    摘要: This paper considers cell-free and user-centric approaches for coverage improvement in wireless cellular systems operating at millimeter wave frequencies, and proposes downlink power control algorithms aimed at maximizing the global energy efficiency. To tackle the non-convexity of the problems, an interaction between sequential and alternating optimization is considered. The use of hybrid analog/digital beamformers is also taken into account. The numerical results show the benefits obtained from the power control algorithm, as well as that the user-centric approach generally outperforms the cell-free one.

  • Retinal Ganglion Cell Layer Thinning Within One Month of Presentation for Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy

    摘要: Optical coherence tomography reveals retinal ganglion cell layer (GCL) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning in chronic optic nerve injury. With acute optic nerve injury, as in acute nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), swelling obscures early demonstration of RNFL thinning, which might be used to evaluate therapies. We hypothesized that measurement of GCL plus inner plexiform layer (IPL) thickness and trajectory of thinning would show it is an earlier and more accurate biomarker of early permanent neuronal injury.

  • Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography Features in Open-Angle Glaucoma With Diabetes Mellitus and Inadequate Glycemic Control

    摘要: PURPOSE. To evaluate spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) features according to glycemic control status in open-angle glaucoma with diabetes mellitus. METHODS. Subjects underwent comprehensive ocular examination, visual ?eld testing, and SD-OCT imaging (Cirrus HD-OCT). The relationship between glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and OCT measurements was compared between diabetic nonglaucomatous eyes and diabetic glaucomatous eyes. Glaucoma-discriminating ability was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) for OCT parameters and compared between groups relative to the glycemic control group. RESULTS. Analysis was performed on 69 nonglaucomatous and 87 glaucomatous eyes in the nondiabetic group, and on 72 nonglaucomatous and 56 glaucomatous eyes in the diabetic group. Average, inferonasal, inferior, and inferotemporal ganglion cell–inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thicknesses were positively correlated with HbA1c in diabetic nonglaucomatous eyes (P ? 0.040, 0.037, 0.025, and 0.013, respectively). The AUC of the average cup-to-disc area ratio (CDR), vertical CDR, and cup volume in diabetic eyes with poor glycemic control was signi?cantly higher than those in nondiabetic eyes (P ? 0.011, 0.003, and 0.043, respectively). The AUC of cube volume, cube average thickness, and minimal GCIPL thickness in diabetic eyes with poor glycemic control was lower than those in nondiabetic eyes (P ? 0.006, 0.007, and 0.004, respectively). CONCLUSIONS. In this study, optic nerve head parameters had a superior ability to discriminate glaucoma in diabetic eyes with poor glycemic control. Conversely, the ability to discriminate glaucoma using macular parameters tended to be lower for diabetic eyes with inadequate glycemic control.

  • Automated Cell Selection Using Support Vector Machine for Application to Spectral Nanocytology

    摘要: Partial wave spectroscopy (PWS) enables quantification of the statistical properties of cell structures at the nanoscale, which has been used to identify patients harboring premalignant tumors by interrogating easily accessible sites distant from location of the lesion. Due to its high sensitivity, cells that are well preserved need to be selected from the smear images for further analysis. To date, such cell selection has been done manually. This is time-consuming, is labor-intensive, is vulnerable to bias, and has considerable inter- and intraoperator variability. In this study, we developed a classification scheme to identify and remove the corrupted cells or debris that are of no diagnostic value from raw smear images. The slide of smear sample is digitized by acquiring and stitching low-magnification transmission. Objects are then extracted from these images through segmentation algorithms. A training-set is created by manually classifying objects as suitable or unsuitable. A feature-set is created by quantifying a large number of features for each object. The training-set and feature-set are used to train a selection algorithm using Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers. We show that the selection algorithm achieves an error rate of 93% with a sensitivity of 95%.

  • The Role of Endogenous Neuroprotective Mechanisms in the Prevention of Retinal Ganglion Cells Degeneration

    摘要: Retinal neurons are not able to undergo spontaneous regeneration in response to damage. A variety of stressors, i.e., UV radiation, high temperature, ischemia, allergens, and others, induce reactive oxygen species production, resulting in consecutive alteration of stress-response gene expression and finally can lead to cell apoptosis. Neurons have developed their own endogenous cellular protective systems. Some of them are preventing cell death and others are allowing functional recovery after injury. The high efficiency of these mechanisms is crucial for cell survival. In this review we focus on the contribution of the most recently studied endogenous neuroprotective factors involved in retinal ganglion cell (RGC) survival, among which, neurotrophic factors and their signaling pathways, processes regulating the redox status, and different pathways regulating cell death are the most important. Additionally, we summarize currently ongoing clinical trials for therapies for RGC degeneration and optic neuropathies, including glaucoma. Knowledge of the endogenous cellular protective mechanisms may help in the development of effective therapies and potential novel therapeutic targets in order to achieve progress in the treatment of retinal and optic nerve diseases.

  • Performance of Fluorescent Cell-Labeling Dyes under Simulated Europa Mission Radiation Doses

    摘要: We investigated the performance of several commonly used fluorescent dyes after exposure to a simulated Europa mission total ionizing radiation dose of 300 krad (3 kGy) applied using a 60Co source. Dyes irradiated in aqueous solution or as lyophilized powders were evaluated for absorbance and emission spectra, quantum yield, and where appropriate, ability to label cells or nucleic acids. Although some dyes showed significant increase or decrease in quantum yield with the dose, their spectra and cell-labeling properties remained essentially unchanged after irradiation in powder form. Irradiation in aqueous solution led to significantly greater changes, including a large blue shift in the DNA intercalator propidium iodide. These results suggest that many fluorescent probes are appropriate for use in astrobiological missions to Europa, but that SYTO9 and propidium iodide should be used with caution or not mixed with each other, as is commonly done in "Live/Dead" labeling applications.

    摘要: This paper describes the design and demonstration of planar transmit-arrays operating in X-band with 1-bit phase quantization and based on wideband high efficiency unit cells. The unit cell consists of two identical square patch antennas loaded by C-loop slots and interconnected in their centers by a metalized via hole. The proposed transmit-array achieves a maximum directivity of 25.1 dBi and a gain of 22.8 dBi. Radiation efficiency of 56.3% is also obtained with a 1-dB gain bandwidth of up to 9.2% around 9.85 GHz and very low cross-polarization levels. The beam-steering up to 30° is achieved by tilting the focal source.

  • Optical sectioning in multifoci Raman hyperspectral imaging

    摘要: In this study, we compared the depth discrimination and speed performance of multifoci Raman hyperspectral imaging with the reference standard of a single laser point confocal Raman mapping. A liquid crystal spatial light modulator was employed for the generation of multifoci laser beams, and a digital micromirror device was used as a software‐configurable reflective pinhole array. The patterns of the laser foci and pinhole array can be rapidly changed without requiring any hardware alterations. Confocal patterns with different distance‐to‐size ratios were tested and compared. After optimization of the laser‐foci pattern, we demonstrated the feasibility of multifoci Raman hyperspectral microscopy for recording depth‐resolved molecular maps of biological cells (Acanthamoeba castellanii trophozoites). Micrometric depth discrimination and short acquisition times (20 min for single plane confocal image) were achieved.

  • Fluorescence imaging of invasive head and neck carcinoma cells with integrin αvβ6-targeting RGD-peptides: an approach to a fluorescence-assisted intraoperative cytological assessment of bony resection margins

    摘要: We assessed the use of peptides containing arginylglycylaspartic acid (RGD) that target integrin (cid:2)v(cid:3)6 as a potential approach for a fluorescence-assisted intraoperative cytological assessment of bony resection margins (F-AICAB) in patients who had bone-infiltrating squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the head and neck. This was assessed to demarcate invasive carcinoma cells that stained for (cid:2)v(cid:3)6. Specimens from bony resection margins (n=362) were defined as either malignant or benign according to the results of cytological and histological examinations. Integrin (cid:2)v(cid:3)6-targeting fluorescence-labelled RGD peptides were added to the cytological samples and the accuracy of the resulting signal assessed by comparing it with the cytological findings. The value of F-AICAB was evaluated to find out if it could help to improve future diagnoses, tests, and treatments. Integrin (cid:2)v(cid:3)6 was strongly expressed in invasive SCC cells and qualified as a marker for bone-infiltrating carcinoma cells. It showed a high affinity to bind to invasive SCC cells and enabled swift and specific demarcation of (cid:2)v(cid:3)6-stained carcinoma cells. It was also diagnostic, with a sensitivity of 100% (95% CI 81.3% to 99.3%), specificity of 98.3% (95% CI 94.4% to 99.0%), positive predictive value of 92% (95% CI 70.2% to 94.3%), and negative predictive value of 100% (95% CI 96.9% to 99.9%), compared with the cytological findings. The targeting of specific integrin subtypes with selective, synthetic ligands, adapted for multimodal imaging, is a promising new approach to diagnosis. Further studies are necessary to provide more evidence for successful clinical translation and to establish the impact on clinical procedures.
