    摘要: Given the importance and necessity of integration of Modern and Contemporary Physics in High School curriculum, this article shows how to make an alternative plasma globe with easily acquired materials, that can be easily reproduced by teachers and students. The apparatus has the potential to support discussions guided by structuring themes proposed in Brazilian official documents, in a contextualized way, which shows the relationship between the phenomenon, the natural world and technological applications present in the daily lives of students.

  • Computer-Assisted Diagnosis for Diabetic Retinopathy Based on Fundus Images Using Deep Convolutional Neural Network

    摘要: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a complication of long-standing diabetes, which is hard to detect in its early stage because it only shows a few symptoms. Nowadays, the diagnosis of DR usually requires taking digital fundus images, as well as images using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Since OCT equipment is very expensive, it will benefit both the patients and the ophthalmologists if an accurate diagnosis can be made, based solely on reading digital fundus images. In the paper, we present a novel algorithm based on deep convolutional neural network (DCNN). Unlike the traditional DCNN approach, we replace the commonly used max-pooling layers with fractional max-pooling. Two of these DCNNs with a different number of layers are trained to derive more discriminative features for classification. After combining features from metadata of the image and DCNNs, we train a support vector machine (SVM) classifier to learn the underlying boundary of distributions of each class. For the experiments, we used the publicly available DR detection database provided by Kaggle. We used 34,124 training images and 1,000 validation images to build our model and tested with 53,572 testing images. The proposed DR classifier classifies the stages of DR into five categories, labeled with an integer ranging between zero and four. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve a recognition rate up to 86.17%, which is higher than previously reported in the literature. In addition to designing a machine learning algorithm, we also develop an app called 'Deep Retina.' Equipped with a handheld ophthalmoscope, the average person can take fundus images by themselves and obtain an immediate result, calculated by our algorithm. It is beneficial for home care, remote medical care, and self-examination.

  • Technical notes Instructive head-mounted display system: pointing device using a?vision-based finger tracking technique applied to surgical education

    摘要: Introduction: The head-mounted display (HMD) system is a novel personalized imaging monitoring system for use in a medical setting. Aim: To support interactive intraoperative communication among HMD wearers, we integrated vision-based finger tracking into our system as a pointing device. Material and methods: Our vision-based finger tracking system is composed of a commercially available real-time video camera, which is mounted on the modern HMD, and computer software that enables tracking of the tip of the operator’s index finger and superimposing the marker on the endoscopic view. Results: We used this system in an experimental demonstration. The operator used the finger-tracking pointer to explain the intraoperative findings of transurethral resection for bladder cancer to medical students. Conclusions: This finger tracking system-based pointing device can function as a supportive tool for the HMD system, enabling interactive instruction and communication between the operator and other attending physicians or medical students.

  • A new chaotic teaching learning based optimization for frequency reconfigurable antennas design

    摘要: In this paper, a new chaotic teaching learning based optimization (CTLBO) is proposed. TLBO is a rather newly proposed population-based algorithm. This algorithm has no control parameters for the tuning and has a simple structure. We improve its performance by chaotic maps. First, the presented CTLBO is tested on nine unimodal/multimodal benchmark functions. Then, chaotic sequences are applied as vectors with different initial values for design of a frequency recon?gurable antenna (FRA) as a practical example. Comparisons of the performance of this algorithm with those of the basic TLBO, genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization show the ability of this algorithm in design of FRAs in terms of faster convergence and better performance. A prototype of the optimized antenna with CTLBO algorithm is fabricated and the simulation and measurement results agree suitably.

  • Insertion of Photovoltaic Solar Systems in Technological Education Institutions in Brazil: Teacher Perceptions Concerning Contributions towards Sustainable Development

    摘要: Teaching spaces are seen as institutions presenting relevant power to promote sustainability. Thus, in addition to knowledge (re)producers, they must also assume ethical obligations to incorporate daily sustainability-oriented actions. In this context, this study evaluates faculty perceptions regarding contributions to the teaching–learning process and the di?usion of a pedagogical practice adhering to sustainability assumptions, arising from the insertion of photovoltaic solar systems in educational institutions. A study was conducted at the Rio Grande do Norte Federal Institute of Education Science and Technology, with 2.2 photovoltaic MWp distributed throughout its 21 campuses. This study investigated teacher knowledge and attitudes towards renewable energy sources in their school practice, as a way of understanding these issues and presenting propositions that will strengthen their role in daily school life. Teachers are aware of the importance of these sources, but their knowledge does not form links with their practice. Thus, the necessary connections to promote sustainability from the existence of institutional photovoltaic systems were proven insu?cient. They did not support the concept, nor the adoption of pedagogical practices linked to this technology. In addition, teacher inability to bring knowledge related to renewable energies to the classroom and link them to daily student lives was also noted. The adoption of renewable energy to promote a sustainability culture demands the formation of teacher knowledge and attitudes, and this training must follow a continuous path.

    摘要: Care issues and costs associated with an increasing elderly population are becoming a major concern for many countries. The use of assistive robots in “smart-home” environments has been suggested as a possible partial solution to these concerns. A challenge is the personalization of the robot to meet the changing needs of the elderly person over time. One approach is to allow the elderly person, or their carers or relatives, to make the robot learn activities in the smart home and teach it to carry out behaviors in response to these activities. The overriding premise being that such teaching is both intuitive and “nontechnical.” To evaluate these issues, a commercially available autonomous robot has been deployed in a fully sensorized but otherwise ordinary suburban house. We describe the design approach to the teaching, learning, robot, and smart home systems as an integrated unit and present results from an evaluation of the teaching component with 20 participants and a preliminary evaluation of the learning component with three participants in a human–robot interaction experiment. Participants reported ?ndings using a system usability scale and ad-hoc Likert questionnaires. Results indicated that participants thought that this approach to robot personalization was easy to use, useful, and that they would be capable of using it in real-life situations both for themselves and for others.

  • Effect of laser surface treatment on surface and bonding properties of carbon fiber reinforced composites

    摘要: Background: Many nursing programs include a capstone project as part of the nursing curriculum. In Taiwan, these courses involve development of healthcare products. A student's success can depend on faculty's ability to employ creative teaching behaviors. Purpose: To examine the relationship between demographic and teaching characteristics, personality traits, and self-perceived levels of creative teaching behaviors for capstone nursing faculty. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational study design. Faculty (N = 53) were recruited from healthcare schools in Taiwan. Data from self-report questionnaires included variables for demographic and teaching characteristics, perceived levels of creative personality traits (imagination, curiosity, adventure, challenge) and creative teaching behaviors (autonomous learning, creative thinking, characteristics/motivations, environment/opportunity). Hierarchical multiple regression identi?ed predictors of creative teaching behaviors. Results: Mean total scores for creative teaching behaviors were high for nursing faculty; characteristics/motivations were the lowest subscale score. The creative personality trait of curiosity signi?cantly and positively in?uenced the perception of high levels creative teaching behaviors. Conclusions: High scores for curiosity signi?cantly predicted high scores for creative teaching behaviors for nursing faculty. These ?ndings suggest faculty who perceive themselves as having low levels of creative teaching behaviors might bene?t from training to increase levels of curiosity.

  • Incorporating Virtual Reality into the Teaching and Training of Grid-Tie Photovoltaic Power Plants Design

    摘要: The current dif?culty in obtaining ?nancial resources to acquire equipment for training personnel and the requirement of well-trained engineers in the industry looking toward sustainability, creates an opportunity to innovate in teaching tools, such as the proposed in this article, where a virtual world is projected, integrating the planning and design of a photovoltaic power plant (PV). The user can interact while immersed in the virtual scene as if the PV system were already installed, illustrating technical characteristics of selected equipment and its installation details, while the user is interacting with didactic activities focused on visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning. This paper summarizes an initiative within the teaching–learning context, which aims to show the advantages of using modern tools, such as virtual reality, to achieve teaching goals in a renewable energy course.

  • Remote-laser welding system with in-line adaptive 3D seam tracking and power control

    摘要: Remote-laser welding shortens processing times but bring reservations in the field of small series and user-customized manufacturing, where product individualization requires flexible and adaptive systems with simplified clamping devices. Also, the workpiece geometry is not exact due to thermal deformations during welding. To solve this, we have developed an innovative system, which enables in-line adaptive 3d seam tracking and laser power control. The system consists of an industrial robot, scanning head with optical triangulation feedback and fiber laser. It enables shorter and easier welding trajectory teaching, laser focus positioning precision of under 0,06 mm and stable partial penetration welding process.

  • Finely Controlled Circularly Polarized Luminescence of a Mechano‐Responsive Supramolecular Polymer

    摘要: By drawing on data from two studies, we describe how a strategic partnership between student affairs professionals and faculty researchers supported the expansion of a K-12 engagement-focused teaching and learning model to one that could support undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learners. The model was successfully implemented at the undergraduate level in both formal and informal STEM learning settings. We conclude by offering a Student Engagement Index as a tool that can support higher education professionals to engage HBCU students in both formal and informal STEM learning spaces.
