    摘要: Over the past years, interest in wireless THz communications with so-called T-waves has tremendously increased [1]–[4], because the large carrier frequencies in the range 0.2 THz to 0.9 THz support wide signal bandwidths and consequently large data rates. Transmission over hundreds of meters and line rates exceeding 100 Gbit/s were demonstrated [5]–[10]. Typical atmospheric losses are 0.2 dB/100 m at 0.2 THz, 0.5 dB/100 m at 0.3 THz, 1.5 dB/100 m at 0.4 THz, and 5 dB/100 m at 0.9 THz. For transmission over a 100 m-distance, however, the unity-gain free-space propagation loss dominates. To combat this propagation loss, multiple directional antennas with a high gain per sector can be employed at the base station to boost the reach and the data throughput on transmission and reception.

    摘要: A Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)-enabled analog mobile fronthaul architecture is presented supporting enhanced flexibility by exploiting the fine filtering properties of a fully reconfigurable, silicon photonics-based filtering element. The use of Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC)-based elastic optical circuitries to support wavelength selectivity, reconfigurability and advanced signal processing at the optical edge is thoroughly discussed. Numerical studies are presented emphasizing on flexibility, low-energy consumption and the compatibility of our proposed PIC-based implementations with the analog Radio over Fiber (RoF)-based mobile transport schemes. Proof-of-concept analog photonic processing of 1 Gbaud Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK)- modulated radio through Intermediate Frequency over Fiber (IFoF) transmission experiments is successfully demonstrated.

  • A Novel Processing Methodology for Traffic-Speed Road Surveys Using Point Lasers

    摘要: The rapidly increasing traffic volumes using local road networks allied to the implications of climate change drive the demand for cost-effective, reliable and accurate road condition assessment. A particular concern for local road asset managers is the loss of material from the road surface known as fretting which unchecked can lead to potholes. In order to assess the road condition quantitatively and affordably, a system should be designed with low complexity, be capable of operating in a variety of weather conditions and operate at normal traffic-speeds. Many different techniques have been developed for road condition assessment such as ground penetrating radar, visual sensors and mobile scanning lasers. In this work, the use of the point laser technique for scanning the road surface is investigated. It has the advantages of being sufficiently accurate, is relatively unaffected by levels of illumination and it produces relatively low volumes of data. In this work, road fretting/surface disintegration was determined using a novel signal processing approach which considers a number of features of reflected laser signals. The proposed methodology was demonstrated using data collected from the UK’s local road network. The experimental results indicate that the proposed system can assess road fretting to an accuracy which is comparable to a visual inspection, and at Information Quality Level (IQL) 3 which is sufficient for tactical road asset management whereby road sections requiring treatment are selected and appropriate treatments identified.

    摘要: A monolithically integrated and widely frequency-tunable silicon photonic microwave photonic filter (MPF) is reported. All components including a grating coupler, a wideband phase modulator, a high Q factor ring resonator and wideband a photodetector (PD) are monolithically integrated on a silicon photonic chip. The passband functionality is implemented by translating the spectral response of the ring resonator to the microwave domain based on phase modulation to intensity modulation conversion. The frequency tunability is implemented by tuning the wavelength of the optical carrier injected into the chip. The proposed MPF is fabricated and its performance is experimentally evaluated. The 3-dB bandwidth is measured to be 2.7 GHz and the frequency-tunable range is 12 GHz.

  • Performance enhancement of high-capacity coherent DWDM free-space optical communication link using digital signal processing

    摘要: In this paper, 1.28 Tbps (32 × 40 Gbps) high-capacity DWDM-FSO link has been investigated for performance enhancement using coherent detection and digital signal processing (DSP). The DP-16QAM-modulated proposed DWDM-FSO link has been analyzed for both adverse weather and turbulent atmospheric conditions. It is observed that when link is subjected to strong turbulence along with adverse weather conditions, the DSP-aided coherent DWDM-FSO receiver achieves target bit error rate (BER) of 10?4 at signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 36.4 dB, while for similar conditions, the SNR requirements for IM/DD-based DWDM-FSO link shoots by 12.8 dB to 49.2 dB. Also, in terms of operational link range, the proposed link even under strong turbulent conditions serves 1.88 km, whereas IM/DD link was restricted to mere 1.12 km for target of BER of 10?4, thus producing a decent range increment of 760 m. The proposed link has been designed and investigated using OptiSystem? 14.2.

  • Fully Reconfigurable Waveguide Bragg Gratings for Programmable Photonic Signal Processing

    摘要: Fiber Bragg gratings have been invented for over three decades and have been intensively employed in optical communications systems and sensor systems. The key limitation of a fiber Bragg grating is that once fabricated, it is hard to be tuned or with very limited tunability via thermal or mechanical tuning. Recently, great efforts have been directed into the study of realizing Bragg gratings on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The key advantage of Bragg gratings implemented based on SOI is that the gratings can be fast and electrically reconfigured with the use of free-carrier plasma dispersion effect in silicon, which can be employed for fast programmable photonic signal processing. In this paper, Bragg gratings based on SOI that are electrically programmable will be reviewed, and their use for advanced programmable optical and microwave signal processing will be discussed.

  • Performance of grey-coded IQM-based optical modulation formats on high-speed long-haul optical communication link

    摘要: In this article the performance of grey-coded advanced optical modulation formats is evaluated on a single-channel high-speed long-haul optical communication link and are compared to the respective differential-coded modulation formats. Polarisation division multiplexed optical in-phase quadrature modulator (IQM) structure and homodyne detection scheme are used to realise 100 Gbps quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK), 120 Gbps 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM), 360 Gbps 32-QAM and 480 Gbps 64-QAM modulation formats. Advanced digital signal processing unit with various pre-processing and recovery stages such as direct current blocking, normalisation, low-pass Bessel filter, resampling, quadrature imbalance compensation, chromatic dispersion compensation, non-linear compensation, timing recovery, adaptive equalisation, down-sampling, frequency offset estimation, and carrier phase estimation is used at the receiving end to compensate for signal impairments during propagation. Maximum transmission distances of 7200, 1050, 560, and 360 km have been achieved at an acceptable bit error rate for QPSK, 16-QAM, 32-QAM, and 64-QAM, respectively. The grey-coded systems outperformed the differential-coded systems regarding optical signal-to-noise ratio requirement, receiver sensitivity, and transmission distance.

    摘要: A major drawback of frequency modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar systems is the permanent leakage from the transmit into the receive path. Besides leakage within the radar device itself, signal reflections from a fixed object in front of the antennas additionally introduce so-called short-range (SR) leakage. It causes a strong degradation of detection sensitivity due to the unavoidable phase noise of the transmit oscillator. In this work, we introduce an artificial on-chip target (OCT) to mitigate the SR leakage. The OCT consists of a delay line whose time delay is significantly smaller than the round-trip delay time of the SR leakage. This is motivated by the fact that in integrated circuits for automotive radar applications operating at 77 GHz delay lines in the range of only a few picoseconds can be realized with a reasonable amount of circuitry. Despite this constraint, we show that the proposed method achieves almost perfect cancelation of the SR leakage. The concept is based on the cross-correlation properties of the residual phase noise in the intermediate frequency (IF) domain. Further, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified in an FMCW radar system simulation. It almost perfectly shows that a gain in sensitivity of approximately 6 dB is achieved, compensating for the performance degradation caused by the SR leakage. The novel leakage cancelation concept is carried out mainly in the digital domain enabling high flexibility and adaptivity.
