  • Measurements of Beamswitching Gains and Fade Dynamics for 28 GHz Indoor Static Links in the Presence of Pedestrian Traffic

    摘要: We measured channel dynamics for fixed wireless indoor channels at 28 GHz. We characterize pedestrian-induced fades in open indoor spaces and the effectiveness of beamswitching to mitigate them. We find that fades of the dominant propagation path may be as deep as 9 dB at the 90th percentile and that alternative signal paths are typically not strong enough to provide significant beamswitching gains.

    摘要: This paper develops a notion of capacity–delay–error (CDE) boundaries as a performance model of networked sources and systems. The goal is to provision effective capacities that sustain certain statistical delay guarantees with a small probability of error. We use a stochastic non-equilibrium approach that models the variability of traffic and service to formalize the influence of delay constraints on the effective capacity. Permitting unbounded delays, known ergodic capacity results from information theory are recovered in the limit. We prove that the model has the property of additivity, which enables composing CDE boundaries obtained for sources and systems as if in isolation. A method for construction of CDE boundaries is devised based on moment-generating functions, which includes the large body of results from the theory of effective bandwidths. Solutions for essential sources, channels, and respective coders are derived, including Huffman coding, MPEG video, Rayleigh fading, and hybrid automatic repeat request. Results for tandem channels and for the composition of sources and channels are shown.

    摘要: Recent telecommunication systems exploit the degrees of freedom of the radio propagation channel more and more. Deeper investigations of system performance require realistic channel models. For this purpose, a new MIMO UWB channel sounder is introduced. The novelty is its capacity to estimate simultaneously direction of arrival and departure in 3D, including polarization state information. The second novelty is a modified SIC algorithm which speeds up the search of the multipath properties of the propagation channel. An extensive measurement campaign is performed in different residential environments and statistical results are provided.

  • FibAR: Embedding Optical Fibers in 3D Printed Objects for Active Markers in Dynamic Projection Mapping

    摘要: We experimentally investigate mutual information and generalized mutual information for coherent optical transmission systems. The impact of the assumed channel distribution on the achievable rate is investigated for distributions in up to four dimensions. Single channel and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission over transmission links with and without inline dispersion compensation are studied. We show that for conventional WDM systems without inline dispersion compensation, a circularly symmetric complex Gaussian distribution is a good approximation of the channel. For other channels, such as with inline dispersion compensation, this is no longer true and gains in the achievable information rate are obtained by considering more sophisticated four-dimensional (4D) distributions. We also show that for nonlinear channels, gains in the achievable information rate can also be achieved by estimating the mean values of the received constellation in four dimensions. The highest gain for such channels is seen for a 4D correlated Gaussian distribution.

    摘要: The global bandwidth shortage facing wireless carriers has motivated the exploration of the underutilized millimeter wave (mm-wave) frequency spectrum for future broadband cellular communication networks. There is, however, little knowledge about cellular mm-wave propagation in densely populated indoor and outdoor environments. Obtaining this information is vital for the design and operation of future fifth generation cellular networks that use the mm-wave spectrum. In this paper, we present the motivation for new mm-wave cellular systems, methodology, and hardware for measurements and offer a variety of measurement results that show 28 and 38 GHz frequencies can be used when employing steerable directional antennas at base stations and mobile devices.

    摘要: This tutorial introduction to the modeling of RF wireless communication channels is aimed at readers in the diffraction and scattering community, who have no background in radio-frequency wireless communication systems. It clarifies the reasoning behind the choice of parameters used in channel modeling, their utility, and their relationship to the physical phenomena taking place within the channel. The distinguishing features of the mm-wave wireless channel, expected to be deployed in future 5G cellular systems, wireless networks, and Internet-of-Things, are briefly summarized, which highlight the need for developing mm-wave channel models.
