  • High spectral and spatial resolution observations of the PDR emission in the NGC 2023 reflection nebula with SOFIA and APEX

    摘要: We have mapped the NGC 2023 reflection nebula in [C ii] and CO(11?10) with the heterodyne receiver GREAT on SOFIA and obtained slightly smaller maps in 13CO(3?2), CO(3?2), CO(4?3), CO(6?5), and CO(7?6) with APEX in Chile. We use these data to probe the morphology, kinematics, and physical conditions of the C ii region, which is ionized by FUV radiation from the B2 star HD 37903. The [C ii] emission traces an ellipsoidal shell-like region at a position angle of ~?50?, and is surrounded by a hot molecular shell. In the southeast, where the C ii region expands into a dense, clumpy molecular cloud ridge, we see narrow and strong line emission from high-J CO lines, which comes from a thin, hot molecular shell surrounding the [C ii] emission. The [C ii] lines are broader and show photo evaporating gas flowing into the C ii region. Based on the strength of the [13C ii] F = 2?1 line, the [C ii] line appears to be somewhat optically thick over most of the nebula with an optical depth of a few. We model the physical conditions of the surrounding molecular cloud and the PDR emission using both RADEX and simple PDR models. The temperature of the CO emitting PDR shell is ~90?120 K, with densities of 105?106 cm?3, as deduced from RADEX modeling. Our PDR modeling indicates that the PDR layer where [C ii] emission dominates has somewhat lower densities, 104 to a few times 105 cm?3.

  • A Novel Approach for Diagnosing Diabetic Retinopathy in Fundus Images

    摘要: In recent years the medical profession has seen an ever increasing demand for diagnosis and a permanent cure for illnesses caused by climatic-changes, unwholesome food and environmental pollution. Also the appearances of hitherto unknown viral diseases have caused eye diseases, which have prompted surgeons to monitor the health of the eyes. Potential new therapies that may help in preserving sight in the growing population of diabetic patients into the 21st Century. Early detection of diseases affecting the eyes reduces the risk of permanent damage. Some of the serious conditions which warrant early diagnosis are: Glaucoma, floaters, macula degradation and diabetic retinopathy. In the early stages, a choice of treatment options exist, which dwindles as the disease spreads. A visual inspection of the optic disc, macula and the blood vessels of the eye requires to be done routinely. Diabetic patients run the risk of damage to retinal vessels, which are referred to as diabetic retinopathy. This may further be classified as: Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy and proliferative diabetic retinopathy. In scientific literatures, feature extraction method has been reported for diagnosis and classification. In this study a systematic Decide, Detect, Determine and Do approach for analyzing diabetic retinopathy images has been taken up. The proposed approach gives a clearer picture of the abnormality, its type (NPDR or PDR), its status (viz., mild, moderate or severe) and finally the appropriate treatment.

    摘要: Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is an eye abnormality in which the human retina will get affected and is becoming one of the leading cause of preventable blindness. In the world, it is found that nearly 4.8% of blindness is caused due to DR. Preliminary symptoms include the formation of microaneurysms, exudates and hemorrhages. Early detection of DR can save the vision of diabetes patients and manual diagnosis takes time and effort for confirmation. In this paper, a Computer-aided Automated Diagnosis (CAD) is developed to solve this problem. The proposed approach uses edge-based segmentation method for segmenting the optic disc and blood vessels more accurately than region-based methods, followed by extraction of most probable exudates regions, feature extraction and the classifier stage to detect the presence of exudates. This system achieved sensitivity 82.61%, specificity 92.31% and moreover an accuracy of 87.75% for DIARETDB dataset.
