Polarization-controlled and single-transverse-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with eye-shaped oxide aperture
摘要: We presented a single-transverse-mode and single-polarization vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) with an eye-shaped oxide aperture, obtained by enhanced anisotropic oxidation of oxide layer. For apertures with dimensions of 2 ' 4.6 and 3 ' 6 μm2, the orthogonal polarization suppression ratio (OPSR) of the VCSEL was 22 and 19 dB, respectively. A single-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of more than 25 dB at an output power of 0.5 mW was also achieved for the VCSEL with aperture dimension of 2 ' 4.6 μm2. We believe that the proposed method to realize the mode and polarization control of VCSELs has great potential in future applications. ? 2018 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

An opsin 5–dopamine pathway mediates light-dependent vascular development in the eye
摘要: During mouse postnatal eye development, the embryonic hyaloid vascular network regresses from the vitreous as an adaption for high-acuity vision. This process occurs with precisely controlled timing. Here, we show that opsin 5 (OPN5; also known as neuropsin)-dependent retinal light responses regulate vascular development in the postnatal eye. In Opn5-null mice, hyaloid vessels regress precociously. We demonstrate that 380-nm light stimulation via OPN5 and VGAT (the vesicular GABA/glycine transporter) in retinal ganglion cells enhances the activity of inner retinal DAT (also known as SLC6A3; a dopamine reuptake transporter) and thus suppresses vitreal dopamine. In turn, dopamine acts directly on hyaloid vascular endothelial cells to suppress the activity of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) and promote hyaloid vessel regression. With OPN5 loss of function, the vitreous dopamine level is elevated and results in premature hyaloid regression. These investigations identify violet light as a developmental timing cue that, via an OPN5–dopamine pathway, regulates optic axis clearance in preparation for visual function.

Ultraviolet to blue blocking and wavelength convertible films using carbon dots for interrupting eye damage caused by general lighting
摘要: Our eyes are regularly exposed to ultraviolet (UV) and blue light emitting diode (LED) light-based devices. However, the blue light induces macular degeneration, optic nerve crush, eye strain, and increases reactive oxygen species, which negatively influence eye-related cells (photoreceptor and retinal pigmented epithelial cells). UV light is also harmful to humans. It induces photokeratitis, cataract, and ocular surface squamous neoplasia. Here, we present carbon dot films with different carbon dot contents, prepared by a simple method. The films exhibit strong UV and blue light absorption. The transmittance of carbon dot films is >70% in the visible region (>500 nm). The UV light blocking ratio of commercial blue blocking filter and carbon dot film using UV LED chips is 94.1% and 95.9% (40 wt%), respectively. The blue light blocking ratio of commercial blue blocking filter and carbon dot film using blue LED chips is 10.2% and 82.3% (40 wt%), respectively. These results indicate that the prepared carbon dot films have a UV blocking rate similar to that of commercial blue blocking filters and a much better blue blocking rate than commercial blue blocking filters. Therefore, they can be effectively used as UV and blue blocking films in various applications.

摘要: Humans process high volumes of visual information to perform everyday tasks. In a reaching task, the brain estimates the distance and position of the object of interest, to reach for it. Having a grasp intention in mind, human eye-movements produce specific relevant patterns. Our Gaze-Contingent Intention Decoding Engine uses eye-movement data and gaze-point position to indicate the hidden intention. We detect the object of interest using deep convolution neural networks and estimate its position in a physical space using 3D gaze vectors. Then we trigger the possible actions from an action grammar database to perform an assistive movement of the robotic arm, improving action performance in physically disabled people. This document is a short report to accompany the Gaze-contingent Intention Decoding Engine demonstrator, providing details of the setup used and results obtained.

A novel fiber Bragg grating system for eye tracking
摘要: Eye movement evaluation is vital for diagnosis of various ophthalmological and neurological disorders. The present study proposes a novel, noninvasive, wearable device to acquire the eye movement based on a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Sensor. The proposed Fiber Bragg Grating Eye Tracker (FBGET) can capture the displacement of the eyeball during its movements in the form of strain variations on a cantilever. The muscular displacement generated by the eyeball over the lower eyelid, by its swiveling action while moving the gaze on a target object, is converted into strain variations on a cantilever. The developed FBGET is investigated for dynamic tracking of the eye- gaze movement for various actions of the eye such as fixations, saccades and main sequence. This approach was validated by recording the eye movement using the developed FBGET as well as conventional camera-based eye tracker methodology simultaneously. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and the real-time applicability of the proposed FBGET as an eye tracking device. In conclusion, the present study illustrates a novel methodology involving displacement of lower eyelid for eye tracking application along with the employment of FBG sensors to carry out the same. The proposed FBGET can be utilized in both clinical and hospital environment for diagnostic purposes owing to its advantages of wear-ability and ease of implementation making it a point of care device

An omnidirectional DIC system for dynamic strain measurements on soft biological parts to An omnidirectional DIC system for dynamic strain measurement on soft biological tissues and organs
摘要: A limitation to the potential use of inverse methods in identifying the spatially varying properties of biological tissues consists in obtaining the required set of experimental data. In fact, whereas on the numerical side there are almost no limits to complexity in terms of geometry and material behavior of the model, on the experimental side, the collection of full-field displacement and strain data over the full surface of complex 3D geometries still represents a challenge. To address this issue, this work proposes an omnidirectional-DIC method capable of obtaining full-field information over the entire surface of native intact biological parts undergoing large deformation. This is made possible by the use of a concave conical mirror that enlarges the field of view of a conventional binocular stereo-DIC system up to 360° × 320°. The pair of highly distorted panoramic scenes reflected by the conical mirror are then matched by using a novel iterative image deformation scheme. In particular, first, a robust feature-based algorithm is used to calculate the gross disparity between images, then, an iterative NURBS-based intensity interpolation scheme refines the correlation through a hybrid local-global DIC approach. The accuracy of the developed image matching scheme was evaluated on synthetically generated images simulating a large and heterogeneous deformation field. Then, the potential of the proposed omnidirectional-DIC method was tested with rubber analogs reproducing the most representative geometries and loading states involved in biological materials characterization. Finally, as an illustrative example of application, full-field DIC shape and deformation measurements was performed over a whole porcine eye tested in-vitro under reproduced physiological load.

HMD-based cover test system for the diagnosis of ocular misalignment
摘要: The diagnosis of ocular misalignment is difficult and needs examination by ophthalmologists and orthoptists. However, there are not enough qualified personnel to perform such diagnoses. The eye position check is in part systematized. With this check system, we can detect not only the symptoms but also the angle and the extent of strabismus. However, the types of strabismus that can be detected with this technique are limited to exotropia. The purpose of this study is to develop a simplified check system to screen at least the presence of strabismus apart from the type of strabismus or amount of ocular deviation. First, we digitalized the check process. Specifically, we digitized the elemental technology, i.e., the cover–uncover function, required for automation of the typical cover test for eye position check. Furthermore, we developed and implemented an abnormality determination process and evaluated the performance of the system through this experiment, the results of which indicated a higher detection capability than the conventional cover test performed by ophthalmologists and orthoptists.

Toward a new age of patient centricity? The application of eye-tracking to the development of connected self-injection systems
摘要: Background: Increasing interest in digitally enhanced drug delivery tools urges industry and academia to rethink current approaches to product usability. This article introduces mobile eye-tracking, generating detailed contextual data about user engagement with connected self-injection systems as a new methodological approach to formative usability assessment. Methods: A longitudinal case study with a total of 35 injection-na?ve participants was conducted. In three consecutive experiments, eye-tracking was applied to formative usability testing of a novel connected self-injection device. Three eye-tracking derived usability indicators were established to assess product effectiveness, efficiency, and ease of use. Results: Analysis of the data revealed events of user hesitation, process interruption and unintended action, and these occurrences could either be completely eliminated or significantly reduced throughout the process. At the same time, the overall use duration decreased from 86.1 to 58.7 sec. Analysis revealed that product modifications successfully guided user attention to those interface elements most relevant during each task, thereby improving product ease-of-use. Conclusions: The step-wise improvement in the usability indicators demonstrates that iteratively applying eye-tracking methods effectively supports the user-centered design of connected self-injection systems. The results highlight how eye-tracking can be employed to gain an in-depth understanding of patient engagement with novel healthcare technologies.

Anti-detection technology of cat eye target based on decentered field lens
摘要: Optoelectronic imaging equipment is easy to expose to active laser detection devices because of 'cat eye' effect. In this paper, we propose a new structure of optical system to reduce the retrore?ector effect of a cat eye target. Decentered ?eld lens structure is adopted in the design without sacri?cing imaging quality and clear aperture. An imaging system with ±30? ?eld of view is taken for example. The detailed design and simulation results are presented. The results indicate that this kind of optical system can reduce the retrore?ection signal substantially and maintain acceptable imaging performance.

摘要: Based on the memory of the member of the committee of e-Business Engineering (ICEBE) and the eye-tracking technology, this paper explores the effect of online video advertising on memory and draws data from 100 tested subjects after watching several videos. The research shows that there is a correlation between eye-tracking data and memory and the eye movement model through the experiment.
