  • Fabrication of rhodanine self-assembled monolayer thin films on copper: Solvent optimization and corrosion inhibition studies

    摘要: Rhodanine self-assembled monolayer (Rh-SAM) films were prepared on copper specimens in different solvents. The assembled films were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and contact angle measurements. The inhibition efficiency of the films against copper corrosion in 3.5% NaCl solution was studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potantodynamic polarization (PP) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) techniques. It was found that very well-ordered and almost homogenously distributed Rh-SAM films were assembled on the copper surface. The appearance, electrochemical and physical properties of the films were depending on preparation conditions. The SAM films reduce greatly the corrosion rate of copper in 3.5% NaCl solution. Their protection ability depends on the type of solvent. The best film for this aim was obtained in 10 mM Rh after 24 h film formation time when methanol was used as solvent. The high corrosion protection ability of the films was assigned to the formation of a compact and protective structure over the copper surface. Assembling SAM films of this healthy compound and their application for corrosion protection has not been reported yet and is very original.

  • Light Metals 2016 (TMS/Light) || SiC in Electrolysis Pots: An Update

    摘要: This update reviews recent results of physical and chemical testing of Si3N4-bonded SiC sidelining material for aluminium electrolysis pots, as well as the corrosion mechanisms of SiC materials under electrolysis conditions. New test methods have been developed to show how these materials perform in a harsh operating environment. The attack by low temperature bath was tested on SiC bricks, also with SiAlON and N-SiC as binder phase. Reverse reactive sintering has become an important manufacturing process for Si3N4-bonded SiC sidelining material This review updates [1, 2].

  • Surface micro-structuring of type 304 stainless steel by femtosecond pulsed laser: effect on surface wettability and corrosion resistance

    摘要: This paper presents results on femtosecond (fs) pulsed laser-based surface micro-structuring of type 304 stainless steel (304 SS). Post laser treatment surface wettability and corrosion resistance investigation are reported. SS sample surfaces have been micro-structured using a typical laser fluence of ~ 0.9 J/cm2 for varying sample scanning speed in the range 25–1000 μm/s. Dense array of micro-protrusions have been generated without formation of a crater for an optimized target scan speed exceeding 200 μm/s. Static water contact angle (WCA) measurement indicated super-hydrophilic behavior immediately after laser treatment. However, hydrophilicity (wettability) was found to decrease with storage time with sample becoming highly hydrophobic (WCA: 144° ± 5°) within 50 days after laser treatment. Corrosion resistance of the laser-treated samples was measured by potentio-dynamic polarization technique. Fs laser micro-structured SS has shown poorer corrosion resistance in comparison to pristine surface. Observed poorer corrosion resistance of laser-treated surface has been explained on the basis of surface chemical composition and surface roughness. The results demonstrated that corrosion resistance increased with increasing hydrophobicity of the SS surface.

  • High-rate deposition of silicon films in a magnetron discharge with liquid target

    摘要: Silicon coatings have been deposited on substrates made of low-carbon and high-carbon steels and tungsten in a magnetron discharge with liquid target at substrate bias voltages ranging from +100 V to -600 V. The structure of obtained coatings was examined by a scanning electron microscopy. The strong influence of substrate bias voltage on the coating structure was observed. The corrosion resistance of coated steel samples was examined in concentrated sulphuric, hydrochloric and nitric acids and their solutions. The resistance of coated tungsten samples against high-temperature oxidation was examined by their exposure to O2 gas at a pressure of 0.2 Pa and a temperature of 1073 K. The coatings deposited under bias voltages of +100 V and -600 V had dense structures and showed the best protective properties among all deposited coatings.

  • Formation and properties of a Zr-based amorphous coating by laser cladding

    摘要: (Zr0.53Al0.1Ni0.05Cu0.3Ti0.02)99Y1 (at%) coating with amorphous layer of about 180 lm thick was prepared on a steel substrate by using laser cladding method. The coating is compact and shows good metallurgical bonding with substrate. The microstructure, microhardness and corrosion behavior along the depth from the coating surface to the substrate were investigated. It is found that a gradient structure consisted of amorphous surface layer, amorphous–crystalline transitional layer and substrate is formed after the laser cladding. The microhardness and corrosion behavior exhibit variation with the microstructural evolution at different depths from the coating surface. The microhardness and corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution of the amorphous surface layer are comparable to those of the as-cast Zr-based BMG with the same composition, and higher than those of the steel substrate.

  • Increased yield of MoS <sub/>2</sub> monolayer exfoliation through the bimetallic corrosion of aluminum

    摘要: In this paper, we propose a corrosion assisted exfoliation method as an improvement to the traditional tape exfoliation to obtain transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers. Our method primarily relies on the electrochemical potential difference between transition metals and aluminum. The assistance of bubbles resulting from the bimetallic corrosion increases the yield of the exfoliation process for monolayers by 30-fold while boosting the probability of obtaining isolated monolayers. We use Raman measurements and a statistical comparison of the improved method with tape exfoliation to lay the evidence for our findings.

  • Low-Temperature CVD Graphene Nanostructures on Cu and Their Corrosion Properties

    摘要: Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene is reported to effectively prevent the penetration of outer factors and insulate the underneath metals, hence achieving an anticorrosion purpose. However, there is little knowledge about their characteristics and corresponding corrosion properties, especially for those prepared under different parameters at low temperatures. Using electron cyclotron resonance chemical vapor deposition (ECR-CVD), we can successfully prepare graphene nanostructures on copper (Cu) at temperatures lower than 600 ?C. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization measurements were used to characterize these samples. In simulated seawater, i.e., 3.5 wt.% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution, the corrosion current density of one graphene-coated Cu fabricated at 400 ?C can be 1.16 × 10?5 A/cm2, which is one order of magnitude lower than that of pure Cu. Moreover, the existence of tall graphene nanowalls was found not to be beneficial to the protection as a consequence of their layered orientation. These correlations among the morphology, structure, and corrosion properties of graphene nanostructures were investigated in this study. Therefore, the enhanced corrosion resistance in selected cases suggests that the low-temperature CVD graphene under appropriate conditions would be able to protect metal substrates against corrosion.

  • Feasibility of Distributed Fiber Optic Sensor for Corrosion Monitoring of Steel Bars in Reinforced Concrete

    摘要: This study investigates the feasibility of distributed fiber optic sensor for corrosion monitoring of steel bars embedded in concrete. Two sensor installation methods are compared: (1) attaching the sensor along the bar and (2) winding the sensor on the bar. For the second method, optical fibers were winded spirally on steel bars with different spacings: 0 mm, 2 mm, 5 mm, and 10 mm. Steel bar pull-out testing was conducted to evaluate the effect of presence of distributed sensor on the bond strength of steel–concrete interface. Electrochemical testing was carried out to assess the influence of the installation methods on the corrosion resistance of the reinforced concrete. Winding the optical fiber on steel bars with a 10-mm spacing does not affect the bond strength and corrosion resistance and allows real-time corrosion monitoring. The distributed sensor data can be used to estimate the corrosion induced steel loss and predict concrete cracking.

    摘要: As a common problem of LED failure, the sulfur corrosion that can cause the LED luminous flux reduced, LED color temperature drifted, in the most severe cases, LED damaged. The sulfur corrosion of LED which affected the reliability of LED was always the focus of research. In this paper, the general analysis methods about the LED sulfur corrosion were clearly elaborated. The SEM&EDS, TOF-SIMS and AES were applied, which provided new methods to analysis the sulfur corrosion. Meanwhile, the corrosion path was discussed. Then, how to avoiding the sulfur corrosion of LED was also suggested.

  • Effect of Ti substitution on the hardness and electrochemical property of laser clad Zr-Al-Co (Ti) amorphous-nanocrystalline coating

    摘要: Zr60-xAl15Co25Tix (x = 0, 5, 10, and 15 at%) coatings were fabricated on Q235 steel by laser cladding. The influence of Ti substitution on the properties of the coated specimens was evaluated in terms of microstructure, hardness, and corrosion resistance. Results show that the coating exhibited a sound metallurgical bonding to the substrate. The cladding layer composed of amorphous and nanocrystalline phases led to increased hardness and enhanced corrosion resistance compared with the substrate. Microhardness values of the coatings increased with the substitution of Ti for Zr attributing to the higher content of ZrO2 while lower content of amorphous phase. Both the corrosion potential and corrosion current density show that appropriate addition of Ti (5 at%) can further improve the corrosion resistance. The results offer a better understanding of the development and application of Zr-based amorphous coating for corrosive environment.
