    摘要: Performance of automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems can significantly be improved by integrating further sources of information such as additional modalities, or acoustic channels, or acoustic models. Given the arising problem of information fusion, striking parallels to problems in digital communications are exhibited, where the discovery of the turbo codes by Berrou et al. was a groundbreaking innovation. In this paper, we show ways how to successfully apply the turbo principle to the domain of ASR and thereby provide solutions to the above-mentioned information fusion problem. The contribution of our work is fourfold: First, we review the turbo decoding forward-backward algorithm (FBA), giving detailed insights into turbo ASR, and providing a new interpretation and formulation of the so-called extrinsic information being passed between the recognizers. Second, we present a real-time capable turbo-decoding Viterbi algorithm suitable for practical information fusion and recognition tasks. Then we present simulation results for a multimodal example of information fusion. Finally, we prove the suitability of both our turbo FBA and turbo Viterbi algorithm also for a single-channel multimodel recognition task obtained by using two acoustic feature extraction methods. On a small vocabulary task (challenging, since spelling is included), our proposed turbo ASR approach outperforms even the best reference system on average over all SNR conditions and investigated noise types by a relative word error rate (WER) reduction of 22.4% (audio-visual task) and 18.2% (audio-only task), respectively.

  • An Improved Topography-Coupled Kernel-Driven Model for Land Surface Anisotropic Reflectance

    摘要: G.fast is a new standard from the International Telecommunication Union, which targets 1 Gb/s over short copper loops using frequencies up to 212 MHz. This new technology requires accurate parametric cable models for simulation, design, and performance evaluation tests. Some existing copper cable models were designed for the very high speed digital subscriber line spectra, i.e., frequencies up to 30 MHz, and adopt assumptions that are violated when the frequency range is extended to G.fast frequencies. This paper introduces a simple and causal cable model that is able to accurately characterize copper loops composed by single or multiple segments, in both frequency and time domains. Results using G.fast topologies show that, apart from being accurate, the new model is attractive due to its low computational cost and closed-form expressions for fitting its parameters to measurement data.

  • The Method of Integral Equations in Problems of Wave Diffraction in Waveguides

    摘要: This paper studies the propagation of steady-state oscillations in an irregular rectangular waveguide. The irregularity of the waveguide is caused by the presence inside it of a metallic inclusion in the form of a cylindrical inductive cylinder. To solve the problem in a complete electrodynamic formulation, it is necessary to investigate the boundary problem for the system of Maxwell equations. To study the waveguide system consisting of a waveguide with a well-conducting inclusion, the method of integral equations was applied. The cores of the integral equations are defined through the Green functions of the unfilled waveguide, written in terms of the waveguide modes. Algorithms for their calculation are developed on the basis of the selection of a logarithmic singularity, and algorithms for summing up the series belonging to them are created. The possibilities of the method of integral equations are illustrated with examples of calculating the reflection and transmission coefficients from inductive pins.

    摘要: This paper develops a notion of capacity–delay–error (CDE) boundaries as a performance model of networked sources and systems. The goal is to provision effective capacities that sustain certain statistical delay guarantees with a small probability of error. We use a stochastic non-equilibrium approach that models the variability of traffic and service to formalize the influence of delay constraints on the effective capacity. Permitting unbounded delays, known ergodic capacity results from information theory are recovered in the limit. We prove that the model has the property of additivity, which enables composing CDE boundaries obtained for sources and systems as if in isolation. A method for construction of CDE boundaries is devised based on moment-generating functions, which includes the large body of results from the theory of effective bandwidths. Solutions for essential sources, channels, and respective coders are derived, including Huffman coding, MPEG video, Rayleigh fading, and hybrid automatic repeat request. Results for tandem channels and for the composition of sources and channels are shown.

    摘要: Raman spectroscopy performed using optical fibers, with excitation at 1064 nm and a dispersive detection scheme, was utilized to measure a selection of unifloral honeys produced in the Italian region of Calabria. The honey samples had three different botanical origins: chestnut, citrus, and acacia. A multivariate processing of the spectroscopic data enabled us to distinguish their botanical origin, and to build predictive models for quantifying important nutraceutic indicators, such as the main sugars and potassium. Furthermore, the Raman spectra of chestnut honeys were compared with the taste profile measured by an electronic tongue: A good correlation to a bitter-savory taste was obtained. This experiment indicates the excellent potential of Raman spectroscopy as a modern analytical tool for the nondestructive and rapid multi-component analysis of food quality indicators.

    摘要: Loneliness is a common condition in older adults and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, decreased sleep quality, and increased risk of cognitive decline. Assessing loneliness in older adults is challenging due to the negative desirability biases associated with being lonely. Thus, it is necessary to develop more objective techniques to assess loneliness in older adults. In this paper, we describe a system to measure loneliness by assessing in-home behavior using wireless motion and contact sensors, phone monitors, and computer software as well as algorithms developed to assess key behaviors of interest. We then present results showing the accuracy of the system in detecting loneliness in a longitudinal study of 16 older adults who agreed to have the sensor platform installed in their own homes for up to 8 months. We show that loneliness is significantly associated with both time out-of-home (β = ?0.88 and p < 0.01) and number of computer sessions (β = 0.78 and p < 0.05). R2 for the model was 0.35. We also show the model’s ability to predict out-of-sample loneliness, demonstrating that the correlation between true loneliness and predicted out-of-sample loneliness is 0.48. When compared with the University of California at Los Angeles loneliness score, the normalized mean absolute error of the predicted loneliness scores was 0.81 and the normalized root mean squared error was 0.91. These results represent first steps toward an unobtrusive, objective method for the prediction of loneliness among older adults, and mark the first time multiple objective behavioral measures that have been related to this key health outcome.

    摘要: We experimentally investigate mutual information and generalized mutual information for coherent optical transmission systems. The impact of the assumed channel distribution on the achievable rate is investigated for distributions in up to four dimensions. Single channel and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission over transmission links with and without inline dispersion compensation are studied. We show that for conventional WDM systems without inline dispersion compensation, a circularly symmetric complex Gaussian distribution is a good approximation of the channel. For other channels, such as with inline dispersion compensation, this is no longer true and gains in the achievable information rate are obtained by considering more sophisticated four-dimensional (4D) distributions. We also show that for nonlinear channels, gains in the achievable information rate can also be achieved by estimating the mean values of the received constellation in four dimensions. The highest gain for such channels is seen for a 4D correlated Gaussian distribution.

  • Solar photovoltaic power output forecasting using machine learning technique

    摘要: Photovoltaic (PV) systems are used around the world to generate solar power. Solar power sources are irregular in nature due to the output power of PV systems being intermittent and depending greatly on environmental factors. These factors include, but are not limited to, irradiance, humidity, PV surface temperature, speed of the wind. Due to uncertainties in the photovoltaic generation, it is critical to precisely envisage the solar power generation. Solar power forecasting is necessary for supply and demand planning in an electric grid. This prediction is highly complex and challenging as solar power generation is weather-dependent and uncontrollable. This paper describes the effects of various environmental parameters on the PV system output. Prediction models based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and regression models are evaluated for selective factors. The selection is done by using the correlation-based feature selection (CSF) and ReliefF techniques. The ANN model outperforms all other techniques that were discussed.

  • A laser pulse impactful on a half-space using the modified TPL Ga??N models

    摘要: this article aims to investigate the wave propagation of generalized thermoelastic half-plane under the effect of thermal loading due to laser pulse with and without energy dissipation. The normal mode method is proposed to solve the problem and get numerical results for the field quantities. The outcomes of the physical quantities have been illustrated graphically and reported to compare the simple Green–Naghdi II and III and their modified single-, dual-, and three-phase-lag models. The graphical outcomes indicate that the different types of Green–Naghdi models with thermal relaxations have great effects on the temperature, displacements, dilatation and stresses.
