  • Design and investigation of a dual-layer grating coupler for efficient vertical fiber-chip coupling

    摘要: A novel dual-layer grating coupler was designed for efficient vertical coupling between a single-mode fiber and silicon nanowires, with characteristics of polarization diversity and both wavelength bands of 1.3 and 1.55 μm. Theoretical analysis and two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations were applied to verify the performance of the design. Optimized results show that the coupling efficiencies of a dual-port output of 41% (?3.87 dB) for transverse-electric polarization at 1.56 μm, 32.88% (?4.83 dB) for transverse-magnetic (TM) polarization at 1.58 μm, and 27.06% (?5.68 dB) for TM polarization at 1.32 μm can be achieved. Dual-layer Fabry–Perot resonance was also investigated for high coupling efficiency.

  • Kinetics of pipeline steel corrosion studied by Raman spectroscopy-coupled vertical scanning interferometry

    摘要: The corrosion and degradation of materials, such as pipeline steel, have a strong effect on both the environment and the economy. The quantification of these processes can therefore provide important information needed to manage their impact. In this study, a concept for the characterization and quantification of corrosion is demonstrated on API X70 steel immersed in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Due to the difficulty of quantifying corrosion rates, e.g., through single mean values, a unique system is applied that directly couples Raman spectroscopy with vertical scanning interferometry to assess the physical and chemical aspects of steel corrosion kinetics. Vertical scanning interferometry allows the quantification of the topographical evolution of corrosion product formation and material dissolution in combination with the direct measurements of the respective rates. The Raman spectroscopy provides additional information about the (mineral) phases. Rate variations ranging from uniform corrosion to areas of high pit densities are quantified and analyzed in rate maps and subsequently visualized in rate spectra. The rate distribution is classified into different domains and pitting rates. Thus, a comprehensive quantitative assessment of the characteristic corrosion behavior is discussed.

  • DUAL-BAND DUAL-SENSE CIRCULARLY POLARIZED SLOT ANTENNA WITH AN OPEN-SLOT AND A VERTICAL STUB

    摘要: A new dual-band dual-sense circularly polarized (CP) slot antenna is designed in this paper. The proposed antenna is composed of a rectangle patch and a modi?ed ground plane. By opening a U-shaped open-slot and loading a vertical stub to the ground plane, a dual-sense CP performance is achieved for two frequency bands. A bevel is cut on the patch to improve the impedance matching. The antenna is fabricated on a low-cost FR4 substrate and fed by a coplanar waveguide (CPW) structure. The antenna has been investigated numerically, and a prototype was experimentally measured. Experimental results show that the measured 10-dB return loss impedance bandwidths are 18.3% (2.72–3.27 GHz) for the lower band and 23.7% (4.65–5.90 GHz) for the upper band, and the measured 3-dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidths for the lower and upper bands can be up to 28.4% (2.48–3.30 GHz) and 26.3% (4.63–6.03 GHz), respectively.

  • Second Harmonic Light Manipulation with Vertical Split Ring Resonators

    摘要: The second harmonic generation (SHG) of vertical and planar split-ring resonators (SRRs) that are broken centro-symmetry configurations at the interface of metal surface and air is investigated. Strong interactions, better electromagnetic field confinements, and less leakage into the substrate for vertical SRRs are found. Experimental results show a 2.6-fold enhancement of SHG nonlinearity, which is in good agreement with simulations and calculations. Demonstrations of 3D metastructures and vertical SRRs with strong SHG nonlinearity majorly result from magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole clearly provides potential applications for photonics and sensing.
