  • Sol-gel assisted nano-structured SnO<sub>2</sub> sensor for low concentration ammonia detection at room temperature

    摘要: Sol-gel assisted nano-structured SnO2 sensor for low concentration ammonia detection at room temperature. Upon exposure to 500 ppb and 1 ppm of NH3, sensor manifests appreciable response ~ 28 % and ~ 31.5 %, respectively. High response of the sensor at RT is attributed due to porous nanograins (with average particle size ~ 50 nm) based SnO2 thin film layer. Nanograins structure is obtained due to addition of glycerine in the sol solution, which also leads to porosity enhancement of the sensing layer. Good reproducibility and appreciable immunity to drift behavior are other attributes of the fabricated device. High response and good selectivity towards ammonia are observed with very fast response and recovery time at RT, for extreme low concentrations level ~ 55 % RH for concentration range 500 ppb-500 ppm. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results are used to study the structural, chemical composition, topography and morphological characteristics of the prepared SnO2 thin film, respectively.

    摘要: A low-temperature, wet-chemical process for the synthesis of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) films on large area, transparent, flexible substrates were developed and its application to ammonia detection at room temperature were demonstrated. The carboxyl groups were attached in the sidewalls of carbon nanotubes due to wet-chemical process which helps to improve the sensor performance. The transmittance measurement showed that the film is ninety percent transparent to visible spectrum with respect to air. Selectivity measurements were also performed. The sensor responses were same for both the fat and bend film. The present SWCNTs based sensors could potentially be used to develop low cost, flexible, foldable and disposable sensor system for the monitoring of toxic gases like ammonia in environment.

  • 3D, covalent and noncovalent hybrid materials based on 3-phenylcoumarin derivatives and single walled carbon nanotubes as gas sensing layers

    摘要: In this work, the effect of different types of functionalization of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) with 3-phenylcoumarin derivatives on the chemiresistive sensor response to ammonia (10–50 ppm) was studied. Covalent functionalization of SWCNT was performed according to the Huisgen reaction of azide-alkyne 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between mono alkyne-substituted 3-phenylcoumarin and single walled nanotubes modified by azide groups. Covalent functionalization was shown by IR- and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To obtain the 3D hybrid material, the dialkyne functionalized 3-phenylcoumarin molecules were used as linkers between nanotubes. Third hybrid material was prepared by noncovalent functionalization of SWCNT, namely by adsorption of 7-propinyloxy-3-(p-propinyloxyphenyl)coumarin on SWCNT surface. It was shown that the 3D hybrid and the hybrid obtained by covalent functionalization exhibit 2 and 4 times higher sensor responses to ammonia compared to noncovalently functionalized SWCNT. The value of sensor response is in good correlation with the degree of functionalization of SWCNTs with coumarin molecules.
