  • Applying Fast Scanning Method Coupled with Digital Image Processing Technology as Standard Acquisition Mode for Scanning Electron Microscopy

    摘要: This study proposes an e?cient and fast method of scanning (e.g., television (TV) scan) coupled with digital image processing technology to replace the conventional slow-scan mode as a standard model of acquisition for general-purpose scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM images obtained using the proposed method had the same quality in terms of sharpness and noise as slow-scan images, and it was able to suppress the adverse e?ects of charging in a full-vacuum condition, which is a challenging problem in this area. Two problems needed to be solved in designing the proposed method. One was suitable compensation in image quality using the inverse ?lter based on characteristics of the frequency of a TV-scan image, and the other to devise an accurate technique of image integration (noise suppression), the position alignment of which is robust against noise. This involved using the image montage technique and estimating the number of images needed for the integration. The ?nal result of our TV-scan mode was compared with the slow-scan image as well as the conventional TV-scan image.

  • Simultaneous contribution of saturation in absorption and nonlinear photoacoustic effects in CuTPP under blue laser irradiation

    摘要: The nonlinear optical responses of CuTPP are studied in toluene under the irradiation of a blue laser beam focused using a convergent lens. The z-scan setup is applied in order to determine nonlinear optical responses. Besides the nonlinear absorption response, which indicates reversed saturable absorption, intensity dependence photoacoustic waves are created in both hearable sound and ultrasonic waves. Hearable sound is recorded by a microphone and analyzed by Fourier transform analyzes in order to calculate the sonic frequencies. Because of the high absorption of dye molecules, a dilute solution is prepared to enhance transmittance from the cell to analyze profile of the passing beam. Diffraction rings pattern is observed with about 30 dense rings, in which the number of rings depends on the beam intensity that could be attributed to the higher frequency photoacoustic waves and the corresponding refractive grating induced by the waves. The nonlinear refraction of the solution is a simultaneous contribution of thermal lensing and photoacoustic effects, in addition to the saturation in absorption process which influences the nonlinear absorption behavior. This compound can be proposed as a good candidate in mode locking, Q-switching devises, and short pulse generators where we need a pattern from the activity of the saturable absorber at the cross section of the beam.

  • Structural, spectral and nonlinear optical analysis of Bis(2-methyllactato)borate tetrahydrate: a new nonlinear optical crystal for laser applications

    摘要: A new nonlinear optical crystal, ‘Bis(2-methyllactato)borate tetrahydrate’ (BMBT) has been crystallized by slowly evaporating the solvent. It crystallizes in the space group P21212. Sharp peaks present in powder XRD profile reveals the good crystallinity. Its transmission bandwidth (220 nm – 1100 nm) suggest that it can be used to generate UV radiation upto 220 nm and also in optoelectronic applications. Vibrations of functional groups (B-O, CH3, CO) associated with the crystal structure have been identified through FTIR and FT-Raman spectral studies. OH stretching vibrations have been observed near 3000 cm-1 clearly endorses the existence of water molecule in the BMBT structure. The chemical shifts observed in 1H and 13C NMR spectral results establishes the molecular structure of BMBT crystal. Second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency is obtained as 0.9 times of KDP. The third order nonlinear susceptibility (χ3), nonlinear refractive index (n2) and nonlinear absorption co-efficient (β) were found using Z-scan technique. χ3 of title crystal is found to be 4.16 X10-5 esu. The existence of SHG efficiency and the enhanced χ3 value are due to the hydrogen bonded intermolecular interactions present in the BMBT crystal structure. The observed results suggest that BMBT can be used in Q-switching, mode locking and optical sensors like night vision devices.

  • The Inspection of CFRP Laminate with Subsurface Defects by Laser Arrays Scanning Thermography (LAsST)

    摘要: Laser array scanning thermography (LAsST) was used to detect the subsurface defects of carbon fiber reinforced composite (CFRP). A series of bottom flat hole (BFHs) of CFRP were prepared for LAsST. Truncation pseudo-static matrix reconstruction (TC-PSMR) method was used to reconstruct the thermal response signal. Fast Fourier transform (FFT), principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares regression (PLSR) were used to process the thermal response signals, forming FFT image, PCA image, and PLSR image. The signal noise ratios (SNRs) of defects is calculated, and it is used to evaluate the defect detection ability of different post-processing algorithms. The experimental results show that the image based on FFT phase has a higher signal-to-noise ratio with PLSR image, and the FFT amplitude image and PLSR image can accurately represent the defect size.

  • Giant Ultrafast Optical Nonlinearities of Annealed Sb2Te3 Layers

    摘要: The optimization of thin Sb2Te3 films in order to obtain giant ultrafast optical nonlinearities is reported. The ultrafast nonlinearities of the thin film layers are studied by the Z-scan technique. Giant saturable absorption is obtained, which is the highest ever reported, by means of the Z-scan technique.

    摘要: High-precision localization performance of mobile robots in featureless environments plays an important role in the field of navigation. This paper describes an effective localization solution using a landmark whose surface is covered with two different materials resulting in different laser reflection intensities. Based on the landmark, a feature extraction algorithm is proposed and an improved scan matching method for mobile robot localization in featureless environments is described. Unlike traditional scan matching methods which only use geometric features, the proposed method mixes geometric information extracted from environment and laser reflection intensity extracted from the landmark to achieve accurate pose estimation. Experiments show that our method has higher precision than previous methods.

  • Numerical analysis of the effect of the scan strategy on the residual stress in the multi-laser selective laser melting

    摘要: The inevitably formed residual stress in the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process leads to distortion, crack and even delamination of the workpiece. Single laser is commonly applied during SLM processing. However, its productivity is much lower than multiple lasers. In addition, the research of residual stress with multi-laser condition currently is limited in the open documents. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) thermo-mechanical model, with considerations of temperature dependent properties of Ti-6Al-4V, phase change and convective flow, is developed at first. Then, the numerical results of maximum temperature and dimensions of the molten pool are validated by available experimental data. Furthermore, a parametric study in regards to a series of scan strategies is investigated. According to the simulation results, the residual stress increases significantly when the laser number reaches four. The “two-zone technique” scan strategy decreases the equivalent residual stress by 10.6% compared to the successive scan strategy. With a shortening scan length, the residual stress first increases slightly, then decreases dramatically and attains the minimum when it is a quarter. Furthermore, for the multi-laser SLM process, carefully planning the scanning sequence and the sweeping direction to decrease heat concentration is beneficial in controlling the residual stress.

  • Nonlinear optical properties of colloidal CdSe/ZnS quantum dots in PMMA

    摘要: The colloidal CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) in the PMMA polymer film with different QDs concentrations were fabricated. The influence of QDs concentration and excitation pump energy on nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of PMMA capped CdSe/ZnS QDs was investigated by the Z-scan technique with nanosecond laser pulses in the near-infrared spectral band. A large effective nonlinear absorption coefficient (βeff~?10?13 esu) due to the saturable absorption was observed. It was found that the appropriate concentration could lead to the reinforcement of NLO effect. In addition, the impact of the excitation energy on the nonlinear refractive index n2, real and imaginary parts of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility was also performed. This study involving the light–matter interactions in the colloidal quantum dots will benefit potential NLO-based applications of optoelectronics, optical modulation and photonics.

    摘要: This paper presents one of the first studies of the harmonic impact of a significantly large photovoltaic (PV) solar farm of 20 MW in a utility distribution system. This solar farm is a constituent of the 80-MW PV solar farm in Sarnia, Ontario, which is so far the largest solar farm in Canada. The utility network is modeled in detail using the commercial grade PSCAD/EMTDC software, which is validated through load flow studies conducted by CYME software and correlated with SCADA measurements. The validated network model is used for network resonance study and harmonics impact analysis of the solar farms under different network conditions. The harmonics data instrumented for several months were provided by the transmission utility at the two solar farm units and at the main feeder substation. These data were utilized for extensive harmonic impact studies with widely different short-circuit levels and network resonance conditions. This paper presents the detailed procedure adopted for performing such harmonic impact studies. It is concluded that this large solar farm may not cause any substantial voltage distortion on the distribution network during steady-state operating conditions. However, recommendations are made for utilities to perform such studies to ensure the safe operation of critical loads.

  • Broadband ultrafast nonlinear optical studies revealing exciting multi-photon absorption coefficients in phase pure zero-dimensional Cs <sub/>4</sub> PbBr <sub/>6</sub> perovskite films

    摘要: Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) apart from their overwhelming optoelectronic applications have recently demonstrated promising nonlinear optical (NLO) properties such as strong two-photon absorption cross-sections (~105 GM), two-photon fluorescence, and saturable absorption even at very high peak intensity. Zero-dimensional perovskite-related materials (0-D PRMs) are a new class of materials offering a high exciton binding energy (Eg ≥ 180 meV) with a strong photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield in few cases. Herein, we report the broadband third-order NLO properties of phase pure Cs4PbBr6 0-D PRM achieved using the Z-scan and degenerate four-wave mixing techniques in the femtosecond regime. Considering the growing content of the fluorescent and non-fluorescent forms of this material, we have performed our studies on both of them. These perovskite NCs exhibited strong multi-photon absorption properties in the near-infrared region with two-photon absorption (2PA) (cross-section, σ2 = 10?43–10?44 cm4 s equivalent to ~106 GM) in the 500–800 nm region, three-photon absorption (3PA) (cross-section, σ3 ~10?73 cm6 s2) in the 900–1200 nm region and four-photon absorption (4PA) (cross-section, σ4 ~10?100 cm8 s3) in the 1300–1500 nm spectral region. These multi-photon absorption processes are explained using a simple band diagram. The measured NLO coefficients and cross-sections are fairly large when compared to some of the earlier reports on perovskite-based NCs. Cs4PbBr6 0-D PRM also demonstrated a large third-order NLO susceptibility χ(3) (~10?7 esu), which can be attributed to the strong quantum confinement arising from spatially isolated, exciton containing individual [PbBr6]4? octahedron. These results clearly suggest the potential of 0D-PRMs in applications such as photonics and ultrafast all-optical switching devices.
