (c) their parameters can be ef?ciently obtained from any real-valued linear phase ?nite impulse response ?lter banks in regular signal processing. The proposed ?lter bank has the same ?lter characteristics as the corresponding classical ?lter bank in the frequency domain and inherits the original properties, such as tight frame and no DC leakage. Furthermore, their approximation orders can be determined from the desired approximation accuracy. The effectiveness of our approach is evaluated by comparing them with existing spectral graph wavelets and ?lter banks.

摘要: One of the main vulnerabilities of GNSS receivers jamming is their exposure to intentional or unintentional signals, which could even cause service unavailability. Several alternatives to counteract these effects were proposed in the literature, being the most promising those based on multiple antenna architectures. This is specially the case for high-grade receivers used in applications requiring reliability and robustness. This article provides an overview of the possible receiver architectures encompassing antenna arrays and the associated signal processing techniques. Emphasis is also put on the most typical implementation issues found when dealing with such technology. A thorough survey is complemented with a set of experiments, including real data processing by a working prototype, which exemplifies the above ideas.

摘要: Touch-based interactivity has become an important function in displays. This paper reports on the signal processing of touch signals in which touch interactivity is processed as an image, and correlated double sampling (CDS) algorithm is applied for both common-mode noise reduction and global multivalued offset cancellation. Based on experimental results, we achieved a boost in SNR of 7.6 dB. The processed signal reduces detection errors and power consumption of the system.

摘要: A synergetic approach for the estimation of stable boundary layer height (SBLH) using lidar and microwave radiometer (MWR) data is presented. Vertical variance of the backscatter signal from a ceilometer is used as an indicator of the aerosol stratification in the nocturnal stable boundary layer. This hypothesis is supported by a statistical analysis over one month of observations. Thermodynamic information from the MWR-derived potential temperature is incorporated as coarse estimate of the SBLH. Data from the two instruments are adaptively assimilated by using an extended Kalman filter (EKF). A first test of the algorithm is performed by applying it to collocated Vaisala CT25K ceilometer and humidity and temperature profiler MWR data collected during the HD(CP)2 Observational Prototype Experiment (HOPE) campaign at Jülich, Germany. The application of the algorithm to different atmospheric scenarios reveals the superior performance of the EKF compared to a nonlinear least squares estimator, particularly in nonidealized conditions.

摘要: In bistatic multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar, more number of detectable incident signals and a higher angle estimation performance can be obtained by using conjugate estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRITs) with the characteristic of noncircularity. The result is achieved under the assumption that all the received signals are noncircular. When the incident signals are the coexistence of noncircular and circular signals, the conjugate ESPRIT will not valuable. Therefore, this paper proposes a method of the joint of direction of departure (DOD) and direction of arrival (DOA) estimation, which is appropriate for the coexistence of noncircular and circular signals in bistatic MIMO radar. First, the received data model of the bistatic MIMO radar is given. Second, we modify the received signal model by the use of noncircularity characteristic. Third, we derive out the equation of spatially rotational invariant containing the DOD and DOA information. Last, we solve the equation to obtain the DOD and DOA by means of total least squares technology. The proposed algorithm has the three advantages. One is that it has better angle estimation accuracy than that of method which does not use the noncircularity characteristic. Another one is that it has more number of detectable incident signals. The last one is that the more number of noncircular signals, the higher angle estimation accuracy will be. Results from numerical experiments are used to show the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm.

Optical Fiber Applications || All Optical Signal Processing Technologies in Optical Fiber Communication
摘要: Due to continued growth of internet at starling rate and the introduction of new broadband services, such as cloud computing, IPTV and high-definition media streaming, there is a requirement for flexible bandwidth infrastructure that supports mobility of data at peta-scale. Elastic networking based on gridless spectrum technology is evolving as a favorable solution for the flexible optical networking supportive next generation traffic requirements. Recently, research is centered on a more elastic spectrum provision methodology than the traditional ITU-T grid. The main issue is the requirement for a transmission connect, capable of accommodating and handling a variety of signals with distinct modulation format, baud rate and spectral occupancy. Segmented use of the spectrum could lead to the shortage of availableness of sufficiently extensive spectrum spaces for high bitrate channels, resulting in wavelength contention. On-demand space assignment creates not only deviation from the ideal course but also have spectrum fragmentation, which reduces spectrum resource utilization. This chapter reviewed the recent research development of feasible solutions for the efficient transport of heterogeneous traffic by enhancing the flexibility of the optical layer for performing allocation of network resources as well as implementation of optical node by all optical signal processing in optical fiber communication.

摘要: With ongoing large-scale smart energy metering deployments worldwide, disaggregation of a household’s total energy consumption down to individual appliances using analytical tools, also known as non-intrusive appliance load monitoring (NALM), has generated increased research interest lately. NALM can deepen energy feedback, support appliance retrofit advice, and support home automation. However, despite the fact that NALM was proposed over 30 years ago, there are still many open challenges with respect to its practicality and effectiveness at low sampling rates. Indeed, the majority of NALM approaches, supervised or unsupervised, require training to build appliance models, and are sensitive to appliance changes in the house, thus requiring regular re-training. In this paper, we tackle this challenge by proposing an NALM approach that does not require any training. The main idea is to build upon the emerging field of graph signal processing to perform adaptive thresholding, signal clustering, and pattern matching. We determine the performance limits of our approach and demonstrate its usefulness in practice. Using two open access datasets—the US REDD data set with active power measurements downsampled to 1 min resolution and the UK REFIT data set with 8-s resolution, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for typical smart meter sampling rate, with the state-of-the-art supervised and unsupervised NALM approaches as benchmarks.
