摘要: Improving quality of life (QOL) has become an important issue for patients with neurological diseases such as ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and SMA (spinal atrophy). At the same time, it is indispensable to secure a communication device that displays its own intention, and various interfaces have been proposed. In this research, we developed a glasses-type switching wearable device focusing on eyeball movement. Here, images around the eyeball were obtained by USB-camera equipped with infrared LEDs, and pupils were extracted by Hough transform procedure. Furthermore, in order to apply a communication aid operation, a detection model of the line-of-sight direction was constructed by acquiring the coordinates of the cornea surface reflection image.

Randomised double-masked placebo-controlled trial of the cumulative treatment efficacy profile of intense pulsed light therapy for meibomian gland dysfunction
摘要: Purpose: To assess long-term cumulative treatment effects of intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy in meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Methods: Eighty-seven symptomatic participants (58 female, mean±SD age, 53±16 years) with clinical signs of MGD were enrolled in a prospective, double-masked, parallel-group, randomised, placebo-controlled trial. Participants were randomised to receive either four or five homogeneously sequenced light pulses or placebo treatment to both eyes, (E-Eye Intense Regulated Pulsed Light, E-Swin, France). Visual acuity, dry eye symptomology, tear film parameters, and ocular surface characteristics were assessed immediately before treatment on days 0, 15, 45, 75, and four weeks after treatment course completion on day 105. Inflammatory and goblet cell function marker expression, and eyelid swab microbiology cultures were evaluated at baseline and day 105. Results: Significant decreases in OSDI, SPEED, and SANDE symptomology scores, and meibomian gland capping, accompanied by increased tear film lipid layer thickness, and inhibited Corynebacterium macginleyi growth were observed in both treatment groups (all p<0.05). Sustained clinical improvements occurred in both treatment groups from day 75, although significant changes from day 45, in lipid layer quality, meibomian gland capping, OSDI and SANDE symptomology, were limited to the five-flash group (all p<0.05). Conclusions: IPL therapy effected significant improvements in dry eye symptomology, tear film lipid layer thickness, and meibomian gland capping in MGD patients. Five-flash IPL treatment showed superior clinical efficacy to four-flash, and an initial course of at least four treatments is suggested to allow for establishment of sustained cumulative therapeutic benefits prior to evaluation of overall treatment efficacy.

Efficacy and Safety of Intense Pulsed Light in Patients With Meibomian Gland Dysfunction—A Randomized, Double-Masked, Sham-Controlled Clinical Trial
摘要: To study the efficacy and safety of intense pulsed light (IPL) in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). This prospective randomized double-masked sham-controlled trial included 114 patients with MGD. Patients were randomized into the IPL or sham group. Either the IPL or sham procedure was performed on days 0, 15, and 45. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), visual analog scale, visual acuity, tear breakup time, meibum quality and expressibility, meibography grade, ocular surface staining, tear film lipid layer thickness, tear osmolarity, Schirmer test, tear interleukin-1 receptor agonist, and interleukin-6 levels were examined on days 0, 15, and 45 and at months 3 and 6. Subgroup analysis according to stage and the patient’s compliance to conventional treatment were also analyzed. Any adverse events during the study were recorded. A multilevel mixed-effect linear regression model was used. P value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. At 6 months, tear breakup time, meibum quality grades, expressibility grades, and OSDI were better in the IPL group (5.23 6 2.91 vs. 3.11 6 0.99 seconds, P , 0.001; 8.74 6 4.74 vs. 13.19 6 5.01, P , 0.001; 0.50 6 0.67 vs. 1.12 6 0.70, P , 0.001; 24.29 6 16.92 vs. 32.71 6 20.07, P , 0.05). OSDI, meibum quality, and expressibility in the IPL group began to improve at day 15 (P , 0.001), whereas the results in the sham group began to improve at day 45 (P , 0001). No adverse event occurred after IPL. IPL is effective and safe for MGD treatment in all stages regardless of compliance.

Selective nano-thermal therapy of human retinoblastoma in retinal laser surgery
摘要: In this research, an experimental validated predictive finite element model of a cancerous human eye is developed to investigate how the tumor cells in retinoblastoma can be selectively damaged in the course of laser irradiation. In the computational modeling, the tumor is assumed to be in the initial growth stages and located in the macular zone. The statistical calculations testify that an 8.5% improvement in our estimation of the experimental temperature inside the normal human eye compared to those provided by the previous model has been achieved. Under the surgical conditions, the at-risk regions are determined, and the thermal responses of the tissue to various intrinsic and operating factors are obtained and discussed. Our findings indicate that, in the same amount of exposure time, introducing biodegradable nanoparticles in a concentration of 0.2 into the tumor tissue can increase the lethal zone area by 51 percent, and could plays an effective role in surviving of corneal injury.

[Laser Institute of America ILSC? 2019: Proceedings of the International Laser Safety Conference - South Kissimmee, Florida, USA (March 18–21, 2019)] International Laser Safety Conference - Reducing hazards of consumer laser pointer misuse
摘要: This paper begins with a review of significant laser pointer news since ILSC 2017. These include new laws in the U.K., Canada and Switzerland; an MIT-developed laser pointer detection system, the SAE-published ARP6378 with pilot mitigation recommendations, a review of 111 laser pointer eye injuries worldwide, the status of FDA’s 2016 proposal to allow only red laser pointers, and the new LaserIncidents.com website that lists known databases that compile laser incidents and accidents. The paper then looks at methods for reducing the number and severity of laser pointer incidents. For example, Australia and New Zealand have laws severely restricting ownership of laser pointers over 1 mW. In Australia, aircraft incidents increased significantly after the 2008 ban and currently are roughly equal to U.S. incidents on a per capita basis. In New Zealand, aircraft incidents increased after a ban went into effect in 2014. The ARP6378 document cites pilots as the last line of defense. Pilot education, training and protective eyewear/windscreens are discussed in the document. Changes in labeling are suggested. The usefulness of prosecuting laser offenders is discussed. A summary is given of a Jan. 2019 symposium in Tokyo, seeking new laws and ideas for reducing aircraft incidents, consumer eye injuries, and injuries from laser cosmetic devices. Finally, suggested directions for future research are given.

摘要: Smart eyewear that detects eye movements and head motions have been applied to studies on detecting onea??s mental state [5], engagement level in social interactions, and measuring concentration [4]. However, applications for these smart eyewear that offers intriguing and novel interactive experience has seldom been used as wearable device-control. As an application of this type of wearable, we used J!NS MEME that enables head motion data to control smart devices with hands-free operation in a pet toy system to facilitate human-animal interaction for people in cases of limited mobility either due to physical disability or the lack of enough space allowance. For our study, we primarily focused on exploring interaction possibilities between pet owners, who experience physical limitations due to the latter context, and their pets. The study result shows a promising start for opening up new interaction opportunities for our targeted audience in the context of physical limitation; however, the impact on those with physical disabilities is still arguable as it is yet to be evaluated.Nevertheless, since smart eyewear can act as an unobtrusive and useful body extension for people with limited mobility, we believe that it can be an alternative input option that can be applied not just to human-animal interaction but also to wider domains such smart devices and home systems for these users.

2?kHz single-frequency, injection-seeded Q-switched laser with a ‘double-reflection’ architecture
摘要: A high-repetition-rate single-frequency injection-seeded Q-switched Er:YAG laser with a ‘double reflection’ architecture is reported. Single-frequency laser pulses at a pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of 2 kHz are obtained by using ‘ramp-fire’ injection-seeding technique. The half-width of the pulse spectrum is measured to be 2.05 MHz by using the heterodyne beating technique. The novel ‘double-reflection’ architecture is employed in order to achieve a stable high-repetition-rate single-frequency operation. As far as we know, 2 kHz is the highest PRF achieved from a single-frequency, injection-seeded Q-switched Er:YAG laser that can be used in a wind Lidar system.

摘要: Nowadays eye-safe lasers emitting at 1.5-1.6 μm spectral range find applications in LIDAR systems. These applications require compact and reliable pulsed laser sources with low power consumption for integration into handheld devices. For LIDAR systems application laser pulses should be of high output beam quality to have good image resolution, short pulse duration to ensure high accuracy, enough high pulse energy to attain long-distance detection, and high pulse repetition rates to achieve high speed of scanning. Longitudinally diode-pumped lasers based on aluminium oxoborate crystals REAl3(BO3)4 (RE = Y, Gd, Lu) co-doped with erbium and ytterbium ions combine appropriate properties of output radiation and suitable overall dimensions that makes their application useful for compact LIDAR systems [1]. Here we report on optical contact bonded Er,Yb:GdAl3(BO3)4/Co:MgAl2O4 passively Q-switched monolithic 1.5 μm laser with short pulse duration.

摘要: The aim of this work was to investigate the utilization of Co:Spinel as saturable absorber for eye-safe Er:YAG laser generating at 1645 nm wavelength. Co:Spinel (Co:MgAl2O4, Co:MALO) absorber is used to Q-switching for laser systems generating about 1.5 μm wavelength, for example for Er:glass laser. Due to lower radiation absorption above the 1.55 μm wavelength of Co:spinel, the another passive absorbers were investigated, e.g. U:SrF2 [1], Co:GSGG [2], and Cr:ZnSe [3]. However, the advantage of Co:Spinel is its high damage threshold and therefore, the research of its utilization would be prolonged, especially for 1.6 μm Er:YAG laser.

摘要: We report on the development of high peak-power broad-area laser diodes emitting in the 1.5 μm wavelength band for eye-safe LIDAR applications. The laser contain a monolithically integrated surface grating section for wavelength stabilization. The performance merits of the wavelength stabilized laser is benchmark against traditional Fabry-Pérot diodes fabricated within the same processing batch and having identical quantum-well design. The study demonstrates the efficacy of the surface-grating applied to broad-area lasers and the benefits rendered possible for decreasing the spectral linewidth and reducing the temperature drift of the wavelength. This type of high-power light source can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of eye-safe time-of-flight LIDARs in bright illumination conditions by making possible the use of narrow band-pass filters for reducing the ambient sunlight. Moreover, the same advantage to reject ambient signal is expected in other applications such as gated imaging [1], or when using a pulsed laser as the illuminator in high speed imaging applications. In addition, the variation in the emission wavelengths from wafer-to-wafer and from chip-to-chip is reduced compared to non-stabilized lasers.
