Cellulose paper support with dual-layered nanoa??microstructures for enhanced plasmonic photothermal heating and solar vapor generation
摘要: Plasmonic nanoparticles, such as gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), have been actively applied in solar vapor generation for seawater desalination and water purification, owing to their photothermal heating performances. Such nanoparticles have been frequently anchored within porous supporting materials to ensure easy handling and water absorption. However, there has been limited progress in improving the transport efficiency of light to nanoparticles within porous supports to achieve more effective photothermal heating. Here, we show an enhanced light absorption of AuNPs by supporting on a cellulose paper with tailored porous structures for efficient photothermal heating. The paper consists of AuNP-anchored cellulose nanofibers and cellulose pulp as the top and bottom layers, respectively, which provides dual-layered porous nano-microstructures in the perpendicular direction. Then, the bottom layer with pulp-derived microstructures reflects the transmitted light back to AuNPs within the top layer, which improves their light absorptivity. Thus, under 1 sun illumination, the dual-layered paper demonstrates superior performance in photothermal heating (increases from 28 °C to 46 °C) and solar vapor generation (1.72 kg m?2 h?1) compared with the single-layered AuNP-anchored cellulose nanofiber paper even at the same AuNP content. Furthermore, the water evaporation rate per AuNP content of the dual-layered paper is more than 2 times higher than those of the state-of-the-art AuNP-anchored porous materials under the same light irradiation. This strategy enables the efficient use of precious plasmonic nanoparticles for further development of solar vapor generation.

High-performance solar vapor generation of Ni/carbon nanomaterials by controlled carbonization of waste polypropylene; ??ˉ??§?¢3????o????è???????ˉ????¤?é??/?¢3?o3?±3????????¨?o?é????????è???°?è????¢;
摘要: Solar vapor generation is emerging as a promising technology using solar energy for various applications including desalination and freshwater production. However, from the viewpoints of industrial and academic research, it remains challenging to prepare low-cost and high-efficiency photothermal materials. In this work, we report the controlled carbonization of polypropylene (PP) using NiO and poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) as combined catalysts to prepare a Ni/carbon nanomaterial (Ni/CNM). The morphology and textural property of Ni/CNM are modulated by adding a trace amount of PIL. Ni/CNM consists of cup-stacked carbon nanotubes (CS-CNTs) and pear-shaped metallic Ni nanoparticles. Due to the synergistic effect of Ni and CS-CNTs in solar absorption, Ni/CNM possesses an excellent property of photothermal conversion. Meanwhile, Ni/CNM with a high specific surface area and rich micro-/meso-/macropores constructs a three-dimensional (3D) porous network for efficient water supply and vapor channels. Thanks to high solar absorption, fast water transport, and low thermal conductivity, Ni/CNM exhibits a high water evaporation rate of 1.67 kg m?2 h?1, a solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency of 94.9%, and an excellent stability for 10 cycles. It also works well when converting dye-containing water, seawater, and oil/water emulsion into healthy drinkable water. The metallic ion removal efficiency of seawater is 99.99%, and the dye removal efficiency is >99.9%. More importantly, it prevails over the-state-of-art carbon-based photothermal materials in solar energy-driven vapor generation. This work not only proposes a new sustainable approach to convert waste polymers into advanced metal/carbon hybrids, but also contributes to the fields of solar energy utilization and seawater desalination.

Carbonized Bamboos as Excellent 3D Solar Vapor‐Generation Devices
摘要: Given the global challenges of water scarcity, solar-driven vapor generation has become a renewed topic as an energy-efficient way for clean water production. Here, it is revealed that bamboo, as a natural hierarchical cellular material, can be an excellent 3D solar vapor-generation device by a simple carbonization progress. A floating carbonized bamboo sample evaporates water with an extremely high vapor-generation rate of 3.13 kg m?2 h?1 under 1 sun illumination. The high evaporation rate is achieved by the unique natural structure of bamboos. The inner wall of bamboo recovers the diffuse light energy and the thermal radiation heat loss from the 3D bamboo bottom, and the outer wall captures energy from the warmer environment. The high evaporation rate is also attributed to reduced vaporization enthalpy of water confined in the bamboo mesh. Such bamboo-based high-performance, low-cost, self-cleaning, solid durable, and scalable 3D vapor-generation device has attractive applications in desalination as well as industrial and domestic wastewater abatement.
