  • A Visible Light-Near-Infrared Dual-Band Smart Window with Internal Energy Storage

    摘要: The integration of electrochromic smart windows with energy storage is an appealing concept for green building development. Herein, we report a dual-band electrochromic energy storage (DEES) window capable of independent control of visible light (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR, solar heat) transmittance with a high internal charge storage. The key design feature is the use of composition-optimized Ta-doped nano-TiO2 nanocrystals as a multifunctional active material to deliver a high charge-storage capability concurrently with high bistability and long-cycle-life electrochromism in three distinct operating modes: (1) the VIS and NIR transparent "bright" mode; (2) the VIS transparent and NIR opaque "cool" mode; and (3) the completely opaque "dark" mode. The independent control of VIS (sunlight) and NIR (solar heat) modulation was successfully demonstrated in a DEES prototype with a high charge-storage capacity of 466.5 mA hr m?2 at 150 mA m?2 of current density.

    摘要: This paper focuses on the optimal siting of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in a Distribution Network with installed Photovoltaic Generation, in order to minimize the energy losses of the system. The bus voltage limit, as well as the ampacity level of the lines are taken into consideration as constraints, while the technical constraints of the BESSs have also been taken into account. Unified Particle Swarm Optimization is used as the solving optimization technique. Simulations are being carried out on IEEE-33 bus system regarding different scenarios and the results are presented and compared. A significant improvement in energy losses, voltage and line ampacity profile is achieved by the introduction of BESS units in a Distribution Network with high PV Penetration.

  • Lead-free Ag <sub/> 1-3 <i>x</i> </sub> La <sub/><i>x</i> </sub> NbO <sub/>3</sub> Antiferroelectric Ceramics with High Energy Storage Density and Efficiency

    摘要: Environmentally benign lead-free bulk ceramics with high recoverable energy density (Wrec) are very attractive in advanced pulsed power capacitors. In this work, composition engineering was adopted by La3+ modification to improve the energy storage performance of Ag1-3xLaxNbO3 ceramics. It was found the antiferroelectric (AFE) phase was stabilized after La3+ substitution, as a result of the reduced tolerance factor t. Significant improvement of Wrec and energy storage efficiency (η) were achieved with value of 3.12 J/cm3 and 0.63 for x=0.02 at an electric field of 230 kV/cm, more than 1.5 times the value of pure AgNbO3 (Wrec=1.9 J/cm3, η=0.40). The excellent energy storage properties are resulted from the increased antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition electric field (EF), ferroelectric-antiferroelectric phase transition electric field (EA) and breakdown electric field (Eb). The enhanced Eb was ascribed to the decreased grain size and increased electrical resistivity upon La3+ modification. The feature makes Ag1-3xLaxNbO3 a potential candidate for energy storage applications.

    摘要: This paper proposes a dual-input LLC resonant converter that interfaces with one PV panel and one battery energy storage system (BESS). The topology is a dual half-bridge LLC circuit with four active switches. This topology allows the two sources to share the same resonant tank for transferring energy to the load without the need for additional circuit components. A phase-shift pulse width modulation (PWM) control is employed to implement maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for PV panel and duty cycle is controlled to regulate battery current. The converter voltage gain is controlled by varying the operating frequency as in a typical LLC resonant converter. Zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) is realized in all switches over the entire range of source voltage and load conditions. In addition, voltage stress across switches does not exceed the input voltage. A simulation study was carried out to validate the operating principles of the proposed topology. The input voltage range of the PV source was selected to be 25 V to 50 V and the nominal input voltage of battery was 60 V with an output voltage regulated at 200 V DC.

    摘要: This study deals with a solar photovoltaic (PV) and pico-hydro based microgrid having a battery energy storage (BES), which transfers uninterruptable power across voltage source converter (VSC) at the common coupling point (CCP). Only one VSC in this system, has the competency to eradicate the power quality problems, compensation of harmonics current, regulation of frequency and voltage under varying loads. A battery energy storage (BES), which is coupled directly to the DC bus, manages the power flow under the changes in loading and variable power generation. A synchronous reluctance generator (SYRG) for pico-hydro generation is used because of its reliability, and cost-effectiveness than other such as permanent magnet brushless generators synchronous generator. The SRFT (Synchronous Reference Frame Theory) control is used to control the system frequency and voltage at PCC. The proposed system uses an INC (Incremental Conductance) technique for extraction of maximum power from a PV array. The smooth performance of the microgrid under various operating conditions, is demonstrated through experimental results, which meet power quality requirement of the IEEE 519 standard.

    摘要: This paper presents a comparison study for various types of battery technologies using selected BESS parameters in a hybrid PV and wind power plant taking the aging of the batteries into account. The optimization problem was reformulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem, with the aim being to minimize the overall operating cost. IBM CPLEX was used to solve the problem. For forecasting, two techniques, i.e., the persistence and Elman Neural Network, were applied for both day-ahead and hour-ahead forecasting. Moreover, four case studies were performed, including the scenario without battery, day-ahead dispatch, day-ahead dispatch with a rolling horizon and hour-ahead dispatch. The simulation results showed that hour-ahead dispatch demonstrated the highest profitability. Furthermore, among different battery technologies, lithium-ion batteries resulted in the highest operating profits, whereas lead-acid batteries had the shortest payback period and vanadium redox flow batteries demonstrated the least degradation from cycling.

    摘要: Proper design of an energy storage system can effectively and economically smooth out the PV power fluctuation and improve the power quality. A frequency analysis based hybrid energy storage devices (ESDs) selection method as well as typical PV data selection method are proposed to determine an optimum energy storage combination to meet the requirement of a power grid. A Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method is applied to analyze PV output power fluctuations. FFT is also applied to determine the most representative PV output data for the design cycle. The proposed algorithm divided the entire PV output power frequency spectrum into low and high ranges. The divisions are based on the characteristics of individual ESD’s as well as their cycle life and capacity loss. Through the proposed method, the lowest-cost ESD solution can be determined to meet the requirements to smooth out PV output fluctuation under the most representative weather pattern.

    摘要: The variable nature of renewable energy sources, coupled with unpredictable changes in load, requires the simultaneous implementation of high power and high energy density storage systems. This work addresses dynamic modeling, a PV/Batteries/Ultra capacitor hybrid energy system connected to a DC load in a remote house located around the town of Rouyn Noranda (Quebec-Canada) during one day in winter period. The P&O MPPT control is used to extract the maximum power of a photovoltaic generator which is considered as the main energy source of the hybrid system. In this paper, batteries and ultra-capacitors (UC) are serving as an energy storage system (ESS) and a main source in winter period. The UC are used for facing high frequency variations of the load, such as in transient state, while the batteries are in charge of slow load/source variations. Classical control of battery current and ultra-capacitor current allows choosing the suitable storage element in order to face correctly the production/consummation variations. Classical PI control strategy is proposed in manner to stabilize the DC bus voltage by controlling the attached DC/DC bidirectional converters. Simulations during 00 AM to 3 PM (during a snowy day) are carried out using Matlab/Simulink which confirm the good performances of the hybrid system and associated control systems.

    摘要: Remote communities are largely supplied by diesel generating plants. With weak grid and sparse communities over a large geographical area, photovoltaic distributed generation (PVDG) with battery energy storage systems (BESS) can be a viable alternative to grid upgrade while reducing dependence on fossil fuel based generation. This paper presents results of a research study for improving the hosting capacity of distribution systems in remote communities in the northwestern part of Canada. The proposed iterative approach seeks to exploit untapped potential of existing grid infrastructure along with the four-quadrant operation of BESS to maximize the feeder's hosting capacity. The proposed approach uses the headroom of overvoltage limit made available by several voltage regulators in the remote feeder to increase its hosting capacity by as much as 25%. Based on simulations with annual load profiles and site-specific PV generation profiles, it is shown that BESS can further improve the feeder hosting capacity by up to 60% with reactive power support. A comparison is also drawn between the options of grid-upgrade versus the use of BESS for improving hosting capacity. Three BESS technologies are compared with their cost metric for this application.

  • Application to Artificial Skin of Double Cone Tube Made of Acrylic Resin Formed by Micro Stereolithography

    摘要: A functional double cone tube (DCT) array with gas trapping and high durability is developed in the application of artificial skin. A stereo-lithography system is employed to fabricate DCT made of acrylic resin. In an aqueous solution, a certain amount of gas can be trapped in the tube due to capillary force balance. Under applying an external load, internal stress is effectively released at the interface between top and base cones. In the tactile sensing investigation, softness and tackiness senses as an artificial skin are felt.
