  • Precisely Encoded Barcodes Using Tetrapod CdSe/CdS Quantum Dots with a Large Stokes Shift for Multiplexed Detection

    摘要: A serious obstacle to the construction of high-capacity optical barcodes in suspension array technology is energy transfer, which can prompt unpredictable barcode signals, limited barcode numbers, and the need for an unfeasible number of experimental iterations. This work reports an effective and simple way to eliminate energy transfer in multicolor quantum dots (QDs)-encoded microbeads by incorporating tetrapod CdSe/CdS QDs with a large Stokes shift (about 180 nm). Exploiting this unique feature enables the facile realization of a theoretical 7 × 7-1 barcoding matrix combining two colors and seven intensity levels. As such, microbeads containing tetrapod CdSe/CdS QDs are demonstrated to possess a powerful encoding capacity which allows for precise barcode design. The ability of the Shirasu porous glass membrane emulsification method to easily control microbead size facilitates the establishment of a 3D barcode library of 144 distinguishable barcodes, indicating the enormous potential to enable large-scale multiplexed detection. Moreover, when applied for the multiplexed detection of five common allergens, these barcodes exhibit superior detection performance (limit of detection: 0.01–0.02 IU mL?1) for both spiked and patient serum samples. Therefore, this new coding strategy helps to expand barcoding capacity while simultaneously reducing the technical and economic barriers to the optical encoding of microbeads for high-throughput multiplexed detection.

  • Multiplexing THz vortex beams with a single diffractive 3D printed lens

    摘要: We present a novel method for experimentally generating multiplexed THz vortex beams by using a single 3D printed element that combines a set of radially distributed spiral phase plates, and a binary focusing Fresnel lens. With this element we have experimentally demonstrated that THz multiplexing can be tailored to fit within a small space on an optical bench. Results are presented beside numerical simulations, demonstrating the robust nature of the experimental method.

  • Specific Biosensing Using DNA Aptamers and Nanopores

    摘要: The multiplexed biosensing of target molecules with high specificity and accuracy is of fundamental importance in both biological research and medical diagnostics. In this paper, the working range of the recent nanopore-DNA carrier based method is extended by introducing a two-step assay using specific DNA aptamers. A signal translation step allows for binding of the target in physiological conditions before the nanopore measurements. Using protein encoded DNA carriers, the simultaneous detection of three targets spanning several orders of magnitude in molecular weight is demonstrated. The single-molecule method may be integrated into nanopore sensing devices for future applied research and point-of-care applications.

  • An entanglement-based wavelength-multiplexed quantum communication network

    摘要: Quantum key distribution has reached the level of maturity required for deployment in real-world scenarios. It has previously been shown to operate alongside classical communication in the same telecommunication fibre and over long distances in fibre and in free-space links. Despite these advances, the practical applicability of quantum key distribution is curtailed by the fact that most implementations and protocols are limited to two communicating parties. Quantum networks scale the advantages of quantum key distribution protocols to more than two distant users. Here we present a fully connected quantum network architecture in which a single entangled photon source distributes quantum states to many users while minimizing the resources required for each. Further, it does so without sacrificing security or functionality relative to two-party communication schemes. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach using a single source of bipartite polarization entanglement, which is multiplexed into 12 wavelength channels. Six states are then distributed between four users in a fully connected graph using only one fibre and one polarization analysis module per user. Because no adaptations of the entanglement source are required to add users, the network can readily be scaled to a large number of users, without requiring trust in the provider of the source. Unlike previous attempts at multi-user networks, which have been based on active optical switches and therefore limited to some duty cycle, our implementation is fully passive and thus has the potential for unprecedented quantum communication speeds.
