  • Glass-forming derivatives of 2-cyano-2-(4H-pyran-4-ylidene) acetate for light-amplification systems

    摘要: A series of 2-cyano-2-(4H-pyran-4-ylidene) acetate derivatives with triphenyl and 9H-carbazole moieties were synthesized and investigated, mostly for potential applications in organic solid state lasers. Synthesized compounds show remarkable amorphous film formation ability, tunable thermal properties (thermal stability varies from 190 °C to 387 °C and glass transition temperature from 94 °C up to 141 °C) with light absorption from 400 nm to 600 nm and photoluminescence from 600 nm up to 800 nm. Dyes with incorporated mono-styryl-electron donating fragment (KTB, KTBC and KTB3K) showed higher photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) (from 16% up to 23%), significantly lower amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) excitation threshold values (24–52 μJ/cm2) in pure thin films comparing to bis-styryl- electron donating fragment containing molecules (Bis-K4C, Bis-K5C and Bis-K4CK) with PLQY of 5–7% and ASE excitation threshold between 165 and 223 μJ/cm2. Some of the investigated KTB-type laser dyes could be perspective materials for organic lasers as well as for laser technology investigation and applications.

  • A series of aromatric-amine-cored fluorescent emitters for amplified spontaneous laser emission and emission turn-on sensing

    摘要: In this paper, five boron dipyrromethene dyes were designed with aromatric-amine-cored structure. Their molecular structure and photophysical performance were discussed in detail in various solvents. It was found that these five dyes were highly fluorescent ones in toluene with emission quantum yield higher than 95%. Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) performance of these fluorescent dyes was then analyzed in toluene. Efficient and promising ASE spectra peaking at ~545 nm were observed for four of these fluorescent dyes with full width at half maximum value of ~5 nm and ASE efficiency up to 9%. It was confirmed that aromatric-amine-cored structure was positive to improve ASE performance. The reason for ASE missing in one of these fluorescent dyes was revealed as the vibrational relaxation of its N-H group. In solvent MeCN, however, this dye showed an interesting phenomenon, emission turn on effect towards Hg(II). Its sensing performance and sensing mechanism were discussed in detail as well. Good linear response and high selectivity were found for both colorimetric sensing and emission turn on sensing.

  • BCl3-Activated Synthesis of COO-BODIPY Laser Dyes: General Scope and High Yields under Mild Conditions

    摘要: A general and straightforward method for the synthesis of COO-BODIPYs from F-BODIPYs and carboxylic acids is established. The method is based on the use of boron trichloride to activate the involved substitution of fluorine, which leads to high yields through rapid reactions under soft conditions. This mild method opens the way to unprecedented laser dyes with outstanding efficiencies and photostabilities, which are difficult to obtain by the current methods.

  • Photochemistry and Photophysics - Fundamentals to Applications || Tailoring the Photophysical Signatures of BODIPY Dyes: Toward Fluorescence Standards across the Visible Spectral Region

    摘要: The modern synthetic routes in organic chemistry, as well as the recent advances in high-resolution spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, have awakened a renewable interest in the development of organic fluorophores. In this regard, boron-dipyrrin (BODIPY) dyes are ranked at the top position as luminophores to be applied in photonics or biophotonics. This chromophore outstands not only by its excellent and tunable photophysical signatures, but also by the chemical versatility of its core, which is readily available to a myriad of functionalization routes. In this chapter, we show that, after a rational design, bright and photostable BODIPYs can be achieved along the whole visible spectral region, being suitable as molecular probes or active media of lasers. Alternatively, the selective functionalization of the dipyrrin core, mainly at meso position, can induce new photophysical phenomena (such as charge transfer) paving the way to the development of fluorescent sensors, where the fluorescent response is sensitive to a specific environmental property.
