  • Vision-based people detection using depth information for social robots

    摘要: Robots are starting to be applied in areas which involve sharing space with humans. In particular, social robots and people will coexist closely because the former are intended to interact with the latter. In this context, it is crucial that robots are aware of the presence of people around them. Traditionally, people detection has been performed using a flow of two-dimensional images. However, in nature, animals’ sight perceives their surroundings using color and depth information. In this work, we present new people detectors that make use of the data provided by depth sensors and red-green-blue images to deal with the characteristics of human–robot interaction scenarios. These people detectors are based on previous works using two-dimensional images and existing people detectors from different areas. The disparity of the input and output data used by these types of algorithms usually complicates their integration into robot control architectures. We propose a common interface that can be used by any people detector, resulting in numerous advantages. Several people detectors using depth information and the common interface have been implemented and evaluated. The results show a great diversity among the different algorithms. Each one has a particular domain of use, which is reflected in the results. A clever combination of several algorithms appears as a promising solution to achieve a flexible, reliable people detector.

  • Third-Order Unitary Coupled Cluster (UCC3) for Excited Electronic States: Efficient Implementation and Benchmarking

    摘要: The efficient implementation of the third-order unitary coupled-cluster scheme (UCC3) for the calculation of excited electronic states is reported. The UCC3 scheme and its second-order UCC2 variant have been benchmarked and compared to Jacquemin’s recently introduced as well as Thiel’s well-established benchmark sets for excitation energies and oscillator strengths. For the latter, the calculation of 134 excited singlet and 71 excited triplet states of 28 small to medium-sized organic molecules has revealed that UCC2 exhibits a mean error and standard deviation of 0.36 ± 0.41 eV for singlet states and 0.22 ± 0.21 eV for triplet states, whereas UCC3 revealed an accuracy of 0.06 ± 0.27 eV for singlet and ?0.22 ± 0.15 eV for triplet states. Additionally, the oscillator strengths obtained with effective transition moments correct through second order in perturbation theory are in very good agreement with literature data.

    摘要: In this short paper, we propose a powerful new tool for conducting research on computational intelligence and games. “PyVGDL” is a simple, high-level, extensible description language for 2-D video games. It is based on defining locations and dynamics for simple building blocks (objects), together with local interaction effects. A rich ontology defines various controllers, object behaviors, passive effects (physics), and collision effects. It can be used to quickly design games, without having to deal with control structures. We show how the dynamics of many classical games can be generated from a few lines of PyVGDL. Furthermore, the accompanying software library permits parsing and instantly playing those games, visualized from a bird’s-eye or first-person viewpoint, and using them as benchmarks for learning algorithms.

    摘要: The focus of most research in evolutionary dynamic optimization has been tracking moving optimum (TMO). Yet, TMO does not capture all the characteristics of real-world dynamic optimization problems (DOPs), especially in situations where a solution’s future ?tness has to be considered. To account for a solution’s future ?tness explicitly, we propose to ?nd robust solutions to DOPs, which are formulated as the robust optimization over time (ROOT) problem. In this paper we analyze two robustness de?nitions in ROOT and then develop two types of benchmark problems for the two robustness de?nitions in ROOT, respectively. The two types of benchmark problems are motivated by the inappropriateness of existing DOP benchmarks for the study of ROOT. Additionally, we evaluate four representative methods from the literature on our proposed ROOT benchmarks, in order to gain a better understanding of ROOT problems and their relationship to more popular TMO problems. The experimental results are analyzed, which show the strengths and weaknesses of different methods in solving ROOT problems with different dynamics. In particular, the real challenges of ROOT problems have been revealed for the ?rst time by the experimental results on our proposed ROOT benchmarks.

  • Benchmarking of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Machines

    摘要: This paper presents the methodology and results of an extensive benchmarking of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) machines conducted across five top machine producers and two end users. The objective was to understand the influence of the individual machine on the final quality of predesigned specimens, given a specific material and from multiple perspectives, in order to assess the current capabilities and limitations of the technology and compare them with the capabilities of an 11-year-old machine belonging to one of the end users participating in this investigation. The collected results give a clear representation of the status of LPBF technology considering its maturity in terms of process capabilities and potential applications in a production environment.

    摘要: Image registration is a common task for many biomedical analysis applications. The present work focuses on the benchmarking of registration methods on differently stained histological slides. This is a challenging task due to the differences in the appearance model, the repetitive texture of the details and the large image size, between other issues. Our benchmarking data is composed of 616 image pairs at two different scales—average image diagonal 2.4k and 5k pixels. We compare eleven fully automatic registration methods covering the widely used similarity measures (and optimization strategies with both linear and elastic transformation). For each method, the best parameter configuration is found and subsequently applied to all the image pairs. The performance of the algorithms is evaluated from several perspectives—the registration (in)accuracy on manually annotated landmarks, the method robustness and its processing computation time.
