  • Squaraine dyes: interaction with bovine serum albumin to investigate supramolecular adducts with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties

摘要: Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA)–squaraine supramolecular adducts with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties were prepared and characterized by spectroscopic methods. While squaraine dyes showed very low fluorescence quantum yield in water, a great enhancement in the fluorescence of the aggregated BSA adducts was achieved due to the abnormal aggregation-induced emission properties of squaraines. The adducts formation was studied from a kinetic point of view showing unexpected structure-properties relationships.

  • Novel A2-D-A1-D-A2 type NIR absorbing symmetrical squaraines based on 2, 3, 3, 8-tetramethyl-3H-pyrrolo [3, 2-h] quinoline: Synthesis, photophysical, electrochemical, thermal properties and photostability study

摘要: Two novel acceptor–donor-acceptor-donor-acceptor type pi-conjugated symmetrical squaraine dyes, denoted by PQSQ 1 and PQSQ 2 based on 2, 3, 3, 8-tetramethyl -3H-pyrrolo [3,2-h] quinoline were successfully synthesized for the first time to arrive absorption and emission at NIR region. These dyes comprise indolenines as electron donor units, squaryl ring as a central electron acceptor and pyridines as terminal electron acceptor units. The relationship between molecular structures and photophysical properties of these dyes was studied in comparison with their parent compounds (ISQ and N-Et ISQ). These novel squaraine dyes displayed an intense absorption within the range 671 to 692 nm in polar to non- polar solvents respectively with good molar extinction coefficients (? 105 Lmol-1cm-1). Compared to their parent squaraines, both dyes showed red-shifted absorption (33 - 44 nm) as well as emission (38 - 59 nm) due to the electron-accepting ability of the ancillary pyridine acceptors and extended pi-conjugation. These dyes exhibited negative solvatochromism and Reichardt's ET (30) scale was applied to propose a quantitative relationship of the relative stability of ground and excited-state of these squaraines with solvent polarity. The electrochemical and computational properties of these symmetrical squaraines were investigated with the help of cyclic voltammetry and density functional theory (DFT). Moreover, PQSQ 1-2 exhibited high thermal and photo-stability. These A2-D-A1-D-A2 type dyes showed improved photostabilities compared to their parent D-A-D type dyes.

  • Alkyl Group Wrapped Unsymmetrical Squaraine Dyes for Dye-sensitized Solar Cells: Branched Alkyl Chains Modulate the Aggregation of Dyes and Charge Recombination Processes

摘要: Electron transfer processes at the interfaces dictate the factors to improve the photovoltaic parameters such as open-circuit voltage (Voc) and short-circuit current (Jsc) of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) device besides selecting a set of suitable anode, dye, electrolyte and cathode materials. Inefficient charge injection process at dye-TiO2 interface and charge recombination at the TiO2-dye/electrolyte interface have detrimental effects in improving both Jsc and Voc. Hence tailoring the factors that governs to improve the Jsc and Voc will be an ideal approach to get the desired sensitizers with good device efficiencies. Squaraines are far-red active zwitterionic dyes, has high molar extinction coefficient along with unique aggregation properties due to the larger dipole moment associated with it. Here we report a series of unsymmetrical squaraine dyes, SQS1 to SQS6, with systematic variation of alkyl groups at sp3-C and N-atoms of indoline unit that was away from the anchoring group to control the dye-dye interactions on the TiO2 surface. The branched alkyl groups help to modulate the self-assembly of sensitizers on the TiO2 surface besides passivating the surface that helps to avoid the charge recombination processes. Light harvesting efficiency (LHE) and cyclic voltammetry studies of dye-sensitized TiO2 electrode indicated that the aggregation and charge hopping process between the dye molecules can be modulated, respectively by systematically increasing the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl groups. Such variation in the branched alkyl group helps to enhance the Voc from 672 (SQS1) to 718 mV (SQS6), Jsc from 7.95 (SQS1) to 12.22 mA/cm2 (SQS6), with the device efficiency ranging from 3.82% to 6.23% without any coadsorbent. Dye SQS4 has achieved highest efficiency of 7.1% (Voc = 715 mV, Jsc = 13.05 mA/cm2) with coadsorbent chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) using iodine (I-/I3 -) electrolyte compared to its analogs. Analysis of IPCE profile indicates that the major contribution of photocurrent generation is from the aggregated squaraine dyes on TiO2.

  • Photoluminescence of Squaraine Thin Films: Spatial Homogeneity and Temperature Dependence

摘要: Temperature-dependent and spatially resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy is employed to probe the optical properties of spin-cast squaraine thin films annealed to different temperatures. SQIB, a squaraine derivative with donor-acceptor-donor configuration, crystallizes in monoclinic and orthorhombic structures at low and high temperatures, respectively. The former is characterized by an optical response typical for H-aggregates, while the latter shows J-type behavior. In temperature-dependent PL spectra, the two polymorphs are identified via their specific vibrational signature. Spatially resolved data taken with 5 μm resolution give insight into the homogeneity of the SQIB films. The high-temperature films are made of uniform J-type crystallites of 50–100 μm size, as also seen in polarization-dependent data. The low-temperature films comprise a mixture of grains with H- and J-character. Their specific spectral fingerprints superimpose to the overall emission response detected in the global PL spectra. The study demonstrates that the optical properties of SQIB thin films can be probed at the level of individual grains and systematically modified by thermal treatment.
