摘要: Preliminary results on an electromagnetic wave propagation experiment at E and D band are presented. The research activity is collaboration between Politecnico di Milano and the Huawei European Microwave Centre in Milan, which has recently installed short (325 m) terrestrial links operating at 73, 83, 148 and 156 GHz and connecting two buildings in the university main campus. Received power data are processed to identify and isolate rain events and quantify the fade induced by precipitation, AR. Moreover, AR is estimated taking advantage of ancillary data collected by a laser-based disdrometer collocated with the link transceivers. Preliminary results definitely point out the higher prediction accuracy achieved by exploiting the information on the rain drop size provided by the disdrometer.

摘要: Exploitation of the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band for both the small-cell radio access (RAN) and in-street backhauling must contribute to strongly increase the capacity of next-generation outdoor wireless networks. Beside the numerous technological challenges faced by the equipment manufacturers, the definition of practical deployment requirements and elaboration of efficient network design procedures are key issues for future network providers and the refinement of business models. The work reported in the present paper is part of research activity on small-cell and wireless backhaul design methodologies. The authors analyze how digital geographical data and radio propagation models may be enhanced and tailored to answer new mmWave simulation requirements. Three different propagation methods are compared in an urban 60 GHz scenario: based on free building database, traditional high-resolution map data, or Lidar point cloud. The advantage of the multi-paths prediction versus direct-path is also investigated, using the Lidar point cloud as a simulation input.

摘要: This paper presents long term scintillation measurements on 20 GHz satellite links at 3 coastal locations in the Norwegian Arctic and compares the results with existing prediction methods. The elevation angles of the three links are 6.6, 10, and 14o respectively. The scintillation levels are highest during the summer months and show large monthly variations at two coastal locations, while the variations are reduced for the island location. The measured scintillation amplitudes are lower than predicted by the ITU-R method. A much modification of the existing methods is proposed, based on the results, giving significantly better annual predictions for the 3 locations in question. Monthly predictions are also improved, if slightly conservative.

RADIATION FIELD AND OPTICAL COUPLING EVALUATION USING A NEW MATHEMATICAL MODEL
摘要: The mathematical model elaborated in this paper is based on the concept of intrinsic modes in order to analyze and synthesize optical wave propagation along a non-uniform optical structure which is used in integrated optics communication as tapered optical coupler. The new mathematical model is simply developed by introducing modi?cations to the intrinsic integral, and its numerical evaluation illustrates the electromagnetic ?eld distribution inside a taper thin ?lm and also outside the waveguide constituted by the substrate and the cladding of lower refractive index. The proposed method permits e?ciently tracking the behaviour of the optical waves both inside and outside the optical waveguide, and quantifying the radiation and optical coupling occurring from the taper thin ?lm of higher refractive index to adjacent mediums until a total energy transfer; this happens at thicknesses lower than waveguide cuto? thickness of each mode. The new model can be applied to all types of tapered optical coupler, made from di?erent optical materials and having di?erent wedge angles.

摘要: Attenuation of electromagnetic waves in microwave bands is determined experimentally via measurement of received signal variations on terrestrial radio links operating in three frequency bands around 58, 94 and 122 GHz. The measured time series of attenuation are processed to obtain long-term cumulative distributions of attenuation due to hydrometeors. The obtained empirical distributions are compared with the ones predicted using the model of the Recommendation ITU-R P.530. For a given time percentages, the predicted attenuation levels exceeded are apparently lower than the levels of empirical distributions. A power-law relationship between attenuation and rain intensity is obtained by a least square approximation of measured simultaneous rain intensity and rain attenuation. The results are discussed and compared with the numerical predictions.
