  • Leakage Mitigation in Heterodyne FMCW Radar for Small Drone Detection With Stationary Point Concentration Technique

    摘要: To prevent potential hazards posed by fast-evolving drones, it is of importance to develop a radar system for drone detection. Frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radars are widely used for that purpose. Heterodyne architectures are preferred for them to mitigate dc offset errors. Having said that, FMCW radars suffer from permanent leakage from the transmitter into the receiver. The leakage phase noise raises the total noise floor and limits the radar sensitivity. Here, we propose a stationary point concentration (SPC) technique in order to overcome the challenges. The SPC technique concentrates the leakage phase noise on a stationary point to alleviate the impact of the noise. The technique can be realized using digital signal processing without additional hardware. The results show that the proposed technique significantly lowers the noise floor.

  • On the Possibility of Breaking the Heterodyne Detection Quantum Noise Limit With Cross-Correlation

    摘要: The cross-correlation sensitivity of two identical balanced photodiode heterodyne receivers is characterized. Both the balanced photodiodes receive the same weak signal split up equally, a situation equivalent to an astronomical spatial interferometer. A common local oscillator is also split up equally and its phase difference between both the receivers is stabilized. We show by a semi-classical photon deletion theory that the post-detection laser shot noise contributions on both the receivers must be completely uncorrelated in this case of passing three power splitters. We measured the auto- and cross-correlation outputs as a function of the weak signal power (system noise temperature measurement) and obtained a cross-correlation system noise temperature up to 20 times lower than for the auto-correlation system noise temperature of each receiver separately. This is supported by Allan plot measurements showing cross-correlation standard deviations 30 times lower than in auto-correlation. Careful calibration of the source power shows that the auto-correlation (regular) noise temperature of the single balanced receivers is already very near to the quantum limit as expected, which suggests a cross-correlation system noise temperature below the quantum limit. If validated further, this experimentally clear finding will not only be relevant for astronomical instrumentation but also for other fields, such as telecommunications and medical imaging.

  • INVESTIGATION OF FREQUENCY NOISE AND SPECTRUM LINEWIDTH IN SEMICONDUCTOR OPTICAL AMPLIFIER

    摘要: The characteristics of FM noise and linewidth of semiconductor optical amplifier without facet mirrors were theoretically analyzed and experimentally confirmed. The concept of discrete longitudinal mode for the spontaneous emission was introduced as the basis of quantum mechanical characteristics, allowing the quantitative examination of noise sources. The continuously broaden output spectrum profile of the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) was well explained as a spectrum broadening of each longitudinal mode. We found that the linewidth of the inputted signal light hardly changes by the optical amplification in the SOA. The FM noise increases proportional to square value of the noise frequency and less affected by the electron density fluctuation, the linewidth enhancement factor and the ASE. The higher FM noise in the higher noise frequency is caused by the intrinsic phase fluctuation on the optical emission. The characteristics of the linewidth and the noise frequency dependency were experimentally confirmed.

    摘要: High Step-up converters have numerous applications in renewable energy systems and electric automotive industry. To improve the power density, an interleaved high step-up boost converter with coupled inductor was proposed. However, for practical applications is compulsory that this topology must comply with the CISPR standards. Therefore, to identify the noise sources in the analyzed converter, an equivalent noise modelling is conducted. These models revealed the dependency of inductor windings on different noise sources. For experimental analysis of the conducted emissions of this topology, GaN FETs based prototype is designed. Several tests were carried out to find the effect of various factors on noise emission. As results of tests, 1) Increasing the switching frequency generates increase in the noise spikes 2) Noise emissions from the converter do depend on its mode of operation 3) High peaks of noise are generated at low frequency range by reducing the voltage transition time across the switch.

  • On-line estimation of local oscillator noise and optimisation of servo parameters in atomic clocks

    摘要: For atomic frequency standards in which fluctuations of the local oscillator (LO) frequency are the dominant noise source, we examine the role of the the servo algorithm that predicts and corrects these frequency fluctuations. We derive the optimal linear prediction algorithm, showing how to measure the relevant spectral properties of the noise and optimise servo parameters while the standard is running, using only the atomic error signal. We find that, for realistic LO noise spectra, a conventional integrating servo with a properly chosen gain performs nearly as well as the optimal linear predictor. Using simple analytical models and numerical simulations, we establish optimum probe times as a function of clock atom number and of the dominant noise type in the local oscillator. We calculate the resulting LO-dependent scaling of achievable clock stability with atom number for product states as well as for maximally-correlated states.

    摘要: Non-statistical iterative and statistical iterative reconstruction (SIR) methods establish different models for Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) image reconstruction, which possibly produce different performance outcomes in reconstructed images. This paper presents a method to evaluate the noise and resolution properties of statistical and non-statistical iterative conditions. An algorithms EGSnrc/BEAMnrc Monte Carlo (MC) system was built for generating CBCT projections of a digital water phantom. SIR based OSC-TV (ordered subsets convex via total variation minimization) algorithm was selected to compare with non-statistical ASD-POCS (adaptive steepest descent-projection onto convex sets) algorithm and conventional FDK algorithm. The results demonstrate that ASD-POCS algorithm achieved a higher modulation transfer function than SIR based OSC-TV algorithm at the price of a higher image noise, while OSC-TV algorithm yielded best noise equivalent quanta performance among the three algorithms. The results of our study could guide a better evaluation and optimization of reconstruction algorithms for CBCT imaging.

    摘要: The Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) compensation for Coherent Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (CO-OFDM) system has been studied in this paper. The purpose behind is to investigate the presence of ICI due to the impact of Laser Phase Noise (LPN) and Fiber Non-Linearity (FNL). Thereby, we propose a simple clipping scheme which represents an effective distortion algorithm to decrease the Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) for 4QAM system. The method exhibits a significant process on ICI cancellation in CO-OFDM system. The OFDM signal is basically transmitted along 550km distance rated at 10Gbps single mode fiber for the coherent optical mode. The new findings show that the receiver sensitivity is highly improved below 10-3 FEC for laser power 5dBm; and archives about 1dBm to 2.4dBm when laser power becomes 8dBm at a typical clipping ratio of 0.6. In particular, the system exhibits a good performance over a 385km transmission distance in comparison to the conventional CO-OFDM. As a result, the proposed clipping shows that the system can enhance its the performance by reducing ICI in the CO-OFDM system; in addition to present a high robustness in BER metric against FNL by a clear reduction in PAPR.

    摘要: Analog filters for biomedical signal processing applications deals with very slow or low frequency electrical activities of the physiological signals. This paper proposes first order, second order, fifth order elliptic low pass, second order notch and high pass OTA-C filters using hybrid CMOS-CNFET technology. Carbon Nanotube Field Effect Transistors (CNFETs) and CMOS devises can be heterogeneously integrated on a single 3-D chip to realize important signal processing building blocks such as OTA-C filters. Proposed circuits use Operational Transconductance Amplifier (OTA) as a building block for OTA-C filters. Realized filter circuits satisfy ultra-low power consumption requirement of wearable and implantable biomedical devices. The transistors used in the circuit operate in weak inversion to achieve ultra-low power consumption.

  • Adaptive SVD Domain-Based White Gaussian Noise Level Estimation in Images

    摘要: Noise level estimation is a challenging area of digital image processing with a variety of applications, including image enhancement, image segmentation, and feature extraction. In this paper, an adaptive estimation of additive white Gaussian noise level based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) of images is proposed. The proposed algorithm aims to improve the performance of noise level estimation in the SVD domain at low noise levels. An initial noise level estimate is used to adjust the parameters of the algorithm in order to increase the accuracy of noise level estimation. The proposed algorithm exhibits the ability to adapt the number of considered singular values and to accordingly adjust the slope of a linear function that describes how the average value of the singular value tail varies with noise levels. Although, for each image, the proposed algorithm performs the noise level estimation twice in two distinct stages, the singular value decompositions are only performed in the first stage of the algorithm. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm improves the noise level estimation at low noise levels without a significant increase in computational complexity. At noise level σ = 15, the improvements in the mean square level are about 39% at the expense of slightly higher additional computational time.

    摘要: This paper proposes a new denoising method for hyperspectral images (HSIs) corrupted by mixtures (in a statistical sense) of stripe noise, Gaussian noise, and impulsive noise. The proposed method has three distinctive features: 1) it exploits the intrinsic characteristics of HSIs, namely, low-rank and self-similarity; 2) the observation noise is assumed to be additive and modeled by a mixture of Gaussian (MoG) densities; 3) the inference is performed with an expectation maximization (EM) algorithm, which, in addition to the clean HSI, also estimates the mixture parameters (posterior probability of each mode and variances). Comparisons of the proposed method with state-of-the-art algorithms provide experimental evidence of the effectiveness of the proposed denoising algorithm.
