  • Subjective and objective evaluation of visual fatigue caused by continuous and discontinuous use of HMDs

    摘要: During continuous use of displays, a short rest can relax users' eyes and relieve visual fatigue. As one of the most important devices of virtual reality, head‐mounted displays (HMDs) can create an immersive 3D virtual world. When users have a short rest during the using of HMDs, they will experience a transition from virtual world to real world. In order to investigate how this change affects users' eye condition, we designed a 2 × 2 experiment to explore the effects of short rest during continuous using of HMDs and compared the results with those of 2D displays. The Visual Fatigue Scale, critical flicker frequency, visual acuity, pupillary diameter, and accommodation response of 80 participants were measured to assess the subject's performance. The experimental results indicated that a short rest during the using of 2D displays could significantly reduce users' visual fatigue. However, the experimental results of using HMDs showed that short rest during continuous using of HMD induced more severe symptoms of subjectively visual discomfort, but reduced the objectively visual fatigue.

  • A study on differences in human perception between a real and an AR scene viewed in an OST-HMD

    摘要: With the recent growth in the development of augmented reality (AR) technologies, it is becoming important to study human perception of AR scenes. In order to detect whether users will suffer more from visual and operator fatigue when watching virtual objects through optical see-through head-mounted displays (OST-HMDs), compared with watching real objects in the real world, we propose a comparative experiment including a virtual magic cube task and a real magic cube task. The scores of the subjective questionnaires (SQ) and the values of the critical flicker frequency (CFF) were obtained from 18 participants. In our study, we use several electrooculogram (EOG) and heart rate variability (HRV) measures as objective indicators of visual and operator fatigue. Statistical analyses were performed to deal with the subjective and objective indicators in the two tasks. Our results suggest that participants were very likely to suffer more from visual and operator fatigue when watching virtual objects presented by the OST-HMD. In addition, the present study provides hints that HRV and EOG measures could be used to explore how visual and operator fatigue are induced by AR content. Finally, three novel HRV measures are proposed to be used as potential indicators of operator fatigue.

    摘要: The visual fatigue caused by long-term work under steady light generated by fluorescent luminaires and fluctuated light generated by LED luminaires with different modulation depth was investigated through subjective reports of symptoms and physiological signals. Both the subjective feelings and the physiological results show that visual fatigue becomes more serious with increasing time under all the test lighting conditions. Compared to fluorescent luminaires, the LED luminaires with full-modulated light produced significantly severer symptoms. However, the LEDs with 75% modulation depth was fully accepted.

  • Objective Evaluation of Visual Fatigue Using Binocular Fusion Maintenance

    摘要: Purpose: In this study, we investigated whether an individual’s visual fatigue can be evaluated objectively and quantitatively from their ability to maintain binocular fusion. Methods: Binocular fusion maintenance (BFM) was measured using a custom-made binocular open-view Shack–Hartmann wavefront aberrometer equipped with liquid crystal shutters, wherein eye movements and wavefront aberrations were measured simultaneously. Transmittance in the liquid crystal shutter in front of the subject’s nondominant eye was reduced linearly, and BFM was determined from the transmittance at the point when binocular fusion was broken and vergence eye movement was induced. In total, 40 healthy subjects underwent the BFM test and completed a questionnaire regarding subjective symptoms before and after a visual task lasting 30 minutes. Results: BFM was significantly reduced after the visual task (P , 0.001) and was negatively correlated with the total subjective eye symptom score (adjusted R2 ? 0.752, P , 0.001). Furthermore, the diagnostic accuracy for visual fatigue was significantly higher in BFM than in the conventional test results (aggregated fusional vergence range, near point of convergence, and the high-frequency component of accommodative microfluctuations; P ? 0.007). Conclusions: These results suggest that BFM can be used as an indicator for evaluating visual fatigue. Translational Relevance: BFM can be used to evaluate the visual fatigue caused by the new visual devices, such as head-mount display, objectively.

  • 7.4: Visual Fatigue during Viewing High-Dynamic Range Display

    摘要: The visual fatigue caused by one hour’s viewing of High-Dynamic Range (HDR) and Standard-Dynamic Range (SDR) display has been through subjective reports, ophthalmological parameters and physiological signals. The results show that visual fatigue becomes more serious with increasing time under the two modes. Compared to SDR display, one hour of viewing HDR display produces significantly greater tired eyes symptom and low frequency power (LF) of heart rate variability.
