High Speed Directly Modulated Fabry-Perot Lasers with an Ultra-Short Cavity Length
摘要: In this study, Fabry-Perot quantum well lasers with shortened cavity designs (25 and 50 μm) were fabricated. The devices had dry-etched and cleaved facets that exhibited an output power of up to 2.36 mW for a cavity length of 25 μm; good spectral performance was achieved. Single-optical-mode operation with better than 25dB of side mode suppression ratio can be achieved for the fabricated devices with 25- and 50-μm cavities. The short-cavity devices also exhibited high-speed modulation at elevated temperatures. Moreover, 25 Gb/s eye diagrams could be obtained at 65oC for the 25 μm device and 55oC for the 50 μm device. Due to their small area, ultra-short-cavity Fabry-Perot laser can be suitably used in next-generation light sources for optical communication.

604-nm high-order vortex beams directly generated from a Pr:YLF laser with a cavity-loss-induced gain switching mechanism
摘要: In this work, we demonstrated, for the ?rst time to the best of our knowledge, high-order vortex beams at 604 nm that were directly emitted from a Pr:YLF crystal laser. By combining a blue-diode-pumped v-type cavity for controllable Gouy phase introduction and o?-axis crystal rotation for high-order HG modes generation, topological charged 604-nm vortex lasers were attained up to the third order. Furthermore, the vortex beams were found to be lasing at 604 nm that was often deemed less prone to lase compared with 607-nm in the same energy manifold. By a detailed spectroscopic study and rate equation analysis, we proposed and con?rmed that the 604-nm transition of Pr:YLF crystal could be favorable in the vortex beam generation by a cavity-loss-induced gain switching process, in which the net gain at 604-nm could surpass that of 607-nm as the cavity loss was amassed beyond a threshold value.

摘要: We review the physics underlying the process of spontaneous emission, with a special focus on spontaneous emission into a resonator mode. We define the mode volume, verify the fundamental modal dimensions, present the spectral mode profile, the coherence time, the Q-factor, the Fühtbauer–Ladenburg equation, and the Purcell factor, and discuss their influence on different types of lasers. We obtain the relation between peak emission cross section, radiative lifetime, and emission linewidth. By interpreting spontaneous emission as stimulated emission driven by vacuum fluctuations, we derive the spontaneous-emission rate into a resonator mode and establish physical expressions for the fractions of spontaneous emission and total decay from the upper laser level into this mode. Furthermore, we discuss coupling of the atomic system with the coherent field inside a lasing resonator mode, resulting in the formation of a Mollow triplet, and demonstrate that it leads to a reduction of the spontaneous-emission rate into a coherently occupied resonator mode by a factor of 2.

Mode Engineering in Linear Coherently Coupled Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser Arrays
摘要: The supermode tuning of coherent 3×1 vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser arrays are characterized and simulated. The array elements are resonantly tuned to achieve coherent operation using selective current injection. Depending on the electrical bias, multiple coherent supermodes are observed above threshold. An effective index model is developed to account for the variable current injection and to simulate the supermodes of the linear array. Agreement between experimental near-field and far-field coherent modes and our model simulations are found both at and above lasing threshold.
