  • Hydration accelerator and photocatalyst of nanotitanium dioxide synthesized via surfactant-assisted method in cement mortar

    摘要: To develop TiO2-based cement materials, the effect of TiO2 on the cement hydration and photocatalytic reaction should be investigated. The phase, size and shape of TiO2 are important factors for better understanding its application in cement. TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by a surfactant-assisted, reverse micelle method to control phase, size and shape by three selected surfactants namely: sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and TritonX-100. The synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM for observation of phase, size and shape. The modified micro structures of admixed cements with the different synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles incorporated were also examined by SEM. Particularly, the hydration process and photocatalytic reaction of the cement mixture were evaluated by heat flow calorimetry and methylene blue (MB) degradation, respectively. Results showed that anatase-rich and smaller size TiO2 nanoparticles provided accelerated cement hydration and the ability to degrade MB photocatalytically at the surface of admixed-TiO2 cement.

  • Dual-prism based terahertz time-domain attenuated total reflection spectroscopy and its application to characterise the hydration state of L-threonine in solution

    摘要: To investigate the hydration state of amino acids, terahertz time-domain attenuated total internal reflection (THz TD-ATR) spectroscopy is often adopted to measure the complex permittivity. However, the classical THz TD-ATR spectroscopy system has only a single ATR prism and requires prism cleaning for different measuring modes, increasing the time consumed and easily introducing errors due to the changing environment. To accelerate the measurements and avoid the influence of environmental fluctuations, in this paper, we designed and built a dual-prism based THz TD-ATR spectroscopy: two ATR prisms with and without samples setting on the optical rail can be sequentially switched to optical systems for easily and rapidly collecting both sample and reference ATR spectra. According to the measurements of deionised water, the dual-prism based THz TD-ATR spectroscopy system can measure the sample complex permittivity rapidly and with high accuracy. The complex permittivity of L-threonine in aqueous solution is measured and analysed via the proposed system, and the hydration numbers of L-threonine solutions in different concentrations are quantitatively characterised. It is believed that the dual-prism based THz TD-ATR technique is a powerful tool for quickly and accurately investigating the hydration of amino acids.

  • A New, Specular Reflection-Based, Precorneal Tear Film Stability Measurement Technique in a Rabbit Model: Viscoelastic Increases Tear Film Stability

    摘要: PURPOSE. To develop a safe, noninvasive, noncontact, continuous in vivo method to measure the dehydration rate of the precorneal tear film and to compare the effectiveness of a viscoelastic agent in maintaining the precorneal tear film to that of a balanced salt solution. METHODS. Software was designed to analyze the corneal reflection produced by the operating microscope’s coaxial illumination. The software characterized the shape of the reflection, which became distorted as the precorneal tear film evaporated; characterization was accomplished by fitting an ellipse to the reflection and measuring its projected surface area. Balanced salt solution Plus (BSS+) and a 2% hydroxypropylmethylcellulose viscoelastic were used as the test agents. The tear film evaporation rate was characterized and compared over a period of 20 minutes in 20 eyes from 10 New Zealand white rabbits. RESULTS. The ellipse axes ratio and surface area were found to decrease initially after each application of either viscoelastic or BSS+ and then to increase linearly as the tear film began to evaporate (P < 0.001) for eyes treated with BSS+ only. Eyes treated with BSS+ required 7.5 ± 2.7 applications to maintain sufficient corneal hydration during the 20-minute test period, whereas eyes treated with viscoelastic required 1.4 ± 0.5 applications. The rates of evaporation differed significantly (P < 0.043) between viscoelastic and BSS+. CONCLUSIONS. The shape and surface area of the corneal reflection are strongly correlated with the state of the tear film. Rabbits’ corneas treated with viscoelastic remained hydrated significantly longer than corneas treated with BSS+.

  • Spectral features of nuclear DNA in human sperm assessed by Raman Microspectroscopy: Effects of UV-irradiation and hydration

    摘要: Raman Microspectroscopy represents an innovative tool for the assessment of sperm biochemical features otherwise undetectable by routine semen analysis. Previously, it was shown that induced DNA damage can be detected in smeared sperm by this technique. This novel readout may be of value for clinical settings especially if it can be transferred to living cells. Yet, starting with living sperms this study was carried-out using a variety of conditions to disclose the Raman features of sperm nuclei under different hydration conditions and UV exposure. Human sperm were immobilized and Raman spectra were obtained from individual sperm as repeated measurements. To create conditions with controlled DNA damage, sperm samples were exposed to ultraviolet light. Several media were used to evaluate their effect on Raman spectra in aqueous conditions. To substantiate differences between the experimental conditions, the spectra were analyzed by Principal Component Analysis. We observed that spectra of sperm nuclei obtained in different solutions showed a qualitatively unchanged spectral pattern showing the principal signals related to DNA. Evaluating the effect of ultraviolet light generated the finding that spectra representing DNA damage were only observed in dry conditions but not in aqueous medium. Thus, Raman microspectroscopy was successfully applied for sperm analysis in different conditions, among them in live spermatozoa in aqueous solution during the initial measurement, revealing the principle use of this technique. However, implementation of Raman spectroscopy as a technique for clinical sperm analysis and selection may be especially relevant when DNA evaluation can be established using live sperm.

  • Transparent and Flexible Electronics Assembled with Metallic Nanowire-Layered Non-drying Glycerogel

    摘要: There has been increasing demand for transparent and mechanically durable electrical conductors for their uses in wearable electronic devices. It is common to layer metallic nanowires on transparent but stiff polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) or stretchable but opaque EcoflexTM-based substrates. Here, we hypothesized that layering metallic nanowires on a stretchable and hygroscopic gel would allow us to assemble a transparent, stretchable, and durable conductor. The hygroscopic property of the gel was attained by partially replacing water in the pre-formed polyacrylamide hydrogel with glycerol. The resulting gel, denoted as a glycerogel, could remain hydrated for over 6 months in air by taking up water molecules from the air. The glycerogel was tailored to be stretchable up to 8 times its original length by tuning the amount of cross-linker and acrylamide. The resulting glycerogel allowed for deposition of wavy silver nanowires using the pre-strain method up to 400 % pre-strain, without causing kinks and interfacial cracks often found with nanowires layered onto PDMS. With a pre-strain of 100%, the resulting nanowire-gel conductor exhibited optical transparency (85%) and electrical conductivity (17.1 ohm/sq) even after 5,000 cycles of deformation. The results of this study would broadly be useful to improve the performance of the next generation of flexible electronic devices.

  • Iona??Selective Sensors Based on Lasera??Induced Graphene for Evaluating Human Hydration Levels Using Urine Samples

    摘要: Complex graphene electrode fabrication protocols including conventional chemical vapor deposition and graphene transfer techniques as well as more recent solution-phase printing and postprint annealing methods have hindered the wide-scale implementation of electrochemical devices including solid-state ion-selective electrodes (ISEs). Herein, a facile graphene ISE fabrication technique that utilizes laser induced graphene (LIG), formed by converting polyimide into graphene by a CO2 laser and functionalization with ammonium ion (NH4+) and potassium ion (K+) ion-selective membranes, is demonstrated. The electrochemical LIG ISEs exhibit a wide sensing range (0.1 × 10?3–150 × 10?3 m for NH4+ and 0.3 × 10?3–150 × 10?3 m for K+) with high stability (minimal drop in signal after 3 months of storage) across a wide pH range (3.5–9.0). The LIG ISEs are also able to monitor the concentrations of NH4+ and K+ in urine samples (29–51% and 17–61% increase for the younger and older patient; respectively, after dehydration induction), which correlate well with conventional hydration status measurements. Hence, these results demonstrate a facile method to perform in-field ion sensing and are the first steps in creating a protocol for quantifying hydration levels through urine testing in human subjects.

  • Sweat monitoring beneath garments using passive, wireless resonant sensors interfaced with laser-ablated microfluidics

    摘要: Sweat loss can help determine hydration status of individuals working in harsh conditions, which is especially relevant to those who wear thick personal protective equipment (PPE) such as firefighters. A wireless, passive, conformable sweat sensor sticker is described here that can be worn under and interrogated through thick clothing to simultaneously measure sweat loss volume and conductivity. The sticker consists of a laser-ablated, microfluidic channel and a resonant sensor transducer. The resonant sensor is wirelessly read with a handheld vector network analyzer coupled to two, co-planar, interrogation antennas that measure the transmission loss. A sweat proxy is used to fill the channels and it is determined that the sensor can orthogonally determine the sweat conductivity and volume filled in the channel via peak transmission loss magnitude and frequency respectively. A four-person study is then used to determine level of sensor variance caused by local tissue dielectric heterogeneity and sensor-reader orientation.

  • Development of laser speckle blood flowmeter for evaluating the physiological function of skin

    摘要: Objective: We developed and demonstrated laser speckle ?owgraphy (LSFG) for two-dimensional (2D) skin blood ?ow (SBF) measurements to facilitate the noninvasive comparisons of SBF between individuals. Approach: By using morphing technology with a face mesh to compare SBF spatial distributions among individuals, we examined the practicability of SBF measurement with LSFG. Main results: (1) The uniformity of SBF measurement was demonstrated by examinations at different distances and angles for healthy subjects. (2) Mean blur rate (MBR)—a blood ?ow index of LSFG—exhibited signi?cant correlation with the thermal diffusion method (TDM)—an established blood ?ow measurement method—suggesting that MBR is an effective index of SBF. (3) Blowout time, the half-width duration/duration of one cardiac cycle, exhibited signi?cant negative correlation with age and positive correlation with stratum corneum hydration. Signi?cance: These results suggest that LSFG is useful for evaluating SBF-related skin properties, and it has signi?cant potential in medicine and cosmetology.

  • Recycling of light-emitting diode waste quartz sand as a pozzolanic material

    摘要: LED waste quartz sand (LEDWS), which is a prominent byproduct of the LED manufacturing process, may contaminate the environment because it comprises numerous nanoparticles of SiO2, Al2O3, and SiC, which are hazardous ingredients that are harmful to the environment and human health when disposed of improperly. Therefore, this study investigated the pozzolanic reaction behavior of these industrial byproducts to obtain a valuable processing method for LEDWS in cement. The results showed that with increased curing time, the strength of the pastes that incorporated 10% LEDWS approached that of ordinary Portland cement. A stretching broad band was centered at 1074e1081 cm-1 from chemically bound H2O in the hydrated calcium silicate (CeSeH). Thus, the correlation between the hydration degree of the paste that incorporated LEDWS and compressive strength evolution is crucial. The results implied that LEDWS can be used as a partial replacement source for cement applications; thus, LEDWS can be used as pozzolanic material.

  • Hydration of Ti3C2Tx MXene: an interstratification process with major implications on physical properties

    摘要: The MXenes, among which Ti3C2Tx is the most studied, are a large family of 2D materials with proven potential in a variety of application fields (e.g., energy storage and conversion, water purification, electromagnetic interference shielding, humidity sensor, etc). For most of these applications, MXenes properties depend, at least partly, on their water sorption ability and on the induced structural swelling, which is commonly considered a stepwise process, like in clay-like materials. In the present study, we rather evidence the systematic coexistence of different hydrates in MXene interstratified crystals. Hydration heterogeneity and related structure disorder are described from the quantitative analysis of X-ray diffraction data. This specific methodological approach allows disentangling the complex interstratification and rationalizing the prediction of MXene electrical properties. The widespread use of this approach paves the way for a systematic and thorough determination of MXene structure, including order-disorder, and thus for grasping the influence of structural disorder (hydration heterogeneity) on a large number of MXene physical properties (e. g. optical transparency, capacitance). Deciphering this complex structural disorder is also essential in the design of new MXene-based materials for a variety of applications (supercapacitors, batteries, water treatment…).
