  • Stacked Nanoporous Anodic Alumina Gradient-Index Filters with Tunable Multispectral Photonic Stopbands as Sensing Platforms

    摘要: This study presents the development and optical engineering of stacked nanoporous anodic alumina gradient-index (NAA-GIFs) filters with tunable multi-spectral photonic stopbands for sensing applications. The structure of these photonic crystal (PC) is formed by stacked layers of NAA produced with sinusoidally modified effective medium. The progressive modification of the sinusoidal period during the anodization process enables the generation and precise tuning of the characteristic photonic stopbands (PSB) (i.e. one per sinusoidal period in the anodization profile) of these PC structures. Four types of NAA-GIFs featuring three distinctive PSBs positioned within the visible spectral region are developed. The sensitivity of the effective medium of these NAA-GIFs is systematically assessed by measuring spectral shifts in the characteristic PSBs upon infiltration of their nanoporous structure with analytical solutions of D-glucose with several concentrations (0.025 – 1 M). This study provides new insights into the intrinsic relationship between the nanoporous architecture of these PCs and their optical properties, generating opportunities to fabricate advanced optical sensing systems for high-throughput and multiplexed detection of analytes in a single sensing platform.

  • Graded-Index Fluoropolymer Antireflection Coatings for Invisible Plastic Optics

    摘要: Plastic optics are used in an ever-expanding range of applications and yet a durable, high performance antireflection (AR) coating remains elusive for this material class. Here, we introduce a sacrificial porogen approach to produce ultralow refractive index nanoporous fluoropolymer AR coatings via thermal co-evaporation of Teflon AF and the small molecule N,N′-Bis(3-methylphenyl)-N,N′-diphenylbenzidine (NPD). Using this approach, we demonstrate a five-layer, step-graded AR coating that reduces the solar spectrum-averaged (400 < λ < 2000 nm) reflectance of acrylic plastic to <0.5% for incidence angles up to 40° and withstands over three months of outdoor rooftop exposure with minimal degradation. A trilayer coating optimized for the visible range yields luminous reflectivity down to ~0.1%, effectively rendering double-side coated acrylic plastic invisible under room lighting conditions. Strong adhesion to most optical plastics, an outstanding combination of mechanical, chemical, and environmental durability, and compatibility with commercial vacuum coating systems should enable this AR technology to find widespread practical use.

  • Adaptability analysis of radiative transport diffusion approximation in planar-graded-index media

    摘要: To study the applicability of diffusion approximation method, the influence of the optical thickness, scattering albedo, and wall emissivity of the examined medium on the accuracy of the diffusion approximation is analyzed. The accuracy is determined by comparison with results obtained by using the Monte Carlo method. By calculating the dimensionless radiation heat flux distributions at the bottom of the medium for various parameter combinations, the influence of each optical parameter is analyzed. In addition, the adaptability of the diffusion approximation method to the case of a gradient-index medium is examined. The results show that in the homogeneous-refractive-index medium and the gradient-index medium, the accuracy of diffusion approximation method is improved by an increase in the optical thickness or the scattering albedo and by a decrease in the wall emissivity. Moreover, the maximum relative errors are primarily distributed at the medium boundary and center. In the case of increased optical thickness or decreased wall emissivity, the error of the diffusion approximation method becomes stable and remains at a small value.

  • Comprehensive optical design model of the goldfish eye and quantitative simulation of the consequences on the accommodation mechanism

    摘要: To further extent our understanding of aquatic vision, we introduce a complete optical model of a goldfish eye, which comprises all important optical parameters for the first time. Especially a spherical gradient index structure for the crystalline lens was included, thus allowing a detailed analysis of image quality, regarding spot size, and wavelength dependent aberration. The simulation results show, that our realistic eye model generates a sufficient image quality, with a spot radius of 4.9 μm which is below the inter cone distance of 5.5 μm. Furthermore, we optically simulate potential mechanical processes of accommodation and compare the results with contradictory findings of previous experimental studies. The quantitative simulation of the accommodation capacity shows that the depth of field is strongly dependent on the resting position and becomes significantly smaller when shorter resting positions are assumed. That means, to enable an extended depth perception with high acuity for the goldfish an adaptive, lens shifting mechanism would be required. In addition, our model allows a clear prediction of the expected axial lens-shift, which is necessary to ensure a sufficient resolution over a large object range.

  • Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves through an Invisible Gradient-Index Lens with Negative Refractive Index

    摘要: A radially inhomogeneous (gradient-index) lens made of material with a negative refractive index, invisible from the viewpoint of geometrical optics, is proposed and designed. The design includes derivation and solution of an equation for determining the refractive index profile, as well as derivation of an expression allowing calculation of the ray trajectories in the lens. Propagation of a plane wave through a cylindrical modification of the proposed lens both for the case of E-polarization and for the case of H-polarization is analyzed numerically using the hybrid projection method. The results obtained for the RCS of the lens are compared to the similar performance of a positive-index lens described in the previous publications.

  • Robust Optimization of Nanoslit Array Sensor Based on Extraordinary Optical Transmission

    摘要: A robust optimization approach for plasmonic periodic array sensor based on extraordinary optical transmission is proposed using Kriging surrogate models to reduce the effects of uncertainty in various manufacturing processes while maintaining sensor performance. For systematic design with reasonable computation cost, the author adopt the universal Kriging models whose regression function is a polynomial. The gradient index and the multiobjective genetic algorithm are chosen as a robustness measure and a global optimization tool, respectively. The figure of merit and the gradient index are set as two objective functions, and the design variables are the slit width and height, respectively. The optical properties of interest are investigated using the finite-element method. The numerical optimization results show the proposed scheme to be powerful and efficient in designing nanoslity array sensors based on extraordinary optical transmission with fabrication uncertainty.

    摘要: Metasurfaces are the subject of intensive research in several applicative areas. The concept of anomalous re?ection has for instance been proposed to demonstrate retrodirectivity. Retrodirectivity can be very attractive feature particularly for radar applications at microwave and millimeter wave frequencies where the enhancement of the radar cross-section of poorly scaterring targets is desirable. In this paper, the design of a retrodirective metasurface operating at multiple incident angles is proposed. It is based on the principle of introducing several super-cells; each supercell being designed according to the generalized Snells law of re?ection thus retro-re?ecting an incoming wave at a speci?c desired angle with high ef?ciency. Angles of incidence ranging from 10? to 30? have been considered. Based on these designs, a novel retrodirective metasurface is proposed such that multiple incident angles are simultaneously addressed. To highlight the applicative potential of this metasurface for RCS enhancement, particularly at large incident angles, a comparison is presented between the RCS of this novel retrodirective metasurface and a conventional metallic corner dihedral. Although the RCS in the angular range -10? to 10? is lower compared with respect to the corner dihedral, a gain of up to 50 dB of monostatic RCS is obtained between -30? to -20? and 20? to 30?. First measurements results for the validation of simulation results for an incident plane wave at 30? are presented.
