    摘要: 5G wireless communication systems promise efficient spectrum utilization, advanced modulation and access techniques, and high data rate. To obtain these requirements, millimeter wave (MMW) signals and subsystems are the most suitable to be used. The Modules and devices, proposed for these networks, are intended to use the efficient capabilities of photonic technologies. In this paper, a photonics-based millimeter wave switch, for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals, is proposed by exploiting the nonlinear effects in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). This includes four wave mixing (FWM), self-phase modulation (SPM) and cross-gain modulation (XGM). A 10 Gbps/16QAM-OFDM signal carried over 30 GHz MMW carrier is considered for signal switching. Moreover, we studied the up- and down- wavelength conversion schemes, in terms of probe and pump signal’s power. Furthermore, we investigate the effects of SOA’s injection current and wavelength spacing between the two injected beams that enable optical single sideband (OSSB) generation and switching. Simulation results show possibility of transmitting and switching OFDM signal with 1×10-3 and 13 % rms symbol error rate (SER) and error vector magnitude (EVM), at -22 dBm received power. The simulation is carried out using Virtual Photonic Integrated (VPI) software.

  • Single-Sideband OFDM Transmission via a Silicon Microring IQ Modulator

    摘要: We experimentally demonstrate the generation of a single-sideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signal using an on-chip silicon photonics microring-based IQ modulator. Over 18 dB sideband suppression ratio is achieved for the wideband OFDM: 15.7 GHz data band and 2.7 GHz guard band. The 31.4 Gb/s signal was transmitted over 20 km of standard single-mode fiber with a bit error rate below the forward error correction threshold. While single-sideband continuous-wave signals have been produced with such hardware, this is the first demonstration of stable data transmission on the single sideband carrier.

  • Bit-interleaved polar coded modulation scheme for high-order QAM encoded DDO-OFDM systems

    摘要: In the paper, a simple generation scheme of the twin-SSB-OFDM signal based on one OFDM transmitter is proposed in the direct-detection optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (DDO-OFDM) system. Compared with traditional generation scheme that requires two OFDM transmitters, it has lower implementation complexity and lower cost. In addition, to enhance the spectral efficiency (SE) for DDO-OFDM system, an efficient bit-interleaved polar coded modulation (BIPCM) scheme adopting 256 quadrature-amplitude modulation (256-QAM) is proposed. Moreover, a quadratic polynomial permutation (QPP) interleaver is adopted for polar coded modulation (PCM) to further improve the overall system performance. The simulation results exhibit that the proposed scheme can achieve more than 4 dB and 5 dB Q-factor improvement compared to the conventional schemes with PCM and without BIPCM, respectively. At the same time, aided by the efficient 256-QAM BIPCM scheme, the receiver sensitivity is improved and the laser linewidth requirement is less strict compared to the conventional schemes.

  • Photonic Mixer Incorporating All-Optical Microwave Frequency Generator Based on Stimulated Brillouin Scattering Using Single Laser Source

    摘要: In this paper, we report the theoretical and experimental implementation of a photonic mixer for Radio-Over-Fiber (RoF) transmission systems, which incorporates an all-optical 10.87 GHz microwave frequency signal generator based on beating laser frequency with its ?rst order Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) frequency shift. A 13GHz Radio Frequency (RF) is down-converted to 2.13 GHz Intermediate Frequency (IF) signal. The proposed system con?guration represents a cost-effective photonic mixer that can be deployed for up and down conversion around 11 GHz in RoF transmission systems. The optically generated microwave signal of 10.87 GHz has a phase noise of ?109 dBc/Hz at 15-MHz offset. The proposed photonic mixer exhibits a Spurious-Free Dynamic Range (SFDR) of 93dB.Hz 2/3. This RoF transmission system con?guration deploys dual parallel Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) Mach Zehnder Modulator as a photonic mixer, and a single laser source as a Brillouin pump and as an optical carrier at the same time. To the best of our knowledge, this type of photonic mixers has not been reported in the literature.
