[OSA Optical Fiber Sensors - Lausanne (2018..-..)] 26th International Conference on Optical Fiber Sensors - All-Fiber Electro-Optic Dual Optical Frequency Comb for Fiber Sensors
摘要: We present a new technique for generating a Dual Optical Frequency Comb and we apply the technique on a Chirped Fiber Bragg Grating sensor to demonstrate quasi-static absorption measurements. In addition, it can be also applied to dispersion measurements. This technique is able to generate RF mapping of two optical frequency combs without the use of an acousto-optic modulator.

Signal Processing for Fiber Optic Systems
摘要: This paper reviews the digital signal processing (DSP) methods used in coherent fiber optic communication systems. With the advances in high speed DSP, linear impairments such as chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) can be compensated for using fixed/adaptive equalizers. It is also possible to compensate for the interplay between dispersion and nonlinearity by digital back propagation (DBP), in which the virtual fibers whose signs of dispersion, loss and nonlinear coefficients are opposite of those of the transmission fiber, are realized in the digital domain by numerically solving the nonlinear Schr?dinger equation (NLSE). DSP equalization enhances the transmission performance and error-free reach of coherent fiber optic systems significantly.

High sensitivity strain sensor based on twin hollow microspheres
摘要: A sensor based on 2 hollow core microspheres is proposed. Each microsphere was produced separately through fusion splicing and then joined. The resultant structure is a Fabry-Perot interferometer with multiple interferences that can be approximated to a 4-wave interferometer. Strain characterization was attained for a maximum of 1350 με, achieving a linear response with a sensitivity of 3.39 (cid:1) 0.04 PM/με. The fabrication technique, fast and with no chemical hazards, as opposed to other fabrication techniques, makes the proposed sensor a compelling solution for strain measurements in hash environments.

Fiber-optic UTC(k) timescale distribution with automated link delay cancelation
摘要: In this paper we describe the idea and practical realization of an automated calibrator of fiber-optic UTC(k) distribution system, along with a high-resolution shifter of 1 PPS signal, which allows to cancel to the propagation delay and thus to produce the 1 PPS at the remote system output with practically zeroed offset. The solution was experimentally verified with ten different optical paths, up to 300 km long. The rms offset of the output timescale in our experiments was 7.1 ps, and maximum absolute value did not exceed 15 ps.

Soliton solutions of perturbed nonlinear Schrodinger equation with Kerr law nonlinearity via the modified simple equation method and the subordinary differential equation method
摘要: The objective of this paper was to obtain soliton solutions for a perturbed nonlinear Schrodinger equation with Kerr law nonlinearity using the modified simple equation method and subordinary differential equation method. These methods appear to be efficient and they can be applied in seeking exact solutions of many other nonlinear evolution equations encountered in science and engineering studies.

摘要: The performance of a cost-effective receiver, based on a balanced 3×3 polarization maintaining symmetric coupler, applied to a 15GHz radio-over-fibre back-haul transport network for C-RAN architecture, is experimentally validated. A power sensitivity of -29dBm is demonstrated, with low required local oscillator power (7 dBm) over a long transmission distance (60 km).

Tailored long range forces on polarizable particles by collective scattering of broadband radiation
摘要: Collective coherent light scattering by polarizable particles creates surprisingly strong, long range inter-particle forces originating from interference of the light scattered by different particles. While for monochromatic laser beams this interaction decays with the inverse distance, we show here that in general the effective interaction range and geometry can be controlled by the illumination bandwidth and geometry. As generic example we study the modi?cations inter-particle forces within a 1D chain of atoms trapped in the ?eld of a con?ned optical nano?ber mode. For two particles we ?nd short range attraction as well as optical binding at multiple distances. The range of stable distances shrinks with increasing light bandwidth and for a very large bandwidth ?eld as e.g. blackbody radiation. We ?nd a strongly attractive potential up to a critical distance beyond which the force gets repulsive. Including multiple scattering can even lead to the appearance of a stable con?guration at a large distance. Such broadband scattering forces should be observable contributions in ultra-cold atom interferometers or atomic clocks setups. They could be studied in detail in 1D geometries with ultra-cold atoms trapped along or within an optical nano?ber. Broadband radiation force interactions might also contribute in astrophysical scenarios as illuminated cold dust clouds.

DSP-free and Real-Time NRZ transmission of 50 Gb/s over 15 km SSMF and 64 Gb/s back-to-back with a 1.3 μm VCSEL
摘要: We demonstrate and analyze 50 Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) transmission over 15 km of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), 60 Gb/s NRZ transmission over 5 km of SSMF and up to 64 Gb/s NRZ back-to-back using a directly modulated short-cavity long-wavelength single-mode VCSEL emitting at 1326 nm. Owing to an analog 6-tap transmit feedforward equalizer, the link can operate without digital signal processing. In all three cases, real-time bit error ratio measurements below the 7% overhead hard-decision forward error correction (FEC) threshold are demonstrated when transmitting a pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS) with a period of 27-1 bits. In addition, we analyze the interplay between the residual fiber chromatic dispersion at the operating wavelength of the VCSEL and the chirp due to direct modulation. These results demonstrate how O-band, short-cavity long-wavelength single-mode VCSELs can be used in intra data center networks, as well as inter data center networks at reaches below 15 km.

Effect of Faraday mirror imperfections in a fiber optic current sensor dedicated to ITER
摘要: Plasma current measurements in ITER are safety-related and must therefore satisfy a very demanding specification. In this paper, the use of the Fiber Optics Current Sensor (FOCS) operating in the reflection mode with a Faraday mirror to perform plasma current measurements is analyzed. Based on the Jones matrix formalism, we performed numerical simulations to investigate the impact of the Faraday mirror detuning on the measurement accuracy. We show that the use of standard commercial components does not allow to satisfy the ITER requirements for the whole plasma current range. A simple solution to the problem is proposed, which consists in taking into account a mirror calibration in the current estimator. We show that the achievable mirror calibration accuracy is sufficient to fulfill the ITER requirements.
