  • Fractals in architecture: The visual interest, preference, and mood response to projected fractal light patterns in interior spaces

    摘要: The visual patterns of fractal stimuli on a computer screen and the brightness patterns of light projected onto room surfaces have independently been shown to influence human perceptual responses. It is not clear, however, what effect would result if the same fractal patterns were projected as light patterns on room surfaces. This paper reports on the results of three studies investigating visual interest, visual preference, and mood responses elicited by varying complexities of fractal light patterns projected on walls and floors of an interior space. The results suggest that fractal light patterns of medium to medium-high complexity (quantified by the fractal dimension D = 1.5–1.7) were significantly more visually interesting than other patterns. Crucially, viewing distance did not significantly influence visual interest or visual preference. Based on these studies, the use of medium to medium-high complexity fractal light patterns in interior spaces may be useful for enhancing occupants’ visual interest and mood.

  • Effect of temperature on digital images of speckle patterns generated by a metallic rough surface

    摘要: It is well known that roughness can be inferred from digital images of speckle patterns generated by illuminated rough surfaces, by analyzing parameters such as fractal dimension, lacunarity and correlation, to cite a few. In this article, we investigate the effect of temperature on the speckle pattern generated by the light scattered from a metallic rough surface. We show that fractal dimension is less sensitive to temperature changes than are lacunarity and correlation, and provide information about which method is more suitable for processing the speckle patterns produced by rough surfaces under temperature variation.

  • Fractal Analysis - Applications in Physics, Engineering and Technology || Fractals in Antennas and Metamaterials Applications

    摘要: Recently, telecommunications systems have been requiring more advanced features in the design and operation. Among others a smaller size of devices, which can be integrated for multiple mobile communications systems, applied in one user's device board, such as PDA or smartphone. Moreover, the cost of mass production should be minimized as much as possible. To meet part of that request, the antennas of these devices should have small size, lower weight, operating in multiple frequency bands and/or be broadband. There are many research methods to achieve this goal, one of which is using the fractal geometries for the shape of antenna elements. In recent years, there are many fractal shapes that have been proposed for such applications, and the designed antennas have significantly improved antenna features such as smaller size, operating in multi-frequency bands, with improved power gain and efficiency. In recent years, the new approach for modern antenna the metamaterials, MTM, is adopted, and sometimes that based on the fractal geometry is adopted.

    摘要: The research paper presents a model for studying both the parameters and dynamics of laser light as a nonlinear dynamic system. The model provides for the measurement of the values of physical quantities by non-linear metrology methods and the analysis of the research findings with topological tools. The model is based on the assumption of interval values of the measured values and the possibility of changing the stationary dynamics into the random one. The model contains an experiment scheme and a procedure for evaluating measurement results. The peculiarity of the model lies in its systemic approach and suitability for measuring and researching stationary and chaotic modes. The model provides for the measurement of the emission parameter values intervals in various modes, of their stability values and time series prediction. Classification of the system dynamics is performed using the fractal dimension. The model can be used both to ensure the stability of the laser light parameters, and to obtain and control random emission.

  • Characterization and analysis on micro-hardness and microstructure evolution of brass subjected to laser shock peening

    摘要: In view of the temperature distribution of the high-temperature geothermal tunnels, the surrounding rock temperature was divided into four grades (40 (cid:1)C, 60 (cid:1)C, 80 (cid:1)C and 100 (cid:1)C) to simulate the hot-dry environment. Using the standard curing environment as a reference condition, the mechanical properties and pore structure characteristics of concrete for shotcrete use under hot-dry environments at different temperatures were studied by mechanical and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests. Fractal dimension of pore structure was calculated through the fractal model based on thermodynamic method. Bivariate correlation analysis was conducted on the curing temperature and the pore structure parameters. The results show that the 40 (cid:1)C hot-dry environment is conducive to enhance the mechanical properties of concrete and optimize its pore structure at the age of 1d. However, the hot-dry environments after 7 days will deteriorate the mechanical properties and pore structure of concrete, and the higher the temperature, the more obvious the deterioration. There is a significant correlation between curing temperature and porosity of capillary pores, median pore diameter, average pore diameter and fractal dimension.

  • Facile green and one-pot synthesis of purple perilla derived carbon quantum dot as a fluorescent sensor for silver ion

    摘要: Coalbed methane (CBM) reservoir pore structure is extremely complex and heterogeneous. With the fractal theory, the geometric and structural characteristics of the pore structure could be quanti?ed. However, few studies have aimed to understand the fractal features of compositional-based macrolithotypes (bright, semi-bright, semi-dull, and dull coals). In this work, samples from the Hancheng area, in the southeastern Ordos Basin, China, were collected to investigate the fractal features of pore structures for macrolithotypes and calculate fractal dimensions (Da1 and Da2 for adsorption pores; Ds1 and Ds2 for seepage pores) based on low temperature N2 adsorption and mercury intrusion data, respectively. Meanwhile, the impact of the fractal dimensions on the gas adsorption capacity and the seepage ability were discussed. The results demonstrate that when bright coal turns into dull coal, the vitrinite content, helium permeability, and gas adsorption capacity gradually decrease, while the coal density, mineral content, and ash yield increase. Since the Da1 and Ds1 either deviate from the natural fractal dimension (2 < D < 3) or have a poor correlation with macrolithotypes, Da2 and Ds2 are regarded as the adsorption and seepage pore fractal dimensions, respectively. Of all the coal macrolithotypes, bright coal has the smallest BET speci?c surface area and micropore proportion, which results in the smallest fractal dimension Da2, while for the dull coal, this is just the contrary; due to the higher mineral content, a higher Da2 of the dull coal indicates a more complicated adsorption pore structure, and the coal with a larger Langmuir volume has a smaller Da2. For the seepage pores, when the bright coal turns into dull coal, the macropore proportion gradually decreases, but the pore proportion tends toward equilibrium, and the mercury withdrawal e?ciency increases; the dull coal has a larger Ds2, indicating a more complex seepage pore structure than that in the bright coal. Due to the decreasing macropore proportion and mineral ?lling, Ds2 demonstrates an obvious negative correlation with the helium permeability and macropore proportion.

  • Defect induced thermal-plasma coupling damage in optical films under nanosecond pulse laser irradiation

    摘要: Ten prestressed concrete beams were designed and manufactured, which were preloaded with 40% and 60% ultimate load to crack. Then the beams were reinforced by CFRP and immersed in chloride condition for 120 days. After that, a four-point bending test was performed. Based on the statistics and fractal theories, the cracking mechanism, distribution and shapes of cracks in mid span were researched, considering the initial cracks, CFRP reinforcement and chloride corrosion. The test results demonstrate that CFRP has a restraining effect on the cracks, and the effect decreases with the increases of heights. The crack widths conform to normal distribution, and the dispersion coefficient, average widths and characteristic widths decrease with the increase of the heights, and the three parameters of CFRP reinforced beams at the same heights are all smaller than those of unreinforced beams. The fractal dimensions of cracks in unreinforced beams and CFRP reinforced beams increase linearly and exponentially with load steps, respectively. CFRP reinforcement and Chloride corrosion makes the fractal dimension increase, respectively. The corrosion effect of chloride can be weakened by CFRP. Therefore, the fractal dimensions of beam cracks can be used to evaluate the damage caused by several coupled load conditions.

  • Fractal simulation of thin film nucleation growth process using a diffusion-limited aggregation model

    摘要: In order to study the initial nucleation and growth process of the films, a two-dimensional (2D) DLA model was established, and fractal dimension was calculated by sandbox method. Compared with the experimental results, the model can well characterize the morphology of nucleation and growth in the initial stage of film growth. In addition to the number of particles and deposition probability involved in other studies, the size of substrate and the location of central particles are also considered in this work. The growth morphology, fractal dimension and the number of simulated steps are presented in this paper.

  • Freshwater Fish Habitat Complexity Mapping Using Above and Underwater Structure-From-Motion Photogrammetry

    摘要: Substrate complexity is strongly related to biodiversity in aquatic habitats. We illustrate a novel framework, based on Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry (SfM) and Multi-View Stereo (MVS) photogrammetry, to quantify habitat complexity in freshwater ecosystems from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and underwater photography. We analysed sites in the Xingu river basin, Brazil, to reconstruct the 3D structure of the substrate and identify and map habitat classes important for maintaining fish assemblage biodiversity. From the digital models we calculated habitat complexity metrics including rugosity, slope and 3D fractal dimension. The UAV based SfM-MVS products were generated at a ground sampling distance (GSD) of 1.20–2.38 cm while the underwater photography produced a GSD of 1 mm. Our results show how these products provide spatially explicit complexity metrics, which are more comprehensive than conventional arbitrary cross sections. Shallow neural network classification of SfM-MVS products of substrate exposed in the dry season resulted in high accuracies across classes. UAV and underwater SfM-MVS is robust for quantifying freshwater habitat classes and complexity and should be chosen whenever possible over conventional methods (e.g., chain-and-tape) because of the repeatability, scalability and multi-dimensional nature of the products. The SfM-MVS products can be used to identify high priority freshwater sectors for conservation, species occurrences and diversity studies to provide a broader indication for overall fish species diversity and provide repeatability for monitoring change over time.
