Monolithic metal dimer-on-film structure: new plasmonic properties introduced by the underlying metal
摘要: Dimers -two closely-spaced metallic nanostructures- are one of the primary nanoscale geometries in plasmonics, supporting high local field enhancements in their interparticle junction under excitation of their hybridized “bonding” plasmon. However, when a dimer is fabricated on a metallic substrate, its characteristics are changed profoundly. Here we examine the properties of an Au dimer on an Au substrate. This structure supports a bright “bonding” dimer plasmon, screened by the metal, and a lower energy magnetic charge transfer plasmon. Changing the dielectric environment of the dimer-on-film structure reveals a broad family of higher-order hybrid plasmons in the visible region of the spectrum. Both the localized surface plasmons resonances (LSPR) of the individual dimer-on-film structures as well as their collective surface lattice resonances (SLR) show a highly sensitive refractive index sensing response. Implementation of such all-metal magnetic-resonant nanostructures offers a promising route to achieve higher-performance LSPR- and SLR-based plasmonic sensors.

LSPR Biosensing Approach for the Detection of Microtubule Nucleation
摘要: Microtubules are dynamic protein ?laments that are involved in a number of cellular processes. Here, we report the development of a novel localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) biosensing approach for investigating one aspect of microtubule dynamics that is not well understood, namely, nucleation. Using a modi?ed Mie theory with radially variable refractive index, we construct a theoretical model to describe the optical response of gold nanoparticles when microtubules form around them. The model predicts that the extinction maximum wavelength is sensitive to a change in the local refractive index induced by microtubule nucleation within a few tens of nanometers from the nanoparticle surface, but insensitive to a change in the refractive index outside this region caused by microtubule elongation. As a proof of concept to demonstrate that LSPR can be used for detecting microtubule nucleation experimentally, we induce spontaneous microtubule formation around gold nanoparticles by immobilizing tubulin subunits on the nanoparticles. We ?nd that, consistent with the theoretical model, there is a redshift in the extinction maximum wavelength upon the formation of short microtubules around the nanoparticles, but no signi?cant change in maximum wavelength when the microtubules are elongated. We also perform kinetic experiments and demonstrate that the maximum wavelength is sensitive to the microtubule nuclei assembly even when microtubules are too small to be detected from an optical density measurement.

Deep-ultraviolet plasmon resonances in Al-Al 2 O 3 @C core-shell nanoparticles prepared via laser ablation in liquid
摘要: We developed a convenient, facile, low cost and ‘‘green” method to synthesize nanoparticles(NPs) with deep-ultraviolet localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) based on laser ablation of aluminum target in liquid. The nanoparticles had an Al-Al2O3@C core-shell structure, and the LSPR peak ranged from 240nm to 250nm with the increasing of laser radiation time. It is found that the LSPR peak of the NPs is related to the presence of Al2O3 based on experimental characterization and theoretical simulation. The carbon shell can reduce the oxidation of Al nanoparticles and enhance the stability, which is significant important to achieve the deep-ultraviolet LSPR. Moreover, we demonstrated the enhancement of the blue fluorescence intensity from CsPbBr3-xClx by the Al-Al2O3@C NPs, due to the stronger excitations for CsPbBr3-xClx by the enhancement of localized electromagnetic field from LSPR.

Highly Sensitive and Selective Nanogap-Enhanced SERS Sensing Platform
摘要: This paper reports a highly sensitive and selective surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing platform. We used a simple fabrication method to generate plasmonic hotspots through a direct maskless plasma etching of a polymer surface and the surface tension-driven assembly of high aspect ratio Ag/polymer nanopillars. These collapsed plasmonic nanopillars produced an enhanced near-field interaction via coupled localized surface plasmon resonance. The high density of the small nanogaps yielded a high plasmonic detection performance, with an average SERS enhancement factor of 1.5 × 107. More importantly, we demonstrated that the encapsulation of plasmonic nanostructures within nanofiltration membranes allowed the selective filtration of small molecules based on the degree of membrane swelling in organic solvents and molecular size. Nanofiltration membrane-encapsulated SERS substrates do not require pretreatments. Therefore, they provide a simple and fast detection of toxic molecules using portable Raman spectroscopy.

Non-enzymatic sensing of dopamine by localized surface plasmon resonance using carbon dots-functionalized gold nanoparticles
摘要: A highly selective, sensitive, and rapid colorimetric sensor for the determination of dopamine (DA) was developed using the color change of S-doped carbon dots functionalized gold nanoparticles (S-CDs@Au NPs). The base of the method is the formation of a complex between the amine groups of dopamine with carboxylic groups of S-CDs@Au NPs followed by their aggregation with Fe3+ ions which acts as the linkers causing a red shift from 520 to 670 nm in the localized surface plasmon peak of S-CDs@Au NPs. The ratio of absorbance intensity at 670 nm to 520 nm was monitored as the analytical signal for determination of dopamine. The parameters affecting the analytical signal including reaction time, solution pH, the concentration of Au NPs and concentration of Fe3+ were optimized. At optimized conditions, the calibration curve was linear in the concentration range of 0.81-16.80 μM of dopamine. The detection and quantification limits were 0.23 μM and 0.77 μM, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviation (RSDs) at 5.0 μM of DA were 3.9% and 5.6%, respectively (n = 5). The applicability of the method for determination of DA in dopamine ampoule, urine and serum human samples was investigated.

Direct Imaging of Surface Plasmon-Driven Hot Electron Flux on the Au Nanoprism/TiO 2
摘要: Direct measurement of hot electron flux from a plasmonic Schottky nanodiode is important for obtaining fundamental insights explaining the mechanism for electronic excitation on a surface. Here, we report the measurement of photo-induced hot electrons on a triangular Au nanoprism on TiO2 under incident light with photoconductive atomic force microscopy (pc-AFM), which is direct proof of the intrinsic relation between hot electrons and localized surface plasmon resonance. We find that the local photocurrent measured on the boundary of the Au nanoprism is higher than that inside the Au nanoprism, indicating that field confinement at the boundary of the Au nanoprism acts as a hot spot, leading to the enhancement of hot electron flow at the boundary. Under incident illumination with a wavelength near the absorption peak (645 nm) of a single Au nanoprism, localized surface plasmon resonance resulted in the generation of a higher photo-induced hot electron flow for the Au nanoprism/TiO2, compared with that at a wavelength of 532 nm. We show that the application of a reverse bias results in a higher photocurrent for the Au nanoprism/TiO2, which is associated with a lowering of the Schottky barrier height caused by the image force. These nanoscale measurements of hot electron flux with pc-AFM indicate efficient photon energy transfer mediated by surface plasmons in hot electron-based energy conversion.

Electron transfer during binding processes between thiolate molecules and Au nano-islands
摘要: We investigated electron transfer during the time-dependent binding processes between thiolate molecules and Au nano-islands by observing tunneling current with an interdigitated microelectrode supporting the sputtered Au nano-islands (IME@AuNI). The time-dependent optical and electrical signal variation during the binding process was examined for five kinds of thiolates. As the immersion time was prolonged, the optical absorbance increased, whereas the current passing through the IME@AuNI decreased. Importantly, the spectral and current characteristics depended on the thiolate structure, because of the formation of capping layer in accordance with thiolate structure. These results are mainly attributed to synergistic effects of electron transfer from Au nano-islands to thiolate molecules and bridging effects of thiolate molecules among Au nano-islands.

Ag nanocrystals with nearly ideal optical quality: synthesis, growth mechanism, and characterizations
摘要: Though Ag nanocrystals are predicted as the best material for localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) in the visible light region, realization of their ideal LSPR properties is hindered by the stringent requirement, i.e., simultaneous control of their size, shape, crystallinity, and surface structure. To achieve this goal, a synthetic scheme in non-polar solvent coupled with mild oxidative-etching by H+ ions is established. With a trace amount of Cl- ions as catalysts, H+ ions (in the form of carboxylic acids) become active for selectively etching the nuclei (and small nanocrystals) with imperfect crystal structure, which results in a new growth mechanism for formation of monodisperse nanocrystals, namely “self-focusing of size/crystallinity distribution”. H+ ions, ligands, and other reagents in the scheme are confirmed to possess negligible effects on the surface dielectric properties of Ag nanocrystals. To eliminate radiative damping of LSPR, single-crystalline and monodisperse spherical Ag nanocrystals in the size range between 7 and 20 nm are synthesized using this one-pot scheme. With excellent control of all the structural parameters, the full-width-at-half-maximum of LSPR spectra of single-crystalline Ag nanocrystals match theoretical predictions in the entire size range, and the maximum quality factor (~20) of LSPR predicted by theory is realized. Raman enhancement factor of the single-crystalline Ag nanocrystals for crystal violet (excitation at 514 nm) is 5 times higher than that of the typical multi-twinned ones with the same size.

摘要: Manipulation of Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) by electron-bunch excitation of localized surface plasmon (LSP) of gold (Au) disc arrays on Au substrate is investigated by FDTD simulation. When the wavelength of LSP mode is within the SPR emission band, SPR is locked and enhanced at the LSP wavelength. The emission angle of LSP-locked SPR still follows the wavelength-angle relation of traditional SPR. Furthermore, both the emission wavelength and angle increase as the radius and height of Au disc increase.
