摘要: Hybrid-cavity of a Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavity and a microcavity with the microcavity as a wavelength selective reflector are reported for realizing single mode semiconductor lasers. Mode coupling between a microcavity mode and a FP mode results in mode Q factor enhancement and stable single mode operation. Furthermore, optical bistability are realized in the hybrid lasers as the unbiased microcavity working as a saturable absorption. Two bistability regions are realized for the hybrid lasers around threshold current and above threshold with mode competition, and all-optical flip-flop is demonstrated.

摘要: In this paper, a single bandpass microwave photonic filter (MPF) based on a gain-switched distributed feedback (DFB) laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Self-phase modulation (SPM) effect is explored the performance of the proposed MPF. A single passband is achieved for the proposed MPF, which can be tuned from 1 GHz to 39 GHz. A theoretical model describing the principle of the proposed MPF is derived, which is confirmed by experimental results.

Precise Photon Correlation Measurement of a Chaotic Laser
摘要: The second order photon correlation g(2)(τ) of a chaotic optical-feedback semiconductor laser is precisely measured using a Hanbury Brown–Twiss interferometer. The accurate g(2)(τ) with non-zero delay time is obtained experimentally from the photon pair time interval distribution through a ninth-order self-convolution correction. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical analysis. The relative error of g(2)(τ) is no more than 5‰ within 50 ns delay time. The bunching effect and coherence time of the chaotic laser are measured via the precise photon correlation technique. This technique provides a new tool to improve the accuracy of g(2)(τ) measurement and boost applications of quantum statistics and correlation.

摘要: An Optical Frequency Comb (OFC) Generator is a laser source emitting a coherent radiation with an equally spaced group of optical frequencies. OFCs have been used in numerous fields, such as optical communications, RF photonics and infrared spectroscopy. Relatively low repetition rate OFCs (100-1000 MHz) are especially suited for dual comb spectroscopic applications. Low repetition rate OFCs from Gain-Switched (GS) semiconductor lasers using sinusoidal excitation have been reported for spectroscopic applications. On the other hand, the generation of ultra-short optical pulses by pulsed excitation GS has been demonstrated, but as far as we know, it has not been used for OFC generation. In this work, we consider pulsed GS in combination with optical injection (OI) to generate low repetition rate OFCs, and we demonstrate a high performance in terms of noise, flatness and bandwidth. The OFC generator is based on a master-slave configuration. The Slave Laser (SL), a Discrete Mode Laser (DML), is driven in GS operation using a combination of two signals: a bias current and a square signal provided by a pulse pattern generator, with different duty cycles and driving conditions. High-resolution spectra were analyzed with a Brillouin Optical Spectrum Analyzer (BOSA).

Wavelength and pump-power dependent nonlinear refraction and absorption in a semiconductor disk laser
摘要: We characterize both nonlinear refraction and absorption in a vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (VECSEL) as a function of pump irradiance over the whole range of lasing wavelengths. We observe an approximately linear decrease in magnitude for both nonlinear refraction and nonlinear absorption with optical pumping when the thermally induced shift of the lasing wavelength is considered. Our results are of particular significance for understanding self-modelocking of VECSELs which might be driven by nonlinear lensing.

High coherence collapse of a hybrid III-V/Si semiconductor laser with a large quality factor
摘要: The high-speed dynamics of a hybrid distributed feedback semiconductor laser heterogeneously integrated onto silicon is experimentally investigated in the presence of external optical feedback. The laser fabrication relies on a proper modal engineering in which light is generated in the III-V material and stored in the low-loss silicon region in order to substantially enhance the quality factor of the cavity resonator. In this work, the hybrid laser is found to be insensitive to parasitic re?ections leading to a 10 Gbps ?oor-free transmission with a power penalty no greater than 1.5 dB at room temperature. As a conclusion, owing to the large quality factor, a high coherence collapse level is unveiled in such laser indicating its vast potential to serve as an alternative solution for the development of isolator-free applications in future photonics integrated circuits. A qualitative interpretation is also provided by linking the standard feedback equations to the quality factor of the resonator.
