  • Microelectromechanical system-based, high-finesse, optical fiber Fabry–Perot interferometric pressure sensors

    摘要: A high-finesse, optical fiber, extrinsic Fabry–Perot interferometric (EFPI) pressure sensor based on a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The essential element in the pressure sensor is the high-finesse EFPI cavity that consists of a Pyrex glass wafer, a micromachined silicon wafer, and highly reflective dielectric films. Another Pyrex glass is used for fixing an optical fiber collimator, which allows the realization of the alignment of the incident light. Experimental results show that the proposed sensor exhibits a pressure sensitivity of 1.598 μm/MPa and a high-pressure sensing resolution of 0.002% of the full scale. This sensor is expected to benefit many applications that require high-accuracy pressure measurements, and especially atmospheric pressure applications.

    摘要: A fiber biosensor based on tapered singlemode-no core-singlemode (SNS) fiber structure was investigated for the detection of staphylococcus aureus. The fibre sensor was functionalised by depositing the pig IgG antibodies onto tapered biosensor surface, which has specific binding with staphylococcus aureus. The experimental results showed that transmission spectrum of functionalized sensor undergone wavelength blue shift when it was immersed into Staphylococcus aureus solution, and 1.1 nm wavelength shift was observed with a concentration of 101colony-forming units (CFU)/mL.

  • Impact of H <sub/>2</sub> gas on disruptive birefringence optical fibers with embedded Palladium particles for developing robust sensors

    摘要: Optical fiber sensors of hydrogen gas (H2) are conventionally based on the reaction of a sensitive material deposited on the surface of a fiber. Long-term applications of H2 monitoring require more robust configurations, less sensitive to the degradations of the sensitive layer. To overcome this issue, we develop disruptive polarisation-maintaining optical fibers composed of a sensitive material (Palladium, Pd) integrated into the silica cladding. We present the development of two Panda-type optical fibers with or without embedded Pd particles. These fibers have been fabricated for evaluating, through the measurement of the birefringence, the contribution of Pd particles on the detection of H2 gas. We have specially developed a gas chamber for measuring on-line the detection of H2 during its diffusion into the fiber. Dynamic comparisons between both fibers demonstrate the contribution of Pd particles resulting in a faster response time (of about 20 h for our experimental conditions). These results pave the way to the realization of robust optical fibers with enhanced sensitivity to H2 gas for developing sensing systems compatible with long-term hydrogen monitoring applications in extreme and harsh environments, such as radioactive waste repositories.

  • Radiation-resistant optical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer used for high-temperature sensing

    摘要: An optical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer based on sapphire wafer for high-temperature sensing under Co-60 γ irradiation is designed. The sensing probe is composed by a thin sapphire wafer and a pure silica multi-mode fiber. In the experiment, the interferometer is exposed under the Co-60 γ irradiation with different irradiation time and absorbed dose rate. The irradiated optical fiber sensor underwent three temperature cycle tests up to 800°C and demonstrated excellent sensing performance at high temperature. The whole sensing system has the capability to survive in high temperature environment that surpasses 800°C. The interferometer can achieve the high sensitivity of 29.9 pm/oC at the wavelength around 1340 nm when the temperature is 800°C. The proposed sensor and sensing system has great potential to be applied under strong irradiation and high temperature.

  • Evaluation of Silica Nanofluids in Static and Dynamic Conditions by an Optical Fiber Sensor

    摘要: This work presents an optical fiber dynamic light scattering sensor capable of simultaneously assessing concentration and flow speed of nanofluids. Silica nanoparticles (189 nm) in water were tested, yielding a sensitivity of 0.78288 × 103 s?1 for static conditions. Then, the sensor was submitted to situations that simulate spatial concentration changes, offering better results than those obtained by traditional mathematical models. Finally, in flow tests, the light backscattered by the nanoparticles were collected by a fiber probe placed parallel to the streamline, whereas intensity values were processed by artificial neural networks. The sensor provides average errors of 0.09 wt% and 0.26 cm/s for concentration and speed measurements, respectively, and can be further applied to assess different types of nanofluids and inline processes.

  • High sensitivity temperature sensor based on liquid filled hole-assisted dual-core fiber

    摘要: A high sensitivity temperature sensor is numerically and experimentally investigated in liquid filled eccentric hole-assisted dual-core fiber (EHADCF). The sensor is constructed by cascading two single mode fibers (SMFs) with an intermediate liquid filled EHADCF segment. The light couples periodically between the center and suspended cores due to small core distance. Refractive index (RI) matching liquid with high thermo-optic coefficient is filled into the air-hole of the EHADCF as the cladding of the suspended core. The dispersion curves of the center and suspended cores of the EHADCF change with the temperature, leading to the shift of the resonance peak. The measured temperature sensitivity of the sensor is -562.4 pm/°C. In addition, the stability of the sensor is also measured. Due to high sensitivity, good stability, compact size and large temperature range, the proposed sensor shows promising potentials for temperature sensing in environment monitoring.

  • A High Sensitivity Optical Fiber Interferometer Sensor for Acoustic Emission Detection of Partial Discharge in Power Transformer

    摘要: We propose a Michelson ultrasonic sensing system for detecting the acoustic emission generated by the partial discharge in power transformer. In order to guide the sensor head design in the sensing system for high sensitivity, a theoretical model is established to investigate the effects of the sensor head dimensions on the response sensitivity. After that, an optimized sensor head is designed. In the frequency range from 80 kHz to 200 kHz, whether the PZT sensor is installed in the oil or on the tank, the average response sensitivity of the proposed sensing system is higher than that of the conventional PZT system. When the distance between the sensor head and ultrasonic source is 300 mm in oil, the average detection limit of the Michelson ultrasonic sensing system is about 0.26 Pa, which is about 18.6% of that of the PZT system. Moreover, experiment results show that the detectable partial discharge initial voltage for the proposed optical system is 21.5% lower than that for the PZT system. The enhanced sensitivity makes the Michelson ultrasonic sensing system a potential method to detect the small defects in power transformer.

    摘要: A microfluidic bioreactor was fabricated by curing PDMS over 3D-printed molds, and it contains microchannels and perfusion chambers instrumented with optical fibers for the online analysis of the cellular growth. The channels were designed for allowing both the complete mixture of reagents and the possibility of generation of concentration gradients, and the perfusion chambers are isolated from them by polycarbonate membranes, providing a chemical environment with a constant concentration of nutrients for the cells. The optical fibers are laterally inserted in the chambers, and the monitoring of cells concentration is based on the quasi-elastic light scattering: as the total number of cells grows, there is an increase on the dispersion of the reflected intensity data, and the autocorrelation of the values allows the inference of the concentration. The sensor signals obtained during the fermentation of S. cerevisiae were equivalent to the cell counting on the Neubauer chamber using an optical microscope, leading to a value of the maximum specific growth rate μm of 0.50 h-1. This optical monitoring system has proven to be easily manufacturable and capable of performing fast screening and online monitoring of the microbial kinetics.

  • Long-Sensing-Length Strain Sensor Based on Optical Fiber Fabry-Perot Interferometer with HCF-SMF Structure

    摘要: We proposed and demonstrated an optical fiber Fabry-Perot (F-P) sensor with long sensing length for strain measurement. The structure of the sensor was fabricated with a simple process by splicing a long single mode fiber (SMF) with a short section of hollow-core fiber (HCF). The end of the SMF was cleaved with smooth reflective surface which hence allows the sensing length of the proposed sensor can achieve several centimeters with good visibility. Sensors with different sensing lengths were fabricated and experimentally analyzed in this paper. The relationship between the optical path difference (OPD) of the sensor and strain is found to be linear. With the sensing length of ~10mm and ~49 mm, the sensor can achieve the OPD strain sensitivity of 20.42 nm/ and 115.57 nm/ respectively. Besides, with the sensing length of ~10mm, the OPD temperature sensitivity of the sensor was 187.64 nm/°C. With the advantages of easy making, low cost and long sensing length, it is anticipated that the proposed sensor has great potential in measuring the strain with a large distribution.

  • A High Sensitivity Optical Fiber Sensor for GIS Partial Discharge Detection

    摘要: We propose a high sensitivity optical fiber sensor for detecting the acoustic emission generated by the partial discharge in gas-insulated-switchgear (GIS). A model is established to investigate the effects of the cylinder coil on the sensitivity, the bandwidth and the detection limit. After that, the proposed sensor was modified based on the effects. The average sensitivity of the optimized acoustic emission (AE) optical fiber sensor is 32 dB higher than that of the conventional lead zirconate titanate (PZT) in the frequency range from 20 kHz to 100 kHz. Moreover, experiment results show that the detectable partial discharge initial voltage for the proposed optical system is 17.1 % lower than that for the PZT system, and the amplitude of the signal detected by the proposed optical system is 525 % higher than that detected by the PZT system.
